The part about Helen not even being in Troy at all was actually something Herotodus himself concluded independently. In his studies, he found the priests of Memphis, Egypt had a local legend about a beautiful Greek woman going home with her husband who was shipwrecked and given hospitality, then when they discovered this wasn't actually her husband they kicked him out at spearpoint and let her crash on their couch until her actual husband showed up. Herotodus believed this is the only explanation for why the king of Troy didn't surrender Helen as soon as the entire Balkan peninsula showed up at his porch, Helen wasn't there to be surrendered. He clearly didn't like Paris as much as Hector anyway, why else would he entertain his horny failson's latest fuckup?

I mean, Paris had no win save bouncing the judgement to someone else, but he was not using logic about it. He wasn't calculating that Aphrodite was the one he wanted to enrage the least. Though what's really funny is how Ares is conspicuously absent for what is the Ancient Grecian version of WWI. I chalk this up to him not wanting to choose sides between his mother, his big sister, and his girlfriend. That and him being sick of his family butting into HIS sphere.

Something that Red doesn’t mention about the Trojan Horse section is that, as part of the lead-up to its construction, Athena instructs the Greeks to sneak into Troy and steal back an artifact dedicated to her that the Trojans have stolen. Odysseus leads a small group of Greeks into the city, but while they’re inside, they’re discovered by Helen. By this point, the love spell Aphrodite cast on her has LONG since worn off, so not only does she not blow their cover, but she also gives them directions to where the artifact they’re looking for is located.

“King of the world” sounds like way too much work to be worth it. And “being really good at war” sounds like a lot of stress too. I side with Paris on this one, choosing Aphrodite was def the best choice. Though it probably wasn’t the right choice either, but tbf its not like Paris knew about the oath.

Sadly 😥 not in hindsight Athena 🦉should have gotten the apple even if hera 🦚 did crown him no one outside of Greece at the time would expect it he would need Athena's gift too for that and Athena could just let him win more parts that can turn into to Greece at the time and he could rule over that

I mean, as a mortal in the ancient greek mythocosmos, i think it is safe to assume you are thoroughly screwed the moment some gods show up in front of you, no matter what you do. So you might as well choose whatever you think gives you the most little moments of joy during your probably miserable last days...

Theirs two games that made me realize the most grand and talked about jobs would be tough for a regular person. The jobs being ruler of the world” and “Evil Genius” theirs a Game called Crusader Kings 3. It’s a grand strategy game that involves gaining power, prestige and land through diplomacy, war, politics or carefully calculated murder. In all cases eventually all the land you’ve acquired gets hard to manage on your own so you turn parts of conquered territory to people you trust and the inter politics that threaten to destroy your empire start creeping up. After a certain point it’s practically impossible to keep even half the world conquered with civil wars all over the place. Then theirs a game called Evil Genius 2 that’s a base building game with you ordering minions out to preform operations that will pave the way to world domination with your cover being a purchased island with a luxury Hotel and Casino. So that your evil base looks like an average island resort. The sheer logistics of keeping this operation together, making sure everything stays in working order, that the island is self sufficient, that your base is comfortable enough that your minions don’t just turncoat and run and a proper security system set in place in case any government agents try snooping around in restricted areas. All in all being an overlord is tough and I wouldn’t be able to do it.

paris had about as much desire to rule as he had for war, the choice was obvious to him... the consequences, not so much, because aphrodite didn't mention the baggage of "every big name in greece will be oathbound to kill you" nor did she really mention the name of the wife or how he'd get her. he probably figured "i'll pick her for a blessed love life and find the perfect wife, best option ever."
@Historyfrek4ever
@Historyfrek4ever 11 месяцев назад
I agree with you, but if I remember correctly kin killing was sacrilegious. That meant you either do the deed and gods get pissed or you get f by fate. Dumping kids in to streets/wilderness was a loophole since they either got adopted or nature ran its course, meaning technically you didn’t kill them yourself.

Regarding the oath - the movie Troy did something interesting with that where yes, it was Odysseus who had suggested it, but Agamemnon of all people really gunned for the idea because he'd been wanting to sack Troy for years, so Aggie is almost HAPPY when his sister-in-law gets stolen away.

