This is why I wish the expansion version of box set units had alternate sculpts.

Here’s a question I’d like to see Crabbok discuss.... how many people would play Legion if they sold sets/expansions that came built and repainted. I would love to play it, I play X-Wing, Armada but I am awful at painting and don’t have patience to learn. I’d love to play Legion.

I'm trying to decide just how much I want to initially buy for my Clone Army. I could concentrate on building a Battle of Geonosha themed army at the start and then build a whole new force after the Phase II clones release, but I really want to put a lot of my energies into the Phase II clones as I can from the beginning.

Considering I plan on playing clones and droids, I can’t accentuate how incredible of a value the core set is. I have 8 core units and 4 support units, and a leader for both factions. Over $400 in value and I got mine on sale on Amazon for $80 a piece. $160 for $400+ of both factions I want to play. I was able to grab 2 arc troopers and 2 B2 super battle droids, and a clone upgrade expansion, all of which were on sale on Amazon as well, and I was still under $300. I have over $565 in Star Wars legion products and I spent less than $300. This game is ridiculously affordable.

Mind that the BARC speeder expansion also has alternative Mk2 sculpts. I still fully agree that buying multiple starters is the way to go. Bought 3 original starters plus extra Speeder Bikes and ATRT for the alt sculpts and that still was the most cost efficient to get 6 of each trooper unit (plus extra dice!). The 4th Speederbike is going to an Hoth based army. Going with 2 starters this time as the upcoming troop/specialists expansions will fill out my Clonetroopers enough even for a full Mk1 army. With the Droids being more of an extra army for me there's less of an urge to have 6 full units like I had with Stormtroopers.

I’ve got a preorder for two Clone war core sets out there, splitting with a friend. He’s going droids, I’m going for clones. After that, I don’t think I’ll need to buy much - I’ll pick up the phase 1 heavy upgrade pack for more variety, and Rex. Maybe I’ll get the tank - the want is there but the finances are questioning it

If you're kitbashing your own terrain the extra barricades can come in handy for building field fortifications that incorporate them as components. I could easily see carving up a set to do a few sets of "breached defenses" terrain modules. And really, they're effectively free here. Hard to overestimate the value of free stuff.

Wow, this is totally different calculus than the armada core sets and expansions for the ships found in there. I’d be curious to know though what is unique to the expansions? Although hard to say some cards would be worth the extra $50

Any guesses as to when I might be able to find some of these core sets at my LGS?

2 cores are ideal for both sets as it gives you a decent amount to field right away and then buy 2 of each booster box so you can get cards that don't come in the core box, the card pack is nice but it isn't going to have everything from support units or troopers.

You can ALWAYS find the core sets on sale for 85.00 and sometimes as low as 79.00 at Miniature Market or Amazon. I also recommend at a minimal 3.

They should make more then 1 starter box for X-wing.

It always hurts the wallet when you first get into a Star Wars FFG game. Xwing isnt quite as painful. But once you get caught up it's not nearly as painful. I remember when I decided to pull the trigger and get started in Armada it made me sick to my stomach contemplating whether or not I should invest the kind of money I did to get started. Now I buy a ship here and there. So once that initial sting is done it becomes fun expanding your games. At least it is for me.

I think for the current spoilers buying the two sets of Core 2 is a good idea. But I'm sure downline you won't use the extra troops when they release different corps units and cooler upgrades etc to help field your army.

Me and my brother always split the core sets so this always becomes easy for me to buy

I'm only buying one and expanding as I go. If I buy more than one I'll never paint them otherwise. It'll cost more in the long run but I don't mind.

I really want to try the Legion, especially now that there are droid army, but I suck at painting and really not even sure if I want to build my own terrain. That's why I really enjoy Armada - it comes prepainted and no terrain required. Do I need to do custom terrain if I go into Legion?

3 Core Sets? Are you for real? No, that's just a terrible idea. Every duplicate loses more and more value past the 1st one. You might be able to justify a 2nd one, if you get it at a good price, but you're not getting anything new at that point and you're just going to have an excessive amount of pieces that you'll probably still need to buy the expansion for. I stopped playing X-Wing when it went into 2.0 because of how much of an investment that would be to convert over. I've played Armada since then, and have lately been eyeing Legion, but this recommendation doesn't make me want to start at all. You're recommending someone new to the game spend $300 to get in and just end up with all of the same stuff. Terrible advice.
