Interesting fact - When "Lay Down Sally" was released as a single in 1977, "Cocaine" was on the B-side of the 45. For more of ol' Slow Hand, you can do his cover of Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff", "Tears in Heaven", "Change the World", "Forever Man", or "Layla" (which was released under the group name Derek and the Dominoes, one of the many groups Eric was a part of).

Clapton has dived into so may styles from blues to psychedelic to classic rock to reggae. "Lay Down Sally" was when he got into a country phase in the late 70's early 80's. Then he then got back into a more commercial mainstream sound in the mid and later 80's , then his platinum selling acoustic phase in the early 90's, then he got back into blues in the later 90's and into the 2000's.

Per Songfacts: This jaunty tune is one of Clapton's biggest American hits. He wrote it in the style of one of his favorite songwriters, the Oklahoma musician J.J. Cale (Clapton said the song was "as close as an Englishman could get to being J.J. Cale). The B-side of the single was Clapton's cover of Cale's song "Cocaine." In this song, Clapton tries to convince a girl to hang out with him in bed instead of leaving. The song is not typical of Clapton's work, which is often based on the blues.

❤Props must go out here to the brilliant Marcy Levy, who not only sang the harmonies but was also the principal writer of this song. Which is why you simply must check out another song for which she did most of the writing, "The Core," from the same SLOWHAND album. @bsiems_willieaugustproject
@bsiems_willieaugustproject Год назад
@@scottmelligan1281 Clapton certainly did fine things with multiple J.J. Cale songs, but I don't believe Cale had any hand in "Lay Down Sally." The song is generally credited to Levy, Clapton, and guitarist George Terry. Similarly, "The Core" is credited to just Levy and Clapton, with Clapton supplying the foundational riffs and Levy fleshing out much of the melody and lyrics. Fun other fact: The other female vocalist on "Lay Down Sally" was none other than Yvonne Elliman, most famous for her stunning role as Mary Magdalene in the movie Jesus Christ Superstar (hint, hint).

This song was co-written by Marcy Levy who was living in Tulsa at the time and singing with the musicians backing Clapton on this album. She sings background harmonies on this one. She also does great harmonies with EC on the song "Promises". Clapton said he heard the Tulsa musicians jamming every day after the album recording sessions. They played "the Tulsa sound" and inspired him to write "Lay Down Sally" in that mode. Yes Clapton is in the Rock HOF. In fact he is the only artist selected 3 times for that honor - The Yardbirds, Cream, and as a solo artist. Good choice guys.

Jay hit the nail on the head when it comes to Eric Clapton. His Nickname is Slowhand, and has an album of the same name. "Tears in Heaven", from later in his career, is an amazing and touching song you would enjoy. He plays on The Beatles "While My Guitar gently Weeps" which is on their White Album. Best friends with George Harrison, and he married Georges Ex Wife, and they remained best friends

I have been asking for months that you listen to his song Let It Rain. It shows the great guitar work & is early in his career, when he wasn't quite so laid back. Maybe sometime it will happen. He co wrote Lay Down Sally with a lady named Marcy Levy, she is singing backup. I saw them together in the late 70's. She had a turn as lead vocalist on one song & she hit this note that shook the walls of the place. It was so strong & powerful that Clapton's jaw dropped open & he doubled over in laughter. This song was a #3 hit in 1978.

This is mature Eric Clapton. Probably early 40s. I think this was shortly after he gave up drugs and alcohol. I think he’s in the Rock Hall 3 times with The Blues Breakers, Cream and as a solo artist. He is one of only 2 people who ever played on a Beatles album. Back in the 90s Guitar World’s cover feature article was “100 reasons why it’s good to be Eric Clapton”. #63 Best friends with George Harrison. #64 Married George Harrison’s wife. #65 STILL best friends with George Harrison. Can you imagine that? Wow!

His nick name is "Slow Hand". This song along with many of the others that are being suggested are mostly from his solo work, however you don't know Eric until you listen to Cream. Proceeding his solo career Eric, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce were the band Cream, the first Super Group. Sunshine of Your Love, Badge, White Room, Spoonful, Born Under a Bad Sign, Crossroads, these are the songs that made Clapton famous. He is a triple inductee into the RR Hall of Fame as Cream, and as a solo artist, and a member of the Yard Birds. Before the band Cream was John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Yard Birds, then Cream, then Blind Faith (with Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker), then Derek and the Dominoes (Layla, his love song to his future wife Pattie Boyd who at the time was married to his best friend George Harrison). After all of that is when he began his "solo" career. Until you've experienced Clapton from each of these era's you don't know Clapton at all.

It should be noted that the solo was played with no chord changes, the rhythm guitar simply vamping on the root chord throughout the solo. This is a great example how Eric finely crafts his note phrases implementing a few nice simple tricks and utilizing the entire guitar neck. Very tasty and one of my favorites.

I believe your question about the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame was answered below. He is the only person inducted 3 times, once for Cream, once for The Yardbirds and then for his solo career. As for the Yardbirds, the three greatest guitarists ever all played in the Yardbirds, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck. Although they weren't members all at the same time. He was also a member of Blind Faith with Steve Winwood, another great band. A true legend. As always, great reaction y'all!

Great reaction! Clapton is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame three times, once as a member of The Yardbirds, once as a member of Cream, and once for his solo career. He’s no angel! He’s been through alcoholism, drug abuse, and in a concert in England in 1975 he made some really racist comments and in 1991 his 4 year old son fell out of the window of his penthouse in New York which is where he got the song Tears In Heaven and was also used for a movie called Rush. Eric has a lot of talent but there’s a lot of ugliness and bad things that happen around him.
