I'm thinking Tristan didn't want his marriage to be like his parents he said that they loved the idea of each other. His dad wanted somethings like living out in the wild & away from civilization especially the govt. And his mom wanted to live among society, having mindless chatter & gossip, she hated living out in the middle of nowhere around the bears. as One Stab said "She was strange woman anyway" lol he would never say that to daddy Ludlow out loud. Quite true Isabel did know Tristan better she grew up with him Susannah didn't she wanted what he couldn't & wouldn't give her. He never professed his love for her, he just tolerated her he felt bad that Alfred left him because he couldn't stomach seeing Susannah & Tristan together. Had Susannah been sent back to Boston Alfred would've likely stuck around longer or he would've went to Boston to be with Susannah (Which would've been a mistake on his part).
@@youtubehatesfreespeech2555there are people who bring you back from your troubles. I am prone to melancholy. I am a bit like Tristan. My partner brings me back each time wthout saying a word. He is my "Isabel".
@@ellieborla9243 No, Tristan wasn't melancholic. He had an inner conflict because of how Samuel died. I understand people want to relate but in this case your neuroticism is just a part of your character... Tristan never exhibited any signs of depression or melancholy prior to Samuel's death...and he was already over it once he met the grown-up Isabel.
@@youtubehatesfreespeech2555 there is mich more to that. In the film it clearly says that he had the peaceful part of his life thanks to Isabel. He always was wilder. And there is the connection with the bear that is worth exploring. Your reading is very shallow.
I liked her too it's just the moment she saw Tristan she already felt like she was engaged to the wrong brother. She was already cheating on Sam then she didn't waste time moving in on Tristan only she picked the wrong time to do it. She thought she found her happily ever after, too bad Tristan was suffering mentally & couldn't as well as wouldn't give her what she wanted. She even tried to baby trap him into staying with her at the ranch when he was planning to leave. When she said "I can make it better for you" Tristan "How?" Susannah "If we had a child or if I were pregnant would you still be going?" And Tristan looks at her like she had lost her mind to which he quietly says "Yes" She starts to get upset & desperate "Just give me a chance" & Tristan says "Don't do that." He was going to leave no matter what & in case Susannah had forgotten he almost stabbed her when she touched him in his sleep Tristan was still haunted by the war & Sammy. Then when the man she wanted didn't want her anymore what does she do? Instead of getting out of his life for good she goes & hooks up with his brother whom she doesn't have feelings & whom she doesn't love just to keep herself in Tristan's life. I'm guessing in her mind Susannah felt her life was screwed either way whether she goes back to Boston & marry a Mr. Nice Guy & settling down in a nice society or marrying another Mr. Nice Guy who's acquired money, power, connections but is still connected to the life she really wanted living out in the wild with a man who isn't playing by the rules. A place she felt she could be free to express herself but now she's put herself in a place where she feels unhappy & confined especially as a woman. As we can see in Alfred's world Susannah isn't very happy at all she's just going with it quite frankly it's her own fault she didn't have to go find Alfred she trapped herself into the life she had with him. I also think Susannah is unable to have kids because she said in a letter that she & Alfred tried to have kids but couldn't so I think Susannah is barren which is why she was so heartbroken when she sees Isabel 2 with the man & life she wanted. Isabel doesn't rub it in Susannah's face she can see how crushed & envious Susannah is but like I said nobody put a gun to Susannah's head & told her to marry Alfred.
@@sueryan8320 it really is a special film. Each character is a little in all of us. Longing for meaning and taking on all of life's unfortunate moments
Will always remember the scene where she gets shot. It was so sad. And the way Brad Pitt twisted his face around so much, I could really sense the anguish in Tristan; it's so real & raw looking. Like a real trauma reaction can be.
I was sad that she loved him when she was a child and when he came back he felt something for her and married her. But then after she was killed. he then wanted his brother's wife again because he actually loved her far longer than he did his own wife. To me that's the sadest because to me it says his own wife was his second choice while she always chose him as her first while his brother's wife couldn't choose between anyone (she kills her self because she couldn't choose which one she actually wanted to be with and so because Tristan and his brother finally had enough so instead of accepting it she takes her life leaving her own husband as a widow)
@@mistyross8831 Did we watch the same movie? If he loved Susanna he would have married her from the get go, not Isabel 2. Did you not see that scene where Susanna (who did not respect that his wife had barely died a few hours ago), basically threw herself at Tristan while he was in jail only for him to reject her? “Go back to Alfred.” A man who loves a woman is never going to tell her to go back to his brother. Which is why she killed herself. Even at the funeral you can see it was Alfred who was torn apart, not Tristan. Watch the scene where Isabel 2 is killed and how he reacts and compare it to when he finds out Susanna has committed suicide, goes to her funeral and is pretty calm and collected. He DIDN’T love her. He never did. When a man loves a woman he does not use her and reject her the way Tristan did to Susanna. It surprises me how you all jump through hoops and can’t see the obvious, which is sadly why a lot women stay in toxic relationships when it’s obvious the man doesn’t love them. Then they are heartbroken when they see him give the next woman everything he didn’t give them. It was Isabel 2 he loved. It was Isabel 2 he married, it was Isabel 2 he mourned, it was Isabel 2 he avenged. ISABEL 2 was the woman he loved, NOT Susanna.
