According to the official lego page it says "Remove the roof of your creation to admire the interior columns and arches, and lift off the towers to take a closer look inside." so that is hopeful.

The Taj Mahal is also a religious building, which was also a set, not for its relifious-ness, but for the architecture. this falls under that umbrella.
@AnthonyAvon

Well, that's right. It is about architecture, not about its church...ness. I think their rule is that there will never be a City or a Friends set that is a "Church" set the way they have a "Police Station" set.

I have no problem if it turns out you have to pause the build to enjoy the historical stages. If you're into the source material, you're into the history, and to be able to replicate that history is definitely added value. After all, for the build to follow the historical stages and still look good, accurate and with correct colors mid-build is likely not the easiest build sequence they could have developed.

I looked at a designer presentation. You can easily remove the roof and the upper parts of the two towers but you can't see into it very well. The interesting part is that the build is in chronological order with information about the build included [according to the designer] which does sound really cool to me. The accuracy is also impressive. For example the buttresses are just as many as there are in real life.

I feel like it's fine to show the inside. Architecture sets typically have a hint of an interior but don't have removable tops.

Well, Lego have produced quite a few East Asian temples over the years and one could potentially argue that those were buildings of religious worship. The same could go for certain sets from Johnny Thunder and the Adventurers theme of theirs.

As a churchgoer, I think you can definitely make a distinction between an identifiable real-world church that is architecturally significant and a generic church as a playset. There's no objective place to draw the line - did anyone complain about the Taj Mahal or the Pyramids? They were both religiously inspired. How about the Collosseum? It's a beautiful building, tastefully done in Lego. I like this a lot.
@residentobi-wan3190

As to the "church" thing, Lego might consider this a historic site, the great pyramid after all is a tomb, a religous site and they already did that.

Lego is also anti violence and military, but they produced the coliseum for $500 bucks which is literally a battleground for slaves and gladiators to fight and kill each other. They’re not going for the church angle they’re going for the world famous instantly recognizable historical structure

You make good points: if Lego is going to say/imply, "It's primarily an architectural wonder" and brush aside the fact that it's a sacred building, then why not start making tank and warship sets like Cobi and say, "Well, they're just vehicles"? For my part, I'd gladly have Lego go down both those slippery slopes if it resulted in more diversity of themes and building experiences: churches, mosques, temples, tanks, bombers, subs....

They built the Taj Mahal as well which is technically a mosque. I would love the Hasan II and Blue Mosque to me made one day. I have a passion for Islamic architecture. And I have seen those plus Notre Dame in person (before it burned down). I have fond memories of a family trip to France when I was 11, and turned 12 in France on the trip. Lego did a fantastic job with Notre Dame. I had no idea what they would do. It's hard to be comfortable with the price for me only because I don't spend that kind of msrp on a single Lego set. It may be worth the price for a change, but it's still hard to see a toy or a hobby item cost over $200 regardless. I was raised frugal on hobbies and things. I definitely want to get it next year, but I may use points to help me stomach the cost more. I remember my first year as an afol shocked a Lego set coat $100, let alone 200 or even 850 lol.

It looks amazing but I'm disappointed by the lack of gargoyles. There's the little green nanofigures by the spire, but nothing beyond that. The gargoyles on the front of the building are so iconic, it really feels like something is missing. I know part of the reasons it was hard to do is the scale that the building is at. However, maybe some stickers might have helped but likely would have required some sort of new piece, which is perhaps why they didn't do it. I'm definitely going to get this set but I think I will try to make some modifications to have something where the gargoyles should be.

3:25 this is why I love Jang. Where else are you going to get a Lego reviewer persistently clowning a model for his manbun? I have no problem with the price for what you're getting but I feel like Lego has merged the Architecture line with the old Creator Expert landmarks subtheme. Like we used to get sets like Big Ben and Tower Bridge with 4000 pieces for around this price and Architecture sets were fewer than 100 pieces sometimes. Now it feels like those types of landmark sets are a part of Architecture and Icons landmarks have been supersized.

I agree, I think them showing the set partially disassembled in the listing is kinda weird. I'm not necessarily opposed to it, but I think it would've been less jarring if they had kept the parts of the build that didn't obstruct the view, but then greyed them out. Sort of like how in some of the manuals when you get to a new bag, and the picture shows the part you're about to build in full color, and the parts you've already build in grey.

The reason they have the “half-built pictures” is because you build it in the order in which the building was constructed which is pretty awesome. Im super excited about this - I went to art school before I became a Christian. It was ironically super non-christian, but you spent a ton of time studying churches and cathedrals. Now not only am I a christian but a licensed minister. Im not catholic, but this is probably as close as it will ever get to see any portion of my faith represented in lego which is my hobby. Cant wait to have this displayed on the shelf next to my church history books & commentaries.

This doesn’t seem like a violation of the no church policy to me. Or it seems like a very appropriate one time exception. Partly because this building burned down and you can’t even see it in all its glory in real life right now. Seems like a good time to appreciate the architecture of it through Lego. I commend the company on making this set.

This is incredible to see in Lego form. Definitely would consider buying if I had a proper place to display it. It seems like every year, they slowly walk back on their rules that they have been so strict about in past years. With the new 18+ branding, they have changed their target demographics. I expect within the next 5 or 10 years, we receive a licensed set likely from Ideas that’s based on an R-rated movie or MA-rated show. Within the next 25-50 years, I see them producing historical military-based sets.

I believe, looking at the back of the box, that those partially assembled pictures represent how historically the cathedral was constructed, and each step will be somehow tackled with informations in the instructions, but I might be wrong. It looks to me like that's the case, rather than partial disassemble. That being said, it would be better if it was explained somehow, tho I get that pictures lack any descriptions due to being intended for international audience. It is very confusing tho, regardless of what it was meant to show. Also, Notre Dame lacks any sort of religious images, so I assume that's why they've picked it. So I wouldn't be surprised if they did other religious buildings as long as they don't show any religious symbols. But that's just my assumption about things. Lego's rules operate more like suggestions than guidelines it seems anyways, and every once in a while they do seems to like to experiment what they can do without incurring backlash. Their experiments sometimes are for better, sometimes for worse, and sometimes for weird.
