BBC comedies in the 1970s were done on a shoestring budget. They often had to do a scene in one take, and any mistakes were left in. The same was true in the early days of cinema. Buster Keaton did all of his stunts too, usually on one take.
@emaloney2211
@emaloney2211 5 лет назад
I never saw Michael as the Phantom and the others I have seen have had a booming or deeper voice but Micheal’s voice has an ethereal tone to it which makes his Phantom more chilling and ghostly. His version of ‘Music of the Night’ is worth a listen.

darren retro yes they had multi cameras rolling but each shot was only done once.
@paulkennedy8701

@darren retro The claim was "one take", not "one shot".
@paulkennedy8701
@paulkennedy8701 5 лет назад
@darren retro You are still mixing up 'takes' with 'shots'. Of course the entire sequence was not done as a single bit of action. That would be simply impossible. (Apart from anything else, most of it was filmed on location but it finished on video and in the studio.) The sequence is made up of a large number of shots. And each of those shots will have been a different setup. The claim is simply that each shot was completed in one take. In other words, none of the setups needed to be done over again.

Michael Crawford has a long career record going back to the mid nineteen fifties when he was a child actor.He later found fame (in England anyway) in the sixties, notably in Richard Lester's 'The Knack' and 'The Jokers'.Quintessential 'swinging London' films.

I love how you still question how these old fashioned values, comedy and stunts existed with disbelief...it was a different era but they are the sort of crazy eccentric things Brits love most. They are what makes us quintessentially British and why we actually reject anything that takes that away...laughter and being able to laugh at yourself is an important part of our British way of life.

Michael Crawford has a history as a performer reaching back to his childhood. At the age of 14 he played in Benjamin Britten’s opera for children ‘Noye’s Fludde’, and had the highest respect for Britten, who he found kind and encouraging. And of course he co-starred with Barbra Streisand and Walter Matthieu in the film of ‘Hello Dolly’. There is a wonderful clip on RU-vid of him playing and talking about his performance in ‘Noye’s Fludde’. He was also the first Sammy in ‘The Little Sweep’, and soloist in the early recording of ‘A Boy was Born’, both by Britten.

In response to your question about if he ever got hurt, Michael Crawford was asked that very question on Australian TV Current Affairs programme a few years back and his answer was "No." All of the stunts were well planned and executed with precision. For instance, the going under the moving truck scene - he waited until the 3rd or 4th take to even attempt it because the truck driver was going too fast. The bus was on the 3rd take when he finally caught onto it. He kept "missing it" - his words.

Very talented singer and comedian. Worth watching him in film musicals as well as stage musicals. He is good in Hello Dolly with Barbra Sreisand. He kicks off the big Put On Your Sunday Clothes song (think the Wall-E song if you have seen that with the children). And is the romantic lead in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way To The Forum which also starred that master of his own stunts, Buster Keaton as well as Phil Silvers and Zero Mostel. He still performs. I saw him narrating Britten's Noye's Fludde in a production in Southwark recently. Thanks. Good luck with the British comedy. Not sure what you have still to do. Blackadder is excellent and Fawlty Towers is a personal favourite too. I think the best British comedy film is Life of Brian. From your side of the pond I think MASH was brilliant.

The main sequence was filmed, but the last bit, when he goes into the shop, it's actually in front of the audience - he matched the film and skated on the fall into the cot in front of a live audience. Michael Crawford and Jackie Chan share that stunt - they've both roller-skated under lorries. When he goes into the shop, the rest of it is done live before the studio audience. The DVD subtitles give up at this point "Audience laughter and applause drowns actors' lines" They did that at least once more, on the motor-cycle sequence: most on film, then he crashes on to the set and does the rest live.

Another hilarious one from this excellent series, is the Wendy House episode. There's this one scene where the Insurance Man comes round to Frank's new house, to asses the damage and the cost, for his damaged furniture (which got damaged during the moving house). Frank, Betty, Insurance Man all sit down together on the sofa, and the Insurance man starts to sink slowly out of the bottom of the sofa. If you look at Betty, she has to hide her face to hide her laughing, Frank struggles to keep away the giggles to, and you can clearly see the Insurance Man breakup to.

I was lucky enough to have seen Michael Crawford along with Sarah Brightman when Phantom of the Opera first opened in London 1986.. and I like everyone else was blown away by his voice...especially as nobody even knew he could sing, we had only ever known him as Frank Spencer...I'll never forget how wonderful he was...or the audible gasps of the audience when he started to sing ... It was a magical moment when a truly gifted artist shone and was recognised..The applause was deafening..At the end I thought the standing ovations would never end..Nobody wanted them to either, except for a genuinly surprised and humbled Michael.