To be fair to Paris there’s no winning in that situation, if he chooses Hera then Aphrodite will curse his love life and Athena would definitely mess up some important battle and if he chooses Athena then Aphrodite will still fuck with his love life but Hera will pull some Trials of Hercules nonsense If anything Aphrodite is the smart choice, the other two MIGHT move on but she definitely wouldn’t and Aphrodite is the only one of the three that can just wave her hand and fuck over your life subtly, making your wife fall in love with whoever or whatever she wants, whereas the other two tend to at least work through mortals

The smart choice is to tell Hermes to get someone equally immortal to make the choice
@mordirit8727
@mordirit8727 Год назад
The smart choice is to please Hera. The smart choice is to ALWAYS please Hera. Aphrodite might fuck up your love life, Athena might make you be a dumbass at a moment intelligence is paramount or fuck you up in a battle somewhere, but you never. Ever. EVER. Fuck with Hera. Aphrodite and Athena may fuck with _you,_ but when you mess with Hera, you get what Paris got: family. friends, country, dead, brutalized, erased from the fucking face of the Earth. You fuck with Hera, you're not only dooming yourself to a miserable life that will absolutely end in a terrible and painful death, but you are _also_ dooming literally anyone you ever cared about or even just met by chance to the same fate. And whatever children they have. And their descendants. I'm not even joking, there are still parts in the Aeneid where Hera is _still_ fucking people up, for the crime of having been born in the same city where Paris was born.
@NoahofWill
@NoahofWill Год назад
The only possible person who could have made the choice and come away relatively scott free would have been Zeus, who could have picked Hera and then justified his choice to Aphrodite and Athena by invoking their respective domains (Love and Beauty/Wisdom and Strategy) with "She's the one I chose as my wife and queen, I chose her for her beauty, and choosing anyone *but* her would cause trouble in my house while also potentially invalidating one of the foundations of our marriage." In doing so, Zeus would use their own domains against them while also proving that his choice is not an insult to them. Also, he makes Hera very happy with him, not just as his wife but as the Goddess of Marriage. Could this potentially cause trouble for him down the line? Yes. But cleverness and cunning is usually celebrated in Greek stories, so I imagine any negative consequences would have been very mild.

I would honestly tell the three goddesses that I refuse to choose them based on bribe. I would proceed to tell them all of the reasons their bribes don’t work: King of the World isn’t just more trouble than it’s worth, any ruler needs to be a balance between benevolent and firm; Wisdom, victory, and glory in battle sounds meaningless if you have done nothing to earn that yourself; and the most beautiful woman in the world means nothing if you don’t truly love her for her or she truly loves you for you. If I was to choose between them, I wish to do it fairly based on what is on the inside, not just the outside. Thus, I would not accept their bribes no matter how appealing they sound.

That's actually a really interesting answer; however none would win. Aphrodite killed (or did worse) to numerous women who were proclaimed more beautiful than her. Hera rained destruction on Zeus' partners even when they didn't consent. Athena seems like the only good option, however she turned arachne into a spider just because she was better at weaving.

Remember when Fry became emporer of a planet and then he had to thwart assassination attempts. That's what would happen with choose king of the world. The amazing combatant also isn't the correct choice. He would have to fight challengers for the rest of his days from all the men that wanted the prestige of defeating this amazing combatant. It was all part of Athena's very convoluted plan to make sure that Zues got his wish of Rome being founded. Also cause she really wanted to see Aphrodite get stabbed, even if it wasn't really going to do much damage.
@blueteller

@@drizzmatec ...that's just adding lore post-canon, that doesn't count. My point is tha in the core story, where the godesses of WAR, MARRIAGE and LOVE fight over which one of them is the *prettiest* one.... you gotta admit that one of those three doesn't quite fit. Especially since Athena's whole thing is that she's a *virgin* and she isn't into anyone romantically. Also, why have a random human be the judge?? It's obvious he would be a lousy one. They should have asked Apollo or something, at least he's one of the gods whose roles include being "the god of beauty". ...I mean he'd probably just get bribed by Aphrodite too, lol. But at least it wouldn't kick off a 10-year human war.
