I’ve been helping with Pathfinder since before Year 0 of PFS, and luckily I count a number of the staff as friends. I have to say I love your detailed commentaries, nice work here!

Thanks, Gamarishi! It's much easier to talk about Pathfinder lore when I can focus on just 2nd edition rather than trying to sift through all prior sourcebooks for 1st edition! :-) And yeah, that dragon turtle is definitely showing up in my home game at some point! -Theo

Looks like a nice set, especially, like you said, for a new group wanting to jump in with a set that includes a lot of basics. I have to say that, in the case of minis that were both in this set and in the Preview Pack, I much prefer the painting jobs on the figures from the Preview Pack. You guys are the best at making these minis reviews with all the background info, playing suggestions and tips, detailed content of every boosters/bricks, etc. Keep up the amazing work!

Some of these paint jobs are really really rough. The halfling slinger, really jumped out as being a rough color job.

I always like to point out that the smaller the mini, the more zoomed in it is on the video generally. So on the table, the paint job may look better than when we magnify it several times here. -Theo

Color variant models are the worst offenders. I think they use the palette swap excuse to sell models that are used for training. The variants also seem to have simpler color schemes which lends credence to them being for training. These models often have terrible paint lines and either have too much or not enough paint used.

A lot of cool looking minis for this set! A few that really stand out that I would love to get first would have to be the Aboleth, the Chimera (can’t believe it’s only Uncommon!) and especially the Dragon Turtle.

Thank you! I always like to mention that we get *really* close in on some very small minis, so it can really highlight some of the flaws. I recommend looking at the line-up at the beginning of the video and on the Dwarven Forge and table at the end of the video to see how they *really* look in-game. But hopefully you can get a sense of which ones are right for your game! -Theo

I watch these Gallant Goblin videos mainly because of the fantastic detail. I haven't had buyer's remorse since I subscribed. They help me decide whether to invest in case, brick or seek out individuals to fill in my table-top ranks. If I know I want more than half or all of the rares, I'll go for the case. If it's about a 3rd, I may go for a brick. But a dozen or fewer and I'm going with singles. Sometimes it's a matter of looking past the paint job (you can always repaint or touch-up bad ones). But this set is rougher than most. Generally speaking, the details are very soft, in a melted wax sort of way. It reminds me of the old Dragoneye and Harbinger D&D sets. Now that we've had some exceptional wizkids sets released the past couple of years, this is a hard pill to swallow. TBH, I don't know if there is a single mini in this set that I want now. A few of the ones I was looking forward to (from the digital render sneak peak) are available in the preview pack and appear to have slightly better paint jobs there. The others are just meh.
@TheGallantGoblin
@TheGallantGoblin 4 года назад
Hi Terry! I'm glad you're finding the videos useful! Our hope is that they help inform buying decisions, so I'm glad they're serving their purpose! It's interesting. I know I'm fairly easy to please, but I didn't notice any painting problems with this set until I started reviewing the footage for this video. And holding them in my hands, I don't really have any problems with them either. As I said in the comment above, our bright lighting and close perspective exaggerate minor painting flaws. Each person has their own threshold for an acceptable paint job of course. I did also notice when reviewing the footage that the preview set seemed to have an overall more detailed paint job for most of the figures. You may want to see if you can check out a few in person before fully deciding. Thanks! -Theo

I'll admit, I was really skeptical with the paint job. Even though you assured us that it was because of how zoomed in the video was, I still believed they had a bad paint job. Man was I wrong. Just picked up a couple of boosters from my FLGS today and they were pretty solid. I was surprised. I thought theyd be really bad, but they were still in line with the quality i expect from wizkids.

I see the dragon has some bendy wings... hot/cold water can help with that. As for the PC/NPC minis, I still find dwarf or halfling wizards strange, I prefer 2E rules where these races were only into clerical magic... but as you said, that halfling wizard looks a lot like the gnome Dungeon Master from the old toon. Might get him.
@TheGallantGoblin
@TheGallantGoblin 4 года назад
Yeah, I didn't actually notice that the dragon's wings might be misshapen until I watched the video. Definitely looks different than the render they posted. I'll go unbend him/her tonight. :-) Those were 2e or 1e rules? I generally prefer anything that opens up more options for role-playing, so the 2e rules for free ability boosts really excited me. Seems like you can mostly make any kind of character you want without facing too many game penalties. I wonder if that halfing wizard looking like the dungeon master was intentional... I'm guessing not. -Theo

@@TheGallantGoblin Ah 1E was even more limited! See, Dwarf or Elf, that was not a race, but also a CLASS! Elves were basically what we call rangers now, with spellcasting and archery focus and Dwarves were fighters with bonuses. :) 2E changed it with the ability score bonuses that made some races excel at things and suck at others, to the point that the class limitations made sense. And it made sense due to how the race is generally like! For example Dwarves +1 Constitution (they are sturdy) -1 Charisma (they are anything but tactful), plus got save bonuses against magic and poison. Rangers for example, could only be Humans or Half-Elves and Elves (again, made sense, these were the races living in forests dealing with animals). Multi-class was also restricted. Certain classes were alignment-restricted, like Rangers could not be Lawful, Bards had to be at least some form of Neutral, etc. But yeah the Dungeon Master in the old toon was a Gnome Wizard (or rather, an Archmage, given his powers). Also since we learned Venger was his son... the probably explanation is Venger is a Cambion, with his mother being a Succubus who likely seduced DM at one point.

