Correction: The bunker Aloy falls into as a child is a ZD housing facility for Gamma/Beta personnel.

This was one of the plot twists, or just developments, that shook me to my core. It absolutely SHOCKED me - blew my mind, as well as the AI subroutines thread and the details of the FARO plague leading to the total extinction of humanity. It was these parts of the game that elevated it from an 8/10 to a clear 9/10.

While these data points were chilling, what really bothered me were the "edited" and "approved" audio messages that were being sent out of one of the facilities (I forget which). I remember stumbling across certain messages from soldiers, saying how hopeless the war is, and then stumbling across the same message but edited to sound hopeful. The military, editing outside communications and preventing inbound communications reaching their soldiers, because it contained info of the bleak situation outside? That's awful.

As awful as it is, you also have to bear in mind what the video says. They couldn't let everyone know what was really going on and what the situation was really like, or people would just give up. They had to make it seem like they were having a fighting chance, for better or worse.

It's unlikely that the bunker Aloy found as a child was Elysium; if you returned to the bunker when Aloy was grown, you'll discover Director Evans' announcement that the Wichita Salient had been breached. She goes on to tell her listeners that they would have the option of leaving the bunker (they were going to open the doors for ten minutes, as I recall), or to accept medical euthanasia--which many obviously did. Also, as at least one other commenter pointed out, it seems to me that Elysium would be a good deal bigger than this bunker seemed to be. I expect that Aloy will eventually find Elysium in her continuing journeys, and perhaps even Ted--that asshole--Faro's bunker. I just hope the followup game(s) in the Zero Dawn series will be as excellent as this one was. By the bye, thanks so much for this series. I find it quite fascinating and well done.

Over all the years I've played, of all the times I've disliked a villain for what they did - Ted Faro is easily the one I hate most. Most villains, I'm fine with them being disposed of so recovery can begin... but Ted? I'd like him to die repeatedly, once for every person he killed, and once for every person that was denied their history, and died as a result. It may take until the sun burns out, but I'm ok with that.

I agree with you Kevalin. I think this first ruin was a dormatory/work area for those working on the cradle facility nearby (Mother's Watch?). It seems to me that this section was cut off from the rest when the Horus attacked causing cave ins. I also don't think HZD would have allowed two facilities to be so close together. Hundreds of miles/kilometers would have been too close.

I think it's pretty darn likely that there are survivors of Elysium in the New Age. Along with the Alphas, the ZD Betas and Gammas were the best, brightest, and most capable of their generation, the planet's foremost experts in exactly the disciplines that might have allowed them to find some way of extending Elysium's capacity to support human life the additional 150 years it took GAIA to re-green the Earth. They presumably had access to most of the tools and equipment used to fabricate Elysium itself since the facility seems to have been designed from scratch and could have used it to develop and construct cloning or cryostasis facilities, hydroponic farms GAIA herself may have eventually devised a means of saving them and may have directed one of her subroutines like HEPHAESTUS to construct it. She was, after all, in constant contact with her various remote sites across the glove via some unknown and undetectable communications channel that may have connected her to Elysium as well.

David you forget that everyone that chose to live out their lives in Elysium was to be sterilized. It is possible Gaia figured out a way to put everyone in stasis but unlikely. Her focus needed to be on the plan, which included repopulating the world, and not on a few hundred survivors who couldn't help repopulate.

I'm almost positive the bunker from the beginning of the game is a Zero Dawn facility staffed by betas/gammas who were working on the construction of Eleuthia-9, since it's right next to it, and we know that the Cradle facilities were one part of Zero Dawn that had to be constructed by humanity before the end, not GAIA's responsibility like the Cauldrons were. The personnel who killed themselves and whose final thoughts we hear as Aloy were meant to evacuate to Elysium when their work was done, which is where Isaac and his mother are, but they weren't able to because the Faro bots broke through the Witchita salient before they were ready.

Kinda late to the party, but, there is a data point inside GAIA Prime that says that Elysium is only a few miles away (from G Prime). Though i do not believe this facility inside the nora lands is connected to Elysium. It could be that this small facility was a gamma Eleuthia site with the purpose to finish programming after the construction of such a facility was finished. The tube (a rapid transit system?) inside at the small facility looks as if it is(was?) connected to the cradle as it points directly to All-Mother Mountain.

It could just be the tube was just an entrance point in and out of the facility. Like similar to the Vault entrance in the Fallout games. And I agree that the bunker housed the employees overseeing the construction of the cradle facility. At the end, they were given the option to abandon the facility (if they didn’t want to do the suicide option in the community room) however I’m sure they were given a suicide kit on the way out just in case.. and travel on foot to wherever the road took them I guess. But in a sense, it would still be suicide... if they chose to go outside, they would have to wear rebreathers since the oxygen was depleted at the time. And once the swarm reached their location, they would be consumed.. I’m sure that would be a painful experience to be eaten by the swarm...

You know seems the new world of Horizon Zero Dawn isn't as primitive as it seems. I mean yea, if you only looked at Nora and stuff it may seem primitive but Meridian seems very 19th century with working elevators and all that. And remember knowledge isn't everything, as well as one of the big thing about the medieval age is the lack of quality metals. Steel was extremely expensive in the old days because it was extremely labor intensive to produce, and it wasn't until the LATE 19th century that it was mass produced via the Bessemer process. The world of Zero Dawn didn't have this problem as all they had to do is hunt machines for quality steel... and cauldron facility probably refines steel in massive quantities as well as all the old Faro robots contains a ton of good quality metal. So that meant using steel as building material isn't impossible in the world of Zero Dawn as it is in our history. Much of our present world's technology is actually a question of scale rather than raw technology (except in computing or something). You know a suit of armor in the old days costs more than a castle. Only nobles wore steel armor because they were just that expensive. In fact if you had to time travel to the old days, take a bunch of random worthless steel tools with you. Then you'll be a rich man being a blacksmith producing perfect steel weapons. This applies to things like firearms too, without quality steel it was hard to make a gun that wouldn't explode.