@@mistyross8831 I think you might have misunderstood this part. In the movie , and probably in the novella as well ( not sure as I haven't read it) Tristan refuses Suzanne's advances after his wife's death and she realizes that they are over, which is why she takes her own life.
@@salmaz315I feel for Suzanna since she loved him truly for many years and he just ghosts her with no letter. It is also hard for her to see him and his new family and naming his son the name she was going to name theirs.
I remember when I first watched this movie. I was around 15, and had rented the VHS. My boyfriend back then called me 3 times. I was crying all the 3 times! 😂 I still cry everytime I rewatched it. One of my favorite movies. And Brad was absolutely perfect!!!
What makes this a good movie is that despite their flaws, you truly feel for all the main characters. Alfred, probably the best of his brothers, is responsible and cautious but insists on being with a woman who'll never love him the way he loves her. Tristan is wild, impestous and independent, which is why everyone is drawn to him but unwittingly also causes so much collateral damage around him. Samuel is sweet but naive about the world, which leads his life tragically to be cut short. Susannah is beautiful and cultured but has a passionate side. She doesn't try to cause drama but circumstances beyond her control make it almost inevitable. Her inability to let go of a life with Tristan, who brings out her passionate side, causes her life to be cut short as well.
0:11, this is honestly one of my favorite shots in the movie. It shows Tristan finally at peace and with the woman he loves. Plus it’s a stark contrast to the love scene with Susannah which was all about lust and passion whereas this was actual lovemaking
Beautiful movie. I rewatched it recently, in my 40’s, after not watching it since I was maybe 19 or 20. I interpreted it differently now, as we do with age. Isabelle-2 brought him (much needed) peace, and they had a very simple love. But I don’t believe it was the same love as with Suzanne. I felt badly for Suzanne, waiting all those years for him. She only let go when he wrote her that he didn’t love her anymore and told her to move on. How could he have returned to expect her still there after that? So much heartbreak in this movie.
Susannah was a mess. She caused havoc wherever she was. When she lusted after Tristan, she should've called off the engagement to Samuel and left their home, knowing she couldn't come between brothers .
Like One Stab said "She was like the water that freezes inside a rock and breaks it apart. It was no more her fault than it is the fault of the water when the rock shatters" This movie was brilliant. The cinematography & music 🙌🏼🙏🏼 The acting ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
@@dins5066 it's full of emotion. They don't make films like this anymore. A movie without high effects of graphics. Just people and their own individual struggles
@@seanbannon7939 that's it? Why bother answering if not conclusive ? Especially if the question wasn't directed at you? But you now have the floor. Enlighten us with more emotional details.
@@dins5066 thats it? A useless comment deriding another human, who tried his best to answer your truly pathetic and patronising question. And here I thought you might make yourself useful.
I think Isabel Two was a good spouse for Tristan. Isabel knew how to read people & situations. She knew how to approach people & when to step back. Susanna, unfortunately, seemed more obsessed with Tristan than in love. Susanna was very delusional about her relationship with Tristan. What annoyed me the most with Susanna is that she ignored Tristan's grief. It's one thing to not know how to console a grieving person. It's another thing when you don't acknowledge their pain. Susanna constantly hovered over Tristan rambling about their non-existent future. Not one time did Susanna ever ask Tristan about his feelings regarding Samuel's death. Nor give him encouragement regarding his guilt over Samuel's death.
Alfred somewhat got a happy ending. He finally got his father's love, respect and approval. Plus he adopted his brother's children so he got to raise people who would love him unconditionally since he is their caretaker. He repaired the relationship between him and his brotherm Plus his grimy wife isn't in his life anymore.
The dad somewhat got his respect back when he showed that he really loved his kids in the end. In the beginning he seemed like a control freak in front of his kids, but later on, he proved his genuine love to them
@@charmaineespeut4627 When Tristan asked Alfred to take care of his kids Alfred was like "Seriously bro, you're leaving again? WTF!" But he did get back his father's love, he & Tristan have a bond stronger that ever now. Plus Susannah wasn't there to keep the wedge between them anymore so her suicide was a blessing. Stupid of her to kill herself over a guy who clearly didn't love her when she should've accepted it & moved on but she was out of their lives forever. So the Ludlows are now whole again.
