Here it is 50 years later, and all his records still stand. He was not only the most beautiful horse and the greatest horse, but an unbelievably phenomenal asset to our history. That we could appreciate such a magnificent animal so much that after all these years, we still love him.

As amazing as his Belmont was, to me the move he made at the first turn in the Preakness is the most amazing thing I have seen in fifty years of following sports. He passed those horses like they were standing still. Unbelievable.
That move was a duplicate of his move in the Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga in his juvenile year. He went 5 wide around the turn doing a 22-1/5 seconds going from the back to the front and kept going. Phenomenal
And those weren't $3,200 claimers he was passing in the Preakness, either. They were Grade I stakes-winners, and he just sailed right on by them and still had enough in the tank to win.
Secretariat most Beautiful Horse created, his Dad Bold Ruler for speed & Mom Something Royal for stamina and Heart size, their names have a Supernatural meaning...no wonder Secretariat was Special & set apart. Wow incredible to watch over & over ( : Amen
When Big Red set the gold standard in racing, for once the entire world stood in awe! I never tire of watching Secratariat run! Oh, how he loved to run!
Never will a horse surpass his record. As much as I’ve loved other horses this horse brings me through the most horrible times of my life! Gives me the perseverance to go on.....all that were his crew have given me my life! I watched this horse with my late Father. This horse lives in my❤️😘
I AGREE ,SECRETARIAT IS AN INSPIRATION, AND I USUALLY WATCH HIS GREAT TRIPLE CROWN RACES AT LEAST 2 OR MORE TIMES A WEEK...I NEVER GET TIRED OF WATCHING THIS AMAZING RACE 🏇...AND HOW HIS LEGEND STILL BLOWS PEOPLE AWAY...ESPECIALLY NEW RACE HORSE FANS....LOOK UP AS MANY VIDEOS ON SECRETARIAT'S LIFE& STORY...THE PEOPLE HOW RAISED HIM..& TRAINED HIM...&,PEOLPE WHO REPORTED ON HIS RACES ETC...HE WAS SIMPLY THE BEST RACE HORSE 🏇 THIS WORLD'S EVER SEEN, GOD BLESS YOU ALL ,LOVE TO ALL RACE HORSE FANS, SHIRL IN S.C.
I was 12 when secretariat blasted into the media scene, I was an athlete and loved sports but I never thought of horse racing, my area it wasn't a thing but secretariat changed that, especially Belmont stakes, the announcer calling the race says, "He's moving like a tremendous machine", even today thinking of that gives me chills, I'd never seen a horse run away from the field by that huge margin. Thanks for a great memory.
He holds the race records for the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes some 42 years after racing them. That will never happen again in a million years. What is there to overrate?
In 1973 we needed a hero and Big Red was our American hero. I liked how he walked with a swagger. The little man on his back never seemed to use the riding crop.
He’s probably having match races with Spectacular Bid in Heaven, like he did when they were in adjoining paddocks. Secretariat ignored the other 2 horses in his area. Ron Turcotte did say that Spectacular Bid was the second best horse he ever saw. Game recognizes game. Plus, they were uncle/nephew through Bold Ruler.
So glad for the internet. I get to re live watching this Beautiful Horse . I was 6. I remember every race. We were all around the TV. Cheering. He truly was a celebrity. Well deserved. Still holds th wss records, I believe. It's been so long. Surely there would have been another Big red. NOPE NOT YET. 2019. They said his Heart was 5 times the size of other Horses. Explains why he could run so fast for so long. ONE OF A KIND
Actually, his heart was 2 times the size of other horses. A necropsy report after his death in 1989 stated his heart weighed between 21 and 22 pounds. The average thoroughbred horse's heart weighs between 8 and 9 pounds. Also, Secretariat's hindquarters were the main source of his power, with a sloped croup that extended the length of his femur. When in full stride, his hind legs were able to reach far under himself, increasing his drive. His ample girth, long back and well-made neck all contributed to his heart-lung efficiency.
I'm in my 70's now, and I've seen 3 of the most incredible sporting accomplishments ever; Secretariat at the Belmont was the first. The Miracle on Ice in the 1980 Winter Olympics was second. And Jack Nicklaus winning the Masters at age 46 with a 30 on the back nine was the third. Secretariat's was the most incredible of all; it's been nearly 50 years and he still holds the record time for all 3 races. I don't think anyone's come within 2 seconds of his Belmont time. And 2 seconds is 10 lengths.
