NOBODY believed me as a guitar player from the 80's, when purple Rain first came out ( i listened to that album over and over )I told all my hair band buddies Prince was a Phenom on the Guitar, they all laughed. Everyone now is learning what i already knew. Hands down the best musician, singer, song writer to have ever lived.
Same hear bro I grew up with him I had so many friends from my child hood that thought I was crazy when I said he was the most gifted in any room he was in n those that really know music knew it too only after he passed those child hood friends offered me condolences but apologies for not seeing what I knew years ago
Nobody had more tools. He played 27 instruments on his 1st album. Dance, sing, writes, produces, sex symbol, actor, more..... All at the highest level.
@@FramrodLiggins singing all vocals and playing all instruments, including acoustic, electric, and bass guitar; acoustic and Fender Rhodes piano; synth bass; various keyboard synths by Oberheim, Moog, and ARP; orchestra bells, harmonica, drums and percussion, saxophone, in the percussion world there are many different instruments they are classified as separate instruments and he played them all, xylophone, chimes, harpsichord similar to piano, slide, lap, Congo's, the list goes on there are more.
If anyone was there, let me know. I’m 60, so I was 20 in 84. Incredible story. Seen Prince about 9 times. I Was a ticket scalper that sat outside jolly joints in flushing overnight for tickets. In 85????? I went to 4 shows at Nassau Coliseum. 1 night, he played about 1/2 to the backstage. with the curtain still up. Can’t remember completely but maybe before opening band. Rushed to the back and what a gem. At the other night, concert over, lights on. Everybody leaving. I decided with my friends to light up the joint(those days it was ok) it was about empty and we started going out, the stairs blah blah, just as we were walking out, I heard music starting to play, I told my friends ….that’s live music. Let’s check it out. Since Prince played the backstage “concert” I was like fuuuuuck can it be? We ran in ….bro Prince played Raspberry Beret , little rd corvette , and just jammed, I mean guitar jam. Maybe 200 people left….we were right there. It was maybe 1/2 hr? 1 in a lifetime. That’s god I had that last joint left. And I was there at MSG 2010 when he asked Kim K to go up on stage to dance. He was like “move”. Then he was like , you can’t dance, get off the stage” and threw her off lol
We knew he was amazing since “Bambi”! Other Musicians didn’t pay attention because of what he looked like and because he wrote pop hits. That man played, wrote produced, composed and sang. He was sick in bass and drums too! He was also amazing on piano. For those of you that are late to the party, Welcome to the Experience
The bass solo on the outro of Bambi is still unparalleled! The accapella layered vocals on track one of For You let me and my friends know that this was a generation influencing and culture shifting artist!
What amazes me is that he was seemingly just as good on the bass, drums, and keyboard. That is why I don’t get too mad that the world didn’t know he was such a great guitarist.
@@shanaeshafree7692In the 80s I was a teen and all my white friends would laugh at me when I said that Prince was just as good as Eddie Van Halen or whatever rock guitarist was on the radio.
Prince came out in 1978, an album or two put out every year since his debut, videos, tours, tv appearances, but yet many of these other Musicians acting like they just woke up out of a 40 year coma, to say "Oh I didn't know he could play guitar like that" Give me an effing break.!!
The unique thing about Prince is I believe he WAS music. Any instrument he played was merely a spigot letting loose an infinite stream of musical perfection. That not to disrespect the work he put in perfecting his crafts in every way, but I've never heard anyone else play a well known cover and casually reveal new top notes/ new harmonies that sounded like they should have been in the original. He heard music in 4D that the rest of us do well to hear in 3D.
Prince was the Most underrated player, singer, artist of all time. I remember listening to his first album when I was nine years old. I have to say to this day, he is and always will be the greatest and most talented, God like human being to have ever lived. He mastered every one of the 27 different instruments he played. I have no more words to describe the greatest artist that lived.
@@Lovingleroy I do love Prince but where did this 27 instruments thing come from??? He played guitar, Bass, Drums and keyboards on his records. What are the other 23 instruments?
I going to put it like this. Unabashedly- For any musician who downplays or denies Prince's talents. His incredible musicianship. Here is some advice: You are entitled to your opinion. But keep that to yourself. Because if you share that openly to someone else, 4 things: 1) they will conclude that you are jealous 2) you are straight up lying 3) BOTH 4) And they would be right
@mrfester42 seeing you want to speak for them, its obvious you are one of them. Please pardon me because I didnt know I was referring to YOU. Sorry my opinion threatened you and got you emotionally bent out of shape.
Had Prince not been so brilliant at everything, instruments, writing, singing, dancing etc., and concentrated on guitar like Hendrix, he would have maybe taken the crown from Jimmi. I consider them equal, only because of the above.
@allangow4746 that's an interesting viewpoint. Prince was aware of others comparing him to Hendrix. His personal opinion on this? During one interview, he felt the comparison was more of a matter because he and Jimi were both black standout guitarists. But he felt that his guitar playing was closer to Carlos Santana than Hendrix.
I still get the chills when I see him KILL the While My Guitar Gently Weeps solo at the R&R HoF induction with legends on the stage. THAT’S rockstar presence! Got to see him in 2003 or 2004 at the Staples Center in LA and the entire place never sat down or chilled out for a second! Looking around me was every race of every age group with the biggest shit eating grins on their faces. Best live performance I’ve even been fortunate to experience.
