Adam West introduced countless people to Batman through the 1966 tv show and movie. He played a silly, campy Batman that stands out as the Bright Knight rather than a Dark Knight, and it not only saved Batman in the comics but influenced every successive Batman movie and show to date. Today, we explain the origin, history, and legacy of Adam West's 1960s Batman television series from the vibrant colors, goofy villains, and comedic genius of the Camp Crusader.

*Couple of things:* 1) I know this video is late. We wanted to wait and take our time. There's a very good chance that there are still some errors because it's a long, complex video, so thanks for bearing with me! 2) We've disabled ads on the video thanks to our Patrons who can allow us to still get compensated for our efforts without putting commercials over this tribute video. 3) I am very tired, so I'm gonna get some sleep now, but please leave lots of comments for me to see when I wake up! What was your favorite Adam West Batman moment? 4) Good night, old chum.

I can see a parallel with anime and comic books. Because, in a sense, what they offer a variety of genre and maturity to their story, while allowing a greater suspension of disbelief than that of live-action. That's why comic book and anime fans can get outraged at how their favorites can be treated as immature by non-anime or comic book fans the moment they see a live-action film or series. In a sense, the ones who adapt are also at fault for not being able to understand that this "suspension of disbelief", sometimes, cannot be translated into live-action. The main reason why comics live-action are more acceptable today is because of decades of fans getting used to these tropes (spandex, outside underwear, tights, etc.)

It was a cultural phenomenon. Many people loved it. The people who talk down on it are cringelords. There is room for dark Batman and campy Batman, but to me the very concept is so inherently ridiculous it requires some self awareness, which comics are better at. I recently watched the new Batman movie and was laughing hysterically at some of the scenes that are meant to be taken seriously
@tylerjames805
@tylerjames805 2 года назад
@@TrueGamer22887 I don’t think the new Batman was meant to be 100% serious. It was serious when it needed to be and made jokes when it was needed. If anything I’d say the Nolan movies are funnier because they try to have this “grounded” and “realistic” tone and plot line and then you have Batman who sounds like a death metal vocalist.
@TrueGamer22887
@TrueGamer22887 2 года назад
@@tylerjames805 wasn’t saying it was 100% serious with no levity, I’m saying I was laughing at scenes that weren’t supposed to be laughed at. I laughed hardest when he was in the police station on the table and began violently flailing around, stopped for a second and then flailed around again. A few mins later he punches Gordon and that for sure was supposed to be a lighter scene, but that’s not the one I cried laughing at

This video genuinely made me tear up a little. Adam was the Batman I grew up on. I started out watching the Justice League TV Show when my mom saw that and told me about the Batman she loved as a child. We found the Batman movie on TV one day and I instantly fell in love. Adam was the personification of a hero to me. I loved Kevin Conroy but here was a man who taught me right from wrong. Who showed me it was cool to follow the rules. When my mom would laugh I didn't understand because he was doing and saying things that resonated to me as a child. I love you Adam and will always miss you.

The interesting thing about this show for me was that as a kid in the 1970s I took the show so seriously. It would come on weekdays after school, and we'll all rush home to watch it. Years later, as an adult, having not watched the show in some time, I sort of rediscovered it. All the 'in jokes' I didn't get as a kid, and the silliness of it. Then, my kids discovered it, and I saw how serious they too it, and that made me laugh. I think that's why it's managed to keep its charm for decades.
@chrissteele1362
@chrissteele1362 4 года назад
Your right, kids love the serious side and adults loved the sexy tones of the show. The fights, traps, costumes, actors were all great! As a kid, all would try to figure out how Batman would escape the vicious traps and watch the next night to see how he got out of the tight situation same bat time same bat channel!
@TrueGamer22887

My dad said the exact same thing. He said him and his friends would rush to school to discuss how Batman and robin would get out of their latest capture. I think watching this show with him made me turned off by the modern marvel movies, I wish they would lean harder into the camp, since history shows kids will take it just as seriously as the weird middle ground they find themselves in now