Mike Rodriguez I don't know where you got that idea! Secretariat was constantly called Big Red! He was called Big Red so often that I saw his owner in a video say "No, his name is Secretariat!"
Mike Rodriguez My, my! What's the matter? You don't like being proved wrong! Your original post was about Secretariat being called "Big Red" not about which horse was better which I didn't even address a-hole! Personally, I'm not interested in what you think either! Get over yourself!
Mike Rodriguez Says who? You? Who the heck are you? I could care less what you think about Man O War or Secretariat! And besides Secretariat I also like the Count better than Man O War! Gee, I must have been dropped twice!
Mike Rodriguez I didn't ask you to post to me! And I also had 2 kids so guess I wasn't sterile! You are such a jerk! Do you have an unhappy life that enables you to post mean things?
Mike Rodriguez The only reason that I mentioned my kids is because you said I was sterile! Sorry to burst your bubble but Secretariat was called "Big Red" all the time! Are you 2 yrs. old? Because you sure do act like it!
Yes, and Sham busted 2 teeth out in the gate all the while nearly winning. It was always going to be a match race between those 2, and all 3 races were.
Puedo ver este video todos los dias y emcionarme como el primer dia, me encanta ver a este hermoso y magnifico athleta q es secretariat, no hay ni habra otro igual q mi amado secretariat
Secretariat is obviously the King, it must be something about Red horses. In Australia we had Phar Lap, who was also called Big Red. He won the 1930 Melbourne Cup and was shot at to prevent him running. He went to Mexico to run and was poisoned to death. Long live these great horses in our hearts. A link to Phar lap if you love racehorses ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mKQnoRamZBQ.html
Wow, how absurd. Hope they caught who did that and castrated them. Man O War was obviously also known as Big Red, Chestnuts just have that it factor I suppose.
@@Psyfi85 I can see the link doesn't work, but there is an Australian movie about him called "Phar Lap". it is historically accurate and I must admit I had tears rolling down my face. Australia brought his body home and he was preserved and is shown in a museum. A bit morbid I suppose.
First, just to keep us all on the same page, the announcer at the end misspoke when he said Secretariat would retire to Claiborne (which was true) where he was born (definitely NOT true - he was born at the Meadows). Secondly, I think he had another gear most horses lack. Listening to those that rode him, they talk all about how while running in a race, he would suddenly just stretch out more, seeming to drop the jockey down about 6", and then he took off. You can see it dramatically in the Preakness when he made the run from last to the front while on the turns. Thirdly, has anyone ever figured out (if it is even possible) what his time might have been in any race if he not had to go to the outside on the turns so often? I mean, really? That adds a lot of distance!
Correct, surprised they got his birthplace wrong. Sham was foaled at Claiborne, maybe they mixed up the two. And yes, he seemingly had another gear whenever Ronnie, Eddie needed it, like to think he knew how much power and stamina he had but held back partially due to rider error/instruction. As far as his constantly going outside there’s no telling what would’ve happened in Preakness for example had he switched post position with Sham, would’ve been interesting to say the least.
There's a record that may never be broken!....When people were actually crying at the finish and even several hard core experts were saying things about God being involved ,,,there really was a feeling a supernatural intervention took place that day at Beomont.!..
Yes, horse-racing pros who witnessed Secretariat’s Belmont run felt speechless at first, “because it was such an overwhelming thing.” Awed, astonished, and some spoke of the Supernatural.
I was at the Preakness that day. What a horse. Anyone notice that in all 3 races Turcott never used the whip. It was all heart for a horse who just loved to run
Thank you.i rode big red in 1972 when he was 2.it was at bay meadows in a 2 furlong training race.from their it was on to Hollywood Park for a maiden special wt.against his half brother run dusty run.and alot of people thought RDR was better.red was intimidated by RDR.SO IN WARM UP I GOT HE AWAY FROM THE OTHERS TO RELAX BECAUSE HE WOULD WASH OUT.GOT HIS MIND ON WORKING FROM A STAND STILL BREAKING AND PULL HIM UP.AFTER A NICE CANTOR FROM POST PARADE.WAS IN THE 3HOLE AND 13 OTHER STARTERS GOING 5AND ONE HALF FURLONGS.WE WON BY 6 LENGTHS.THEN WORKED HIM THREE MORE FURLONGS.TOTAL ONE MILE AND ONE SIXTEENTH.IN I MINUTE 42 SECONDS AND 2/5.SET HIM UP FOR HOLLYWOOD PARK JUVENILE AT 7 FURLONGS A GRADE ED STAKES RACE.JUST DROPPED MY HANDS A LITTLE AND HE PICKED UP THE BIT LIKE A CHAMP.CHANGED LEADS.TO HIS RIGHT THEN BACK TO HIS INSIDE LEFT LEAD COMING OUT OF THE FIRST TURN.AND FINISHED SITTING CHILLY. J.P.