This has got to be the most depressing movie ever made. Everyone in it dies or is unhappy. It's still a good movie. I always felt bad for Susanne. She loved Samuel but there was an instant attraction to Tristan and then falling in love with him. I believed he loved her but had to many demons he was dealing with. She could have probably lived a happy life with Alfred as long as Tristan stayed away but the moment he returned, she was haunted.
Tristan cared about her he didn't love her Susannah told him she loved him but he would never say it back like she wanted him to. He saw her as his brother's girl that he was sleeping with & Tristan felt he was betraying Sam especially before they left to fight in the war. Tristan felt Sammy would've felt so hurt for what he was doing with Susannah so that's why in order to free himself of the demons of the past he sent her the letter to cut him loose & to move on. "Susannah all we had is dead as I am dead, marry another."
6 minutes...sorry Tristan but you don't make liquor Drops with the Family during the Daytime after you've been threatened by the Mob...and with the Children too? Sheesh...
I agree…. They told him the only reason he wasn’t dead was because of Alfred being a congressman. He should have heeded the warning, because these men were very evil, dangerous and greedy. Poor Isabel 2 is killed and then Susannah takes her own life. The movie is very good, but so sad.
When samuel was killed infront of him and he so desperately tried 2 save him i cry soo sad he tells him ur doing good were going home and he dies in Tristans arms heartbreaking then 2 loose the love of his life is crushing 😢
I wonder why Susannah couldn't have children? It broke her heart to see Tristan's at the festival. I notice that Isabel changed car seat places in town with her mother, then she was the one shot instead. So much tragedy in this movie.
“Went with every brother” is such a teen statement. Life is not that simple and some people are more complex than Isobel’s character. Susannah was a classy, high quality, educated woman far superior to Tristan whose main qualities were good looks and his “wild” side. She followed her heart and went for what she wanted with all she had. Her story is truly heartbreaking. She did not deserve such a tragic fate but I guess those who love the hardest always get scorched 😢
I see a lot of comments about Susannah being with all of the brothers but nobody minds Tristan marrying Isobel whom he knew sence she was little girl. Mind you he was an adult back then, but apparently nobody finds that strange.
@EvaSzymacha Girl nothing was classy about Sussanah. Class goes out the window once you start dating the whole family tree. Susannah was selfish and that's why her character ended up that way. She could have had a happy life if she moved on but she choose to date the family.
Experiencing life is winning: The highs, the lows, disappointments, aspirations, simplicity of nature, the complications of living. We have little to no control over events that occur in ours lives, but we do control how we react to those events. Steadfast in loyalties, being true to ones nature, loving with abandon.
No matter what, Tristan should have apologized to Susannah the moment he returned home. She had such a sad, lonely, and tragic life. 😢 It’s so unfair. Both her parents died, her first fiancée died in the war (even if she didn’t love him deeply, she obviously cared about him), her true love leaves her, she marries a man she doesn’t love, and then she discovers she can’t conceive. When the love of her life returns, he does not apologize or give her any closure. Tristan almost make things worse honestly. After all that, Susannah then has to witness Isabel 2 (who has an entire loving family plus more) experience all the happiness she’d always dreamed of. It’s so, so heartbreaking. I do think Tristan and Isabel suit each other better, and loving Susannah was too difficult for Tristan because of her connection to Samuel. It just always bothered me how unlucky her life seemed to be and she didn’t deserve any of it. 😢💔
Tristian was a force of nature , a mixture of sensitivity and wildness. Susannah was attracted to this but Tristian should have kept his distance but instead he moved in on his brothers fiancee. Then the younger brother dies and all the guilt builds up for Tristan around Susannah and his younger brother. Marrying Isabella was marrying back into innocence but ultimately he did not take the gang threats seriously even though he was married and had two children. He was ultimately a very selfish person whose presence called suffering in so many directions. He was like ' hi, I'm so wild and free I can't be held responsible for anyone except my own desires/feelings. If you met him in real life - he would be a one night stand and move on. Not the kind of guy you could build a life with. Susannah having been left on her own in life after her parents died , unfortunately was hanging onto this family as a substitute for her own when she would have been better to have moved on. Alfred who was like his mum preferring town life to wild life , should have married Susannah and moved far away from Tristian and his family if he loved her . Staying too close to all the emotional drama and history was a recipe for disaster which is what followed. Painful movie to watch .
disagree, Susannah was selfish . when she realized she didn't love Samuel, and had an infatuation with Tristan, she should've broken off the engagement and left the ranch Who is she to waste Samuel's life? he deserved someone who loved him. Then she marries Alfred even though she doesn't love him. Tristan was no saint, he should've stayed away from Susannah. The only decent people were Samuel and Isabel
@@aliali-ce3yf Agree. I never liked Susannah. She was spoiled and entitled. She was never going to have Tristan, and when she saw that, she should have moved on with her life. There was no reason to stay with this family. To love and suffer from afar? What an idiot.