How is there such a difference between the stat blocks and the minis? One would think that the minis for an rpg would be modelled after what the stat block say about them.
@TheGallantGoblin
@TheGallantGoblin 4 года назад
WizKids uses whatever concept art Paizo or Wizards of the Coast gives them, and as you know, things change in development from concept art. In this case, things were really changing because 2nd edition was actively being worked on, but other sets have the same issue. Even if you look in the source books, the art shown for a creature doesn't always match the stats in terms of weapons and armor. Size is a different issue altogether and any deviations there is usually due to technical production limitations. -Grady

I actually prefer the goblins from pathfinder and plan to buy the set of 3 unpainted one and the legendary adventures preview pack to have a good range of them as I hate having more than 1 of a scuplt, making all the minis the same just is bland and boring even with a different paint job.

Some of the paint choices are odd in the set. The first common male orc seems to have a giant green butt-flap because I think what was supposed to be part of his loincloth also got painted green. And the female orc has weird beige+silver paint that meshes together too much - the Preview Pack had better paint. Sadly the dwarf champion is also a great sculpt but not well painted, I see even part of the axe is painted bronze? And huh, did not know they renamed paladins to champions. Odd 'cause that's one of the class names D&D has not trademarked. The bugbear mauler is oddly scrawny. The other bugbear is more muscular. Odd, only noticed now the Chimera has no goat legs in the rear. The whole body is full lion, in fact. I think I preferred the previous types where they added goat and dragon parts in the body too. But still it is a nice sculpt and the first Uncommon Chimera. I see spears and swords are really bendy in this set, especially on the Cloud Giants. Were they made from softer plastic than Icons?
@TheGallantGoblin
@TheGallantGoblin 4 года назад
Yeah, when we put these minis side-by-side with the preview pack minis the paint quality difference was pretty apparent on many of them. Again, when they're actually on the table in play, the minor imperfections in the paint aren't really apparent to me, but there are some improvements that can be made. Yeah, I thought the Paladin -> Champion change was pretty inspired actually. Opens up some very interesting ideas for having Champions of evil deities that wouldn't have to be "fallen" paladins. Though I don't really allow evil player characters in my game. Yeah, I noticed that about the chimera too. Not sure why they went in that direction, but yeah, it's a nice figure. I wish I had had it a few months ago when my players encountered one. I'll go home and compare those spears. The cloud giant was the primary offender there I think. I didn't really notice a big problem in the rest of the set. I was just happy that nothing arrived broken since I'm running out of super glue. At least those bendy pieces are easy to fix. I'll let you know about the plastic. Thanks, Commander! -Theo

@TheGallantGoblin
@TheGallantGoblin 4 года назад
I can only speak for myself, but I think it's great for a D&D table. I do not mind having slightly different design choices for my goblins, bugbears, etc, as long as the minis are identifiable. And I always welcome more of those common monsters. The only minis in this set that would be tricky to incorporate into your D&D game may be the giants due to the size difference, but if you don't plan to mix and match them, no one will know the difference. The player character minis are great too. Thanks! -Theo

We are buying through the Paizo subscription available on their web store which almost always arrives before street date. Last time Lastwall arrived Monday before release date (that would be today for Legendary Adventures). We may have gotten it sooner this time because of the shipping price issue-the subscription bases its shipping on a standard case but the huge size minis this time plus the goblin village were both heavier than normal, resulting in an increase in shipping cost. As a result Paizo put a bunch of subscriptions on hold pending individual confirmation that each subscriber wanted to pay the extra price. We confirmed almost immediately so likely got ours shipped sooner than normal because they waited to ship others. That said unless you pay for expedited shipping the standard shipping doesn’t include tracking so you’ll only know when they ship it but not the estimated date when the package will arrive. Ours got to us Friday but it was a total surprise to get it that early. -Grady

The Gallant Goblin I finally got my case, and I was wondering. When you get broken minis what do you do? Cry about it then glue them together and move on? Or do you contact wizkids and say wtf? One of my boxes had a halfling slinger on top of the large mini (instead of behind it) as if someone was packing it and forgot to add a 3rd mini and just stuffed it in there real quick while the supervisor wasn’t looking, and it was completely squished back. Like he’s doing a hardcore limbo move. And one of my Orc Chargers had a broken quiver
@TheGallantGoblin

wizkids.com/product-support/ scroll down a bit and there are instructions on requesting replacement products. You usually have to send in the broken mini. We've only ever had to do it once when Volo from Dragon Heist arrived with no head at all. We haven't had any that were smashed like yours. It's not uncommon to have a piece broken off cleanly with all the parts in the box, though, and for those we usually glue it back together with super glue--I think we use Loctite gel. -Grady