I am always amazed how many people are sleepin on Prince as a guitarist. Dude is on the Mt Rushmore of guitar players IMHO. He deserves to be mentioned alongside Hendrix and SRV and EVH
@@doctorpatient519 i can name five country guitar players that could wipe the floor with that midget. Yes, prince can play fast scales ( so can most professional guitar players). But for a guy who had soul, it didn’t come out in his playing. Way better entertainer than player. Billy Corrigan plays every instrument on his songs. Doesn’t mean he’s deserving of a Mt. Rushmore title. Keep buying the hype fan boy…❄️
There is a legendary Purple Rain performance in Syracuse in 1985. Before hearing that I’d never heard a guitar hit those kind of notes in the 5 minute or so guitar solo he pulled off
As a drummer/ musician for 45+ years starting out as a Rock, Punk player and evolving into what I found I was naturally a groove pocket funk drummer I secretly listened to PRINCE and would try and tell the metal shredders about The GENIUS OF PRINCE and his guitar virtuosity and they'd laugh at me!?? Funny they praise his genius now!!!
His performance at the George Harrison memorial blew me away. I never saw someone play so precise so on key so perfect it literally blew my mind. Every now and again, I would go back to watch him perform. Amazing !!!
Prince is the reason why I took a guitar seriouly after wstching a concert on tv. I was 10 years old and said to muself I want to play like him. Of course I never achieved such a thing...
Back in the days when others saw him as competition they didn't want to acknowledge his greatness.. but right after Purple Rain, whenever i knew Prince was playing in New York.. i made sure i was in the audience getting blessed. So i'm like what do you mean you "saw him holding the guitar, but didn't see him play it much" 1:46 .. That was your loss duke.. Purple Rain earned an Academy Award.. that's a guitar manifesto.. All guitar players should see that as an accomplishment for the guitar team.. & that was just around the beginning .. Anyway.. He sprinkled his magic dust.. and did it for all of us.. and then kicked the vault open and said goodbye... if's been really different since Prince tipped out
It’s funny how people are now just realizing Prince was a master guitar player all sense that Tom Petty induction. I guess I don’t understand how they didn’t know that before I’ve been watching him shred guitar for 30 years along with every other instrument😅 but now all of a sudden people get it😅😅
I fell in love with his music when i was around 12-13yrs now 49yr i couldn't get enough of his magical music day n night feeding off it singing purple rain doves kiss and his early track (i wanna be your lover) what a legend
You missed Jack White. He said he met Prince at some industry thing, he wondered a bit what he might be like. Jack said Prince shook his hand warmly and was a nice, approachable guy. He told Jack, ''No one will ever tell you how to play your guitar Jack''.
Prince was a special gift to the universe no doubt about it 🤘💯🔥🎸❤️ There was absolutely nothing he couldn’t do for real…. A very unique soul and spirit…. We will see you again dude…..❤❤❤❤❤
I remember watching and listening to Purple Rain in the 80s because I had an older brother that had that album and watched the movie. That was when I realized that he was a good guitar player, as well as a straight up badass entertainer. He had the dance moves of James Brown and played guitar like Hendrix. What was not to like?
On an interview with prince for a music mag he got asked" Whats it like to be the best guitar player in the World", Dunno he replyed, Ask Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
1:59 How how the f***? How can this man, who's in the music profession, not know Prince, who's been playing since the 70s, and was a bad a$$ on the guitar!??? It's bc he didn't want to know. White Europeans, though, had no such disrespect or ignorance.
@RockPolitics Well, you clearly don't understand that professional guitarists, at its highest level, are a rare breed. "In 2001, Rolling Stone named him(Gibbson) the 32nd greatest guitarist of all time."🤷 Other great electric guitarists know other greats, even across genres and the world! Not to mention, Prince's guitar was all over the 80s media. But if you want to make yourself justify this man's supposed ignorance about Prince, that's on you buddy. But I will not.
“I knew he held the guitar but I didn’t see him play it much?” The fuck? ZZ Top’s Eliminator album dropped in 1983. Purple Rain dropped in 1984. Let’s Go Crazy was on number 1 for many weeks ZZ Top wasn’t even in the Top 20. He knows damn well Prince could play. He just didn’t want to give him credit UNTIL the performance at the Rock Hall. I can’t believe he said that.
They got caught off guard because they were shallow and didn't respect him him because of their chosen genre. That solo was a joke compared to what black artists already knew about PRINCE.
I strongly disagree with John Mayer! Prince wasn’t the best pop musician, he was indeed the KING OF MUSIC!!! I didn’t think that I could ever give anyone that title but Prince overwhelmingly deserves that title, why? Because he wasn’t just pop, he was more rock than John Mayer could ever be and more rock than artist who are labeled rock artists. With that said, he covered pretty much the spectrum of Music. I would ask (if you’re reading this) John to please fix your broken comment about Prince being the best pop musician because he was far more than pop! 🙄 He was the teacher where most of the other artists were students.
Sure he was a great guitarist, but I never related to his music. A lot of his music is monotonous, "When Doves Cry" is a good example. It's like a two chord progression and a two note vocal. Most of his music is just about sex and getting laid. Life is more varied than that; actually I think the best music focuses on the sadness of life, this in fact what the whole genre of the Blues is all about; and anyone with a brain knows that the Blues is the D.N.A. of American music.
It's funny when someone categorized his music but haven't heard all of it. He was more than sex. One thing I like is the fact that he didn't follow the rules. A song you think should have a bass part he didn't use or how he would use a brass section
you know nothing about his music it's obvious....'just about sex and getting laid? That's laughable to people who know his catalogue....He wrote about many other topics like love, God and political songs to name a few. ....and the 2 note chords and vocals that bored you became a number one hit.
He was good guitarist his guitar solo on while my guitar gently weeps… wow and for someone as untalented as a song writer & performer as you suggest he sold a lot of records.. and wrote a lot for other musicians.. I’ve heard of him, funnily enough I’ve never heard of your songs