I never watched the show but the other day I noticed the movie was on Netflix so I gave it a shot. Man, it was funny as hell. Campy, cheesy, ridiculous. An enjoyable retrospective on the iconic Adam West Batman. I especially like the three B's: 'Bond...Beatles...and Batman.' I was ten years old when I saw the first episode in 1966 and was totally mesmerized. I hadn't been exposed to pure refined superhero comics yet...so watching Adam and Burt in the Batcave, tearing out in the fiery Batmobile, totally blew me away. The over-the-top villains were fascinating to watch. Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman. The highlight of the series was watching the Batman-Green Hornet crossover. It's hard to express how much the success of the 60's Batman show permeated everything back then. It wasn't the world you knew before. The world was Gotham City...and Batman and Robin kept it safe from madness. I eventually got into DC comics and Marvel comics around 1969...leaving Archie and Disney and Classics Illustrated behind...so I understand their bereavement over the Dark Knight and their ire towards the Bright Knight of Adam West. But Batman wasn't stolen by television...he was borrowed by the broken down world of post-JFK Camelot. Hollywood did it's job and came through with a bright, campy, God love us all, American made escapist epic that finally lifted our spirits. Adam West's Batman shines brighter now with each succeeding generation that dons the cape and dances the Batusi and cries "Holy Legit Legacy!".

You made me teared up loved this video . Many would assume that my first batman was Christian Bale, because I'm 20 years old and he was the modern Batman (before Affleck); it was actually Adam West where i was introduced to Batman in TV/Movie format. I loved that version of Batman because, in an odd way for me, it shows that batman has humanity in him, even though it's not canon to any comic or films. And like you said thanks to Adam West we wouldn't survive the era (that's how I interpret it.) you could almost say that Adam West's Batman help the super hero movie genre into what it is today. I may be stretching it a bit but that's how much influence that man had. RIP Adam West.

I dear staple in my childhood. I would jet straight to my television set after school, tune to channel 58 to catch the last bit of looney tunes, then at 4:30 sharp - Batman. I just took it all at face value. Loved it. this was circa 1989.

Great tribute. This will always be my first Batman. The Bright Knight will shine forever. He was also great in the other work he did. His Mayor West on Family Guy stole every episode he was in. I think that there were 3 things that breathed new life into the Bright Knight version of the Bat. 1) Various cartoon iterations, especially the Scooby Doo movies and the classic Superfriends. 2) The aforementioned Family Guy stuff And 3) The Batman 66 comic books, written by Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman. You should also check out Ralph Garman's video about Adam West.

You did do this right. I had the privilege to meet Adam around the time that the dark night was on the big screen at hall in Fairfield Connecticut, I believe it was in 1992. He was the most humble and well spoken celebrity I have ever met. He was so down to earth and said, well, the most interesting thing I’ve done lately was play a part on the Simpsons. He made a zany face and said, I hope that goes well. He was my hero as a kid and he still is today. Thanks for a fantastic tribute to Adam West.

Thanks for this wonderful tribute to Adam West and the Batman TV series. In 1976, I first saw Batman weekday afternoons on local TV (WPIX-TV, CH 11, NYC) right before The Adventures of Superman (George Reeves). My first exposure to Batman was a live action, hour-packed show featuring the "Worlds Finest" DC comic book Team show in color!! I always saw the show as an action/adventure and not campy as a child. I have seen most of the animated versions of Batman that featured Adam West voicing the character so it is difficult for me to see anyone else as the Caped Crusader. Thanks again for this.

As an ardent admirer of the Silver age of comics I consider Adam West's Batman to be exactly that a Silver age comic made real it was funny and hilarious and honestly it showed Batman as well a far more well rounded and mature character than the version we have today.

I loved the two animated direct to dvd movies that were sent in the TV shows "canon", but they took a more serious and dark tone while retaining the charm and camp nature of the show. It was great that Adam West, Burt Ward and Julie Newmar reprised their roles as well.

My son who is 14 got the opportunity to meet Adam West at a convention just 6 months before his passing in Boston Massachusetts my son loves Adam West and knows everything that he is done as well is a proficiant Batman fan he brought in a comic book to have him sign that Adam West did not know had been made representing The Dark Knight and actually asked his handler to write down the name of the book so that he could acquire one himself my son What's so proud to know that he had introduced something to his favorite superhero and Actor Adam West such a nice humble man Mr. West was it was an honor meeting him and rather an expensive day that day to meet and greet and get pictures and autographs but as I look back on it those lifetime memories will always be there. Long live Adam West

BEAUTIFUL. 🦇 I was born in 1967...meaning, i grew up on "that Batman". Of course, in the 70's...there was only a handful of T.V. stations that worked, and Sunday mid-mornings was for BATMAN. Dad would be ironing some damn thing. Ma's doing laundry or reading. And me....smack dab in the middle of the living room floor, three feet away from the T.V. (na-na na-na na-na na-na) 🦇