Meadow Stables didn't win the coin toss. They got Secretariat because of it, since the other party thought the other foal in question had better breeding
The winner of the toss got the first pick of foals born in '69, the loser the first pick of the '70 foals. But there was no choice to be made re the '70 foals, as one of the mares involved didn't conceive in '69. Ms. Chenery, as the "loser," automatically got the only foal produced, Secretariat. If she'd have won, she would only have gotten one '69 foal, and Ogden Phipps would have gotten the one '70 foal, Secretariat, by default. The coin toss took place in the fall of '69; it was known at that time that one of the mares hadn't conceived that year, so both parties wanted to lose, as it meant getting two foals vs one.
Please not, Secretariat was NOT born at Claiborne Stud. He was born in the foaling shed on the grounds of The Meadow. That shed is now a Virginia historic site. Ronnie Turcote did use the whip a couple of times in the Derby. Seattle Slew raced against horses of less calibre than Secretariat did. Sham was an excellent horse and was Anglelite. Secretariat was just better. His progeny who have come to the track have been the same. Lady's Secret won the Derby and the Belmont. Terlingua had an excellent racing career.
He was NOT BORN in KENTUCKY!!! Secretariat was born to a modest horse farm in VIRGINIA. He was “syndicated” and MOVED to stand at stud at Claiborne in Kentucky.
You just have to give it up to Secretariat and Ronnie Tourcotte! He knew his horse. At the Belmont, they were cropping the hell out of Sham, but Ronnie just let him run! I truly believe that Secretariat was a thinking horse. He won his way. I get chills and cry when I watch him run the Belmont. He was just exquisite! I believe that Penney Tweedy really opened the door for woman in racing. She was smart, collected and gracious. Lucian Lauren knew his stuff. As humans, there were foibles, but the end result speaks for itself! RIP Secretariat, you will never be forgotten! I don't think that I will see another horse like him in my lifetime, but genetics do make their rounds. It may be in 100 years, it could be tomorrow. I have to believe that he will come back even stronger!
I just recently learned that Secretariat and Sham were related to one another on the dam side, and he dam side is where the "big heart" came from. Both of their dams were daughters of Princequillo. Sham's heart weight 18lbs and Secretariat's heart was estimated to weigh 22lbs.
Small query...The commentator said that "SECRETARIAT" retired to stud at his birthplace "Claiborn Farms", but I have always understood that "Big Red" was born at the Chenery stud, "Meadow Farms"...? Which is correct , please....? Either way he is Legendary....Immortal...He was and always will be "SECRETARIAT" That is simply enough...!!
Mike Rodriguez Well, if your goal was to get a rise out of somebody with that comment, you got it. That's the most ridiculous thing ever. Barring injury or illness, he would have cleaned house. The only times he ever lost, he was sick and was run anyway.
Mike Rodriguez Your 'honesty' is an arrogantl pursuit to display your 'perfect' knowledge in public. In the case of Secretariat, his 'perfection' as seen by admirers is relative to what is seen and/or expected of racehorses in general. It's not just his races. It's also his conformation, constitution, attitude, and desire to run.
Been watching horse racing since 1970 an out of his 16 wins i would say about 6 times he raced no horse on there best day could have beaten him . The great horses have one maybe two days were they look incredible but this horse had too many days were he ran insane. The greatess horses usally burn out after a mile an a half this horse ran faster in the last quarter mile in his 2 mile an a half races, the belmont n the man of war stakes thats not suppose too happens ,he would beat theses horses today in a mile n half race by 30 yards.
Sporysofkingstv.....hey you have some awesome videos of secretariats triple crown races!!! Where’d u find them and where r them from??? Is it the original CBC broadcast or a documentary special?
whats a shame is sham wouldve been a triple crown winner any other year. He also broke the derby record and was 2/5 a second from the preakness record. Secreteriat broke his heart he didnt race again. Lost the will to run. Sham also had 3 teeth knocked out coming out of statrting gate in derby, who knows id he didnt
Secretariat did not lose his will to race. He raced again and won. Being a lover of his you mentioned sham knocked out 3 teeth and all my investigations no one other than you has said that. Sham lost you must have lost yourself still got the tote?
