Very interesting documentary and portrait of a great sportsman. It obviously covers his great sporting achievements, but also shows us his personal side. However, I wonder whether an hour long documentary should perhaps dedicate more than 60sec to the aspect of doping. And even then we get merely a reference to the “dark ages of cycling” and that he had “difficult times with the media” and “didn’t always play 100% by the rules.” The word ‘doping’ is never used. He previously admitted to doping and was found guilty and given a 10-month suspended sentence. Admittedly, as he eluded to elsewhere, probably the majority of riders in those days were doping. So, some might argue that in some respect this doesn’t take away from his sporting achievements. And while this may be true, nevertheless, the fallout from all of this must have undoubtedly played a very significant part in his life that can’t have just washed over him. So, it seems odd that it doesn’t feature more significantly in what is meant to be a personal portrayal. Not sure if this was a conscious decision or whether GCN were just too afraid to ask. I think GCN could have done a better job here.
