The fact that the 42043 Arocs had basically the same number of pieces is crazy, it had like a thousand functions, it was cheaper, got pneumatic, PF, suspension, license, etc. That's why it's still my favorite after all this years. Anyways, keep the good work, hope to see more content from you
For the money they ask I expected more. There are a couple very significant places which small improvements would have huge impact, but LEGO apparently just ignored them. You caught all of them I think. Great review as always!
@@alreadytakenindeed this is what Lego is like, release set everyone and their mom wants (V22 osprey) can it immediately because it was used in wars (really!!! Your RND team is that oblivious). Then make a set everyone would like but butcher it so badly that nobody can unsee it (McLaren P1, which should have been a F1 imo).
Do bear in mind that the Technic Land Rover from 2019 would actually cost roughly the same as this G500 by today's standards with inflation accounted for. There's only a difference of a few dollars, pounds or euros in single digits. So while this G500 is expensive for sure, it's actually on par with the Land Rover set from five years ago. This doesn't look too bad, interesting inner structure and mechanics. I'm not sure if I'll go for this though; I never went for the Land Rover for some reason, despite that set's price going to half price before it retired, which I assume will happen to the G500.
I appreciate the way you brutally rate these sets, I was indecisive on whether I should the the Sian or Daytona, I ended up getting the Sian because you had more praise for it than the Daytona
2:05 The truck in the booklet has mismatched fenders! Haha. Almost bought one, but the reddish orange put me off. I'd rather have more of a color I already have.
The reason it has only a 2 speed transmission is the fact that the real G500 (2024) has a gear reduction feature called LOW and HIGH RANGE. Apart from that the gearbox is an automatic one, the driver can switch from a low setting (normal: 1.00) to a high setting (2.93) for less speed but more torque when crawling.
Too excited to see the reviews of sets 42176 (Porsche GT4 e-perfomance) and set 42172 (mclaren P1) which are just crazy in terms of new parts (especially set 42176 with its optical pipes) and in terms of looking (the P1 is magnificent)! This set is also incredible, the color is incredible, I'm hesitating which 3 sets to buy for Christmas! Best wishes from France!
One thing that this set highlights well (I've just finished building it myself) is how very little of the parts in a Technic set these days goes towards building anything technical. As soon as bag 6 is done (out of 20), nothing technical is built anymore (even the wheels have already been put on!) - the rest is all nothing but a long and tedious panelling experience. I'm going to research my sets before buying them from now on (by watching your videos or similar) because I really don't want to deal with another set where nothing but aesthetics is built up within the last 14 bags of a 20 bag set.
It seems like that A Frame does the side to side location of the axle instead of a panhard rod. Live axle Defenders used this layout on the rear axle too.
I think they probably should’ve added 1 wide panels across the bottoms of the windows and top of the bonnet, but other than that it looks good. Do you think it’s possible to motorise while keeping functions?

One thing I wish Lego started doing again is adding an ability to motorize the model. I know some models have space, so you can modded it yourself, but an official instruction would’ve been nice
5:44 - I'm not going crazy! I never look at the numbers on the pieces because I can pick them apart easily on sight - but I swear that when I was building this - with the set out on the bench in front of me - I kept looking at that piece (number 7) and thinking: "Is that even angled???"
I think Sariel spoke the truth about the wobbliness and flimsiness of the body structure of the set; more than any other reviewers out there. That amount of wobbliness bothers me. I do not think 42177 is a direct successor to 42110. The 42110 was a function oriented set aimed towards 11+ with exceptional attention to details that can equally be qualified as a display oriented/18+ set. Had that been released in 2024 would it still be labeled as an 11+ set that is another debatable matter. IMO, this set is primarily a display oriented set with an exhibition of diff locks 2-speed gearbox and Ackermann steering. It just ends there. The functional performance seems not to be the primary focus like a Defender or a Zetros or an H175 Airbus or even an Audi Q e-tron. As usual, fantastic and essential review by Sariel. Hopefully his review for P1 will be as helpful as this one.
Is anyone else concerned that Lego might be moving to replace Orange with this new Reddish Orange? They already recently replaced some of the translucent colours, and this new Reddish Orange almost seems unnecessary unless they plan to phase out another colour.
I had promised my wife that I would no longer purchase the big technic sets, then I saw this set and wanted it straight away, I think I would of preferred it if it could of been a brick built with technic Icons set.
I understand that for W464 generation V8 for G500 is no more but why did they put differential lock in the middle and rear axle but not the front axle?
Great review, I am happy that it's not black, maybe not so happy about this bloody orange, but still better than another black car catching the dust (and cat's fur / hair). And I am wondering, how these new parts will change the LugPOL Truck Trial Championship, especially the suspension... Or it won't?
i dont understand why they choose this year and not the one from the 1989 or 1999 would look a lot better with its boxy style, all i want this set for is the Unimog MoC
I've almost bought this today. Still fighting in my head about it. But thing that keeps me away the most is the engine. All G500's have V8 engine, and here they put V8 cover with straight 6 engine, slightly messed up. Plus thing you point the most, flimsy. Looks quite irritating to be honest :/ and price wise, in uk you can get it around 160 pounds now :)
Looks like a solid set, probably would pick up if I was a big fan of the technic cars. Unfortunately they're pretty ugly to my eyes with all the gaps. Also, Lego I have a bunch of pins in black, you've made them before, why can't you start making them again? These are adult sets, they don't need to have blue for easy identification.
You beat me to it, I was going to complain that they for some reason put I6 engine but then I checked that the W464 generation G500 is not V8 anymore but I6 with mild hybrid system.
@@searme I think having five studs of space between the two anchor points could become really interesting, even in small models. It might even be possible to do a (Not sure if there is an offical term for this) live axle with differential that is mounted inside a regual double wishbone setup. So I would say it should be possible to have these new pieces in a chassis that only has like one stud between the anchors. That would be quite a bit smaller than this Mercedes here, but of course without the differential lock
Considering the many disaster sets that Lego has brought out in the recent past, the Mercedes is one of the better ones. The price is of course too high for what is offered, but Lego fans are happy when they don't get a complete piece of junk for a change. You can no longer have high expectations and they have been fulfilled.
