The melody wasn't really sad; I think "sentimental" would fit this song better.

This rendition sounds like the ending to a Legend of Zelda game where Link canonically dies.

It feels like desperately holding on to that last bit of hope in a dying world.

It’s fascinating that, due to all of the modal mixture already in the song, it sounds very natural in the minor key. It makes sense since half the song’s chords are already from the minor key.

This song lays everything out. Link has failed to save princess Zelda. Link was brutally murdered by gannondorf in front of Zelda’s eyes. Hyrule has been destroyed, and every hyrulian has been burnt to a crisp by Gannon. The whole land is suffering by Gannon’s rein. Slowly bit by bit everything and everyone is killed. Gannon has succeeded.

It may be in minor, but it doesn’t sound too sad tbh. It would work perfectly for a characters theme or lullaby. I can see they’ve used motifs from this theme and implemented it into a lot of the main themes in breath of the wild. Great job!!

The perfect song for the "Defeated Hero" timeline.

They called for the hero, he saved them before, he would arrive again. Day after day, they believed this, even as Ganon ravaged through the lands unopposed... the hero had to return... he couldn't be gone... they believed and believed, until they no longer could. Faithless in the hero who once was heralded as legend, they could only pray to the goddesses... yet Ganon was too strong, even for them. Ordering a select few to the highest peaks, the atmosphere was raised, Ganon's forces which had besieged the castle were frozen in time, and a seemingly never ending rain began. A barrier was raised around the castle as further protection from the Ganon's dark influence. The time may never come for a hero to arise, Hyrule has fallen... the Zora ordered by the divine to never explore the seas which surround them... it was a time of turmoil and devastation for all. As the king stared at the floodwaters rising below him, he sent out one final prayer, a wish for a light to be found, someday. For the legacy of the hero to not be forgotten, and for one day people to know courage like the hero so Hyrule might be reclaimed from the depths...