Just rewatched this movie recently and was so taken aback by how differently I reacted to This relationship. On first watch it felt like they were fated. Now I watch and I feel like she was just at the right place at the right time when Tristan was ready to settle down. Plus the fact that she’s first introduced as a child and is a teenager still when they marry. I slid the sideye to it this time. I think he loved Susannah and just couldn’t get past his own demons. he didn’t think he was good enough for her and felt great guilt over Samuel but she was his soulmate. Sad tragic heartbreaking story of three brothers in love with the same woman.
@Lauren Diehl That us what I believe iff he loved Susana like you think he would have never left her or send her back to Alfred when she went to see him in jail.
I have seen the film multiple times, and have a slightly different interpretation. Yes, I think they were fated to be together, Isabel 2 stated she would marry Tristan as a child. Now, I also agree that Isabel 2 was in the right place at the right time, I believe that Tristan had to go through so much in order to get past his demons(first with Susannah, realizing she really couldn't be the support he needed and he had to work through his demons on his own), all this allowed for him to be in a place where he could love and accept the love that Isabel had to offer him. Isabel, unlike Susannah, loved Tristan for who he was(and would truly wait forever for him to get himself together) and didn't have to change herself in order to compliment him as a life partner. Susannah, had this romantic idea of who Tristan was and never really appreciated or got beyond this pre-war ideal of who he was and Tristan knew that she would have to change/sacrifice herself for a life with him and would end up resenting him or leaving(in a similar way that his mother abandoned him and his father which had affected him deeply). Anyway, I am not a huge fan of Susannah's choice to end her life, I would have preferred that Isabel 2's death and seeing Tristans love for her would have allowed her to let go and open herself to the love Alfred had for her and in the end she and Alfred would raise Tristans children when he had to go on the run, I thought that would have been so much more satifisfying and ending for her.
I always cried when isabelle 2 gets shot and killed especially when it's especially in front of her family. O'Bannon's I hated they were mean. I always I like how his son Samuel is on Tristan neck. I like how when samuel said grampa said can have uncle sam's gun when I'm bigger. Poor Isabel holding her baby one last time especially Isabel
His love for Isabelle 2 was always based on timing , as much of our lives are. I never felt it was about Isabelle at all, it was always about Tristan being ready
My favorie movies are the ones about unrequited love. You just want them to have a perfect life together and they never do. When the young brother died, Susanna should have married the eldest brother. He was stable minded, he loved her and was career oriented. She fell for the wild one, in which she would never have a future, and Tristan just used her. No one ends up happy but you keep rooting for them all to be happy.
This movie Titanic & The last of the mohicans i couldn't tell you how many times i have watched these movies. This movie is one of my favourite Brad Pitt movies.
That's what she gets for hooking up with her dead fiancés brother 2 days after the funeral. I wouldn't have married her either. She can't be trusted. She even tried to cheat on Alfred by kissing Tristan when he was in jail.
I was so happy to see her as the adult Isabel. I knew her face from a couple a films. She's beautiful. Wish they'd have fleshed out her character a bit more, but ah well.
Dustin Hoffman meet his wife when she was a girl. She’s said she fell in love with him as a kid when he would visit her family. He married her after his divorce from his first wife. They’re 18yrs apart, have 4 kids and have been married for 43 yrs
Me encanta!!
I felt sorry for Susanne cause she never got to really be happy with any of the brothers. Even when Tristan was with her he didn't seem happy. I think they more married to comfort one another during their grief of Samuel but didn't really love each other or at least Tristan didn't seem to really love Susanne. Now once Tristan was with Isabel he was very happy and so was she. I cried when she got shot.
Susannah was not entirely to blame in her relationship with Tristan. Romances take two hands to clap. If he did not care for her at all, why encourage a relationship? Unless he lusted after her rather than loved her. Then when he lost interest in her, he just wrote off their relationship and basically told her to get lost. Instead, he got married to a woman young enough to be his daughter. And that woman seemed to have fixated on him since she was like 5 or 6 years old saying that she would marry him. What does a girl of that age know about things like love and marriage? And he claims that he is in love with her. Funny, he can't love a grown woman but he can fall for someone half his age. I doubt Tristan really loved anyone in his family, except maybe his father. Notice how often he goes running away from home whenever things go south. Then he comes back and just gets married? Makes no sense to me.
Women hate when a man marries a young woman. Susannah was the family bike and no man worth his salt marries that except men like Alfred and lucky/unlucky for women those men outnumber the Tristan's of the world by a large margin.
