I am 75, I remember when it came out, the very minimum of body wrapped around a large engine. I saw one racing at Marlboro raceway in Maryland. That was an exciting time, the new Cobras mixing it up with Corvettes, the Cobras getting airborne coming off the short oval onto the very tight road course. Young people today might see electric cars whooshing around race courses from a distance, sounding like vacuum cleaners from a distance, no fire spitting from exhausts, no smell of castor oil, maybe a little ozone and hot wire insulation is all they will get. A real treat will be a vehicle fire, lithium batteries cooking off.

I bet the guy explaining the restoration of that beautiful siler '67 vette is a lot of fun at parties. I would not say anything, but he was rude to Dennis when he was being complimentary of his work. People who think they need to hide and keep secrets about certain restoration techniques are missing a great opportunity to help people in the car community, and instead being pretentious jerks. Luckily I have found that they are rare in the car hobby, and 9 out of 10 people are glad to tell/show/help you do something that they do really well. Im not talking about someone doing something they do for a living for free, thats a whole different scenario. If you drove that '67 vette 10 miles it would take him 3 years to go over the entire underside with a q tip. lol. Id love to see his face if the guy that owns it got in and immediately started doing donuts in it. Haha!

48:32 - the roller lifters were actually shared or of a similar design with the outgoing LT1 and other Chevy small blocks back to the late 70's.
@trillrifaxegrindor4411
@trillrifaxegrindor4411 3 года назад
no,they werent a shared or similar design to anything of the late 70's friend..and "sams corvette" being an older big block must have a specially retrofitted roller cam to have roller lifters. these have an integrated dog bone attaching the lifters to each other as a guide.... (this method pf retrofitting a roller cam into a non roller cam block is used in older style sbc/bbs's) ....later roller cam equipped small blocks use a spider hold down configuration and a drilled oil galley to hold the roller lifters. ...roller lifters were not used in sbc /oem until roller cams were introduced....you cant use a roller lifter on a flat tappet cam,can you? roller lifters came in around 1984-1985 with the tuned port 5.7 in the corvette,then the z28/iroc camaro and firebird trans am/gta shortly thereafter...
@TBird100636
@TBird100636 3 года назад
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 I was not referencing "Sam's Corvette" or Big Block Chevy for that matter. The roller lifter I'm talking about was first used in the Olds Diesel 350, some of those diesels were equipped with a flat tappet camshaft, some had a roller lifter camshaft. Then later used in other applications, including the 5.0L 305 V8, then eventually the 5.7L 350 V8, then the LS Engines. Look it up on Crane or Comp Cams website. Also used on 6.9L and 7.3L International Diesels (Including Powerstroke), 6.0L and 6.4L International Diesels (Powerstrokes too). Here is a video about it from a guy that has a business rebuilding Powerstrokes (and is actually a hard core GM guy with 2 GM LS Powered toys so he probably knows allot more then you and I do). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-32YKBwDScH4.html

Dennis - A slight issue with your comment that "just when the Cheetah was starting to get a name for itself using its great speed and handling".........It absolutely had great speed ability due to its incredible power to weight ratio, but the car's handling was plagued with serious problems inherent in its ultra small wheelbase and poor/inadequate frame physics.

Then when the new body style came out a lot of people didn’t like it. They said it looked like a Vega (which it kinda did). I’m pretty sure that David Holls designed the second generation Camaro though, not the first. The 69 was basically the same as the 67 and 68. @D.A.L. - Sorry, but I have to take issue with that statement. It was better in one way only.....its hp to weight ratio. Outside of that, it was a veritable oven to drive in a race, very uncomfortable driving position, serious handling issues, overheating problems that were finally corrected with a NASCAR radiator, and of all things to put on a car like this 4 wheeled missle.......frickin drum brakes! The Cheetah was definitely a cool car visually, but a failure on the road racing circuit. Good for one type of racing only - drag racing!

Is there any type of connection between the 'Cheetah' roadster with the #110 on the car and the old 1955 Porsche 950 Spyder driven by the actor James Dean the day he died in a horrific car crash on the way to a race at Laguna Seca? The actor died but his mechanic survived the crash. The Porsche also had the 110 insignia on the hood of the car and was purportedly a 'cursed' car that not only killed James Dean but led to the deaths of several people who purchased the parts from the wrecked car.

One of the last great years for cars until they started doing silly things like running rubber hose lines from the carb that ran to the firewall and dead ended into a round cylinder bucket for fuel economy.

Absolutely a very cool looking car that was unique in appearance and construction. However, to simply call it legendary does not tell the whole (honest) story of the car. It really was a legendary failure for several reasons. The 427 Cobra was known to be very warm in the cockpit. The Cheetah went well beyond that in being closer to a blast furnace for the driver. One team actually cut the top of the car off in a desperate attempt to make it bearable for the driver! The 90" wheelbase put the driver much closer to the engine headers and there was inadequate venting of the engine compartment. The driving position was quite uncomfortable due to the short wheelbase. There wasn't even room for a driveshaft, and the tailshaft of the tranny hooked directly to the differential! The chassis design left a great deal of issues that contributed to "serious" handling problems. The engine was prone to overheating as a result of inadequate venting, but that was later resolved with the use of a NASCAR radiator. Finally, the car was equipped with drum brakes rather than the much more versatile and effective discs........? Not sure whose idea that was but it was a bad one considering this car's incredible power to weight ratio! The car ended up being good for one kind of racing - straight line drag racing, but overall, the car was a failure on road racing circuits which it really was designed for.

A buddy had a Nova 70 or so, set up to race but drive home. Scary car, break your neck fast! 😨 🤣 So much fun, but scare me? Oh, now remember airplane fuel, that would do it ?