Learning more about Elysium, I wonder if after the sixty years it took for GAIA to acquire a "kill-switch" signal and broadcast it from the MINERVA towers, if Elysium's sealed entrance(s) would have unlocked and allowed the surviving children of any of the Beta/Gamma personnel to venture out on to the wasteland that would have been Earth, assuming there was still anyone alive in Elysium. Sure to you or me it would seem pretty damn bleak, but to a person trapped in a bunker for 60 odd years, perhaps not even being old enough to remember the "outside" when they first entered, being able to take a step outside, albeit in a Hazmat suit, would probably be the greatest day of their lives.
@beastmotoz
@beastmotoz 4 года назад
It's very hard to tell if people inside the Elysium even survived or not, there's just a hint we get from a recording from GAIA prime facility that Elysium is just few miles away the the G. prime facility but not the exact location of it which means The Elysium has to be somewhere in the HZD map. But Elysium was meant to hold up people who were inside it for just 100 years and also they had limited supplies, Now if Aloy does finds Elysium it would be interesting what she finds most likely more dead bodies and their recording or maybe people inside Elysium repopulated and we will find more people in there but still this theory just sounds impossible.

i'm fairly certain that the ruin we found there wasnt elysium, elysium would have had to have the same level of security as the cradels or GAIA prime, so i doubt that theres any chance of it being breached from the surface...no i think the facility we were exploring was one of ZD's secondary research labs, one that was too far away for the workers there to make it to elysium in time after they finished there work so instead they sealed the lab...kept working till the last second, till gaia prime was sealed and disconected from the network to prevent if rom being traced, and then the staff kept going till the new year after zero day...and opted to end it...some in a darker way then others.

I think this bunker was for Gamma actively working on reproductive tech for both humans and machines. There are some structures inside that resemble crèches and ones that look like they were used to make small test bots. This site also cannot be Elysium because according to the accounts the day they all committed suicide was around New Years. According to Elizabet’s journals she had to close up the bunkers around the 16th of that January. This site was in the path of the swarm trying to get to the bunker in the north (I forget it’s name) where the marines whose journals we find had their last stand. That may have been Elysium; hopefully we get more info on it in the future.

I don't get why they couldn't grow their own food in the elysium bunkers? Other games like fallout have bunkers that are capable of growing fresh produce and animals, so I don't see what was stopping them from making a fully automated self sustaining argicultural system within the bunkers that could provide food for the survivors? It's not like they needed compler vegetables, they has cryogenically preserved seeds of all kinds of vegetables, so that means if they grew some, they could always reharvest the seeds (more seeds now perhaps) and even grow different ones if they want some variety. And this could all been done via a greenhouse and automated system. I think if they got more people to work on ZD, Elysium could have been a self sustaining bunker capable of hosting humans indefinitely

It's not that simple, the idea of humanity living for centuries in the underground of a bunker is irrealistic. The vaults of Fallout are not in any way realistics, and Horizon tries to make things more believable, but basically, you have inbreed, oxygen problems, the fact that eventually the systems will start to fail, lack of water (you can't just take of the outside, the biosphere was literally destroyed), even if they lived to see the Faro prague stopped by GAIA, they would never survive long enough to see the world restaured to living conditions. If that bunker from the beginning is any indication of how things went down, it's likely that a good chunk of what should have been Elysium's carefully controlled population never made it there, meaning they'd have had a surplus of air/water/food/etc. The were smart people and even if they were all sterilized, they just got done figuring out a million different ways to create life from nothing in the span of a year and had decades of time on their hands.

I'm going to say now, and I would bet money on this, the bunker Aloy fell into as a child is not Elysium, nor does it have anything to do with Elysium. From the audio logs found, it's clear that the bunkers entirety had been euthanized upon completion of whatever it is they were working on, or as the swarm inched closer. Zero Dawn would have required thousands of people working in it from bunkers most likely, spread all across the US. Many of the bunkers would have been retrofitted to be used as needed, but not all of them would have been sustainable long term. Only the high level, Alphas and Betas, would have been informed of the true nature of everything to come. The Alphas were residing in Gaia Prime, where they were killed by Faro, and the Betas would have been transported to Elysium. The remaining workers in the various other bunkers, most likely were told the lie like everyone else, and kept in the bunkers as their families were elsewhere, remaining there until the swarm had destroyed the biosphere, causing all remaining humans outside the bunkers to die off from a lack of oxygen and a poisoned landscape. Then, as the bunkers we're not designed for long term living, and they would not seal up enough to prevent the swarm from detecting them, the inhabitants would have been euthanized in order to save them the pain for what was to come if the swarm reached them, or from dying of starvation. Then the bunkers would be shut down and would remain buried over the centuries. This is what I believe is the bunker that Aloy stumbled into, just another cog in the machine building Zero Dawn, never intended to last past it's usefulness. I hope Elysium is found in Forbidden West, that would be cool to comb through, but I definitely don't believe it was the one in ZD....
