I had legionnaires in 2017. My work had a new air conditioning unit installed. I went to the er but was dismissed with a FOU. Fever of unknown origin at 103. I went home and for the next week was still taking care of my 90 year old mother. I tried going back to work but collapsed and was taken to the same hospital. Lucky for me an infectious disease specialist was on call and she realized it was legionnaires. I spent 7 days in the hospital but later found out one person in my my workplace had died and another was in ICU for weeks. It was horrible, I was hallucinating and so weak when I got home. I still have PTSD over this and nobody knows it exists.

Thanks Prof. Dave, thanks for the episode, I learned a bit more. I had Legionella in '92 and spend a week in ICU, it sucked. Now I make sure that I get my pneumonia vaccine when ever my GP recommends. He told me if I get pneumonia again it would probably kill me, so I'll avoid it thank you very much.

Good video on this dangerous disease. We had an outbreak in the '90's here in the Netherlands and it was a doozy.

Wasn't it a fountain? It's dangerous but requires specific circumstances. Since the incident, all Dutch plumbers know to never leave a 'wet' dead end in a water pipe. Also fire hose reels are checked and sealed

@@manuell3505 It was at the Westfriese Flora where among other things there were fountains and pools on display. 28 dead and hundreds of infected. To this day some of them are still suffering the aftereffects.

A large part of my job is testing for microbiological activity in industrial cooling towers at an oil refinery. I sent off some samples today to a lab to have the water tested for legionella.

My mother passed from legionnaires almost 3 years ago. We have not a clue how she got it. Watching my mother decline was absolutely awful. She suffered.

Hi Professor :) i don’t know if you’ll see this comment or not but i first want to thank you for the excellent work and the many lessons. There’s however a topic that i would very much like you to cover for purposes of combating sudo-science that arose recently, namely the “schumann resonance” and how it is being linked to physiological states, bad dreams and mood swings. Neither RU-vid nor Google have enough info explaining the matter scientifically so i’m hoping that you can cover it. Thanks

I remember Legionnaires' Disease in the 1970's, I would have been about 15 at the time. Can you make a follow-up video on the precautions that can be taken to prevent your building from becoming a host to Legionnaires'?

I had legionnaires disease in 2021. I spent two month in the hospital and 5 weeks of that I was in a induced coma. I laid in bed not being able to move my legs and arms and to top it off I had a trakea and couldn't talk. It was awful..

WTF? And then the video suddenly stops at the most critical point : prevention. You should at least explain about the water temperature range in which legionella can live.

Is pneumonia caused by the WBC or by the bacterium changing the environment (our lung cells) around it?
@indiabiologyexplains5013
@indiabiologyexplains5013 Год назад
I think that pneumonia is ultimately caused by inflammation and interstitial fluid leakage from WBCs

when I was in collage, we learned about how Legionnaires' Disease incubates inside water heaters that have been turned down to far, anything below 120F is not recommended. So when your mother in law says that the hot water is to hot and asks to turn it down, just dont. Or.... JK NO no no no no.
