The Candidates Tournament 2018 is an eight-player double round-robin chess tournament, which will be held in Berlin, Germany, from 10-28 March 2018. The winner earns the right to challenge the defending world champion, Magnus Carlsen of Norway, in the World Chess Championship 2018.
The tournament will be contested as a double round-robin with each player playing 14 games. This means players will face each other twice (once with black pieces and once with the white pieces). Four rest days will take place: after rounds 3, 6, 9, and 12. The winner of this 8-player candidates tournament will be the challenger of Magnus Carlsen at the World Chess Championship 2018.
The prize fund (Regulations 3.8.1) is 420,000 euros, with 95,000 to the winner, 88,000 to second, 75,000 to third, down to 17,000 for last place. Prize money will be divided equally between players on the same score.

Kramnik played his last mover before the last +15 min addition on move 60 under extreme time pressure. I think he had only TWO SECONDS left on his clock at the moment of his 60th move. Probably that's why he blundered

You missed the main winning idea which Kramnik missed which was pocked up by commentators and also fabi in analysis after game press conference, and that was c4, almost wins by force, b4 is a lot slower, although should still win, but makes it a lot harder.

9:30 .. I watched the game online, Kramnik spent a lot of time on 39. Rb7, so just suppose GGM's alike Kramnik saw this variation, who knows why he played Rb7, but maybe after (10:20) Rxe3-Rg4 and exchange on g4 he didn't like the threat of Fabianas connected pawns! Anyway, Vladimir seemed to had a bad day yesterday, he made few more mistakes. For ex - some IM commented online that b4 was a good move because of (11:03) 44.d8Q ( not c4?) - Bxd8 45.Rd7+ - Ke5 46.Bc6 (!) white wins the exchange and got rid of, what turns out later to be the crucial piece or like you love to name it, the Monster-Bishop :D

Why would white bring a queen into the game on the c file with no check when he could advance on the D file with a check?
@undersci
@undersci 6 лет назад
Kramnik's whole point of giving up the a7 pawn was to play Rg8, which he thought won the game. He thought that Caruana couldn't play Bf6 because then he would drop the rook on g4, since the knight defending it is pinned by the other rook on e1. But Kramnik realized too late he couldn't take the rook because then Kf5 wins for black - threatening the white rook and threatening mate down on a1. Missing the mate threat down on a1 is what likely cost Kramnik the game.
@DavidRa73
@DavidRa73 6 лет назад
At 12:51 why would you promote with c8Q and not d8Q+? There doesn't seem to be a way for black to continue promotion (for example, ... Bxd8, cxd8Q+ Rxd8, Rd7+ and either the white rook is taken followed by a8Q slicing the king and protecting the h pawn queening square, or something like a8Q+ followed by swallowing the black rook on d8). I know I must be missing lots.
@sixjhontongalamar979
@sixjhontongalamar979 6 лет назад
DavidRa73 I guess after Rd7+ there's Kc6 attacking the rook and you can't capture the rook on d8 because of h1Q+, also you can't promote via a8Q+ as the rook is still protecting it, so you might move your rook to h7 to protect the h1 square and after Ra8 Rxh2 Rxa7+ both b4 and f4 pawn might fall leads to draw or something. What do you think?

Because after Kf5, threatening to capture the rook, black is also threatening checkmate via Ra1. So white queened in order to distract the bishop and then the rook can be captured

@kaielGL
@kaielGL 6 лет назад
At 14:13 after black plays Kd5, why didn't white go for Rxf6? Black can't punish with 2...Ra1+ because of 3. Kb2, and if 3... Rxe1 then 4. Kxb3 getting the knight leaving wite with a rook and a bishop vs a rook for Black. So, i don't really know.
@ignacioandresv3170
@ignacioandresv3170 6 лет назад
Kaiel Gerosa Then you don't have a way to stop the passed H pawn. Even with the f6 rook, black can just promote and after an exchange, black would be up a rook

Rxc2 by Caruana BEFORE h6 protecting the bishop probably wins the game. If RxB, then RxB with a much better game, and if white defends the bishop then Bf6, threatening to win on g2.

after kmamniks 2nd pawn reached a7..he could play rook to b8 forcing to capture the rook and promoting a7 pawn to a queen.
@waccle8335
@waccle8335 6 лет назад
At 7:36... wouldn't rook to A8 be a great move? The black rook is forced to capture the white rook since it will create the destruction of a discovered check, after rook captures rook, the bishop captures on A8 and now there's a deadly past D pawn for white. Am I missing something? Edit: The bishop on G5 may be protecting the pawn from advancing forward, but the rook would just simply go all the way from D1 to D8, creating another check. 2nd Edit : Oh wait nvm, the horse on E3 will just capture the rook... bleh didn't see that.. I'm still a noob at chess xd
