LEGO City Changes! Angled Canal & Modulars Moved!

I just WAS NOT HAPPY with the front 2 blocks of the LEGO city... sooo it was time to move some modular buildings! In order to get the look that I wanted I had to move the entrance to the canal over a plate and to line it back up I made an angled section! I think it looks much better! There are still some other things that need to be addressed such as the train bridge, road plates, and a vehicle bridge.

My only suggestion is you wouldn’t find a hospital on the water front. Maybe swap it out with a restaurant or shop instead which is what usually attracts people to the ocean.

Think vegetation along the angled section of canal would cover a lot of the problems with it. The canals by me have areas that allow wildlife to use. Also you could have an area for gondolas to park up in the awkward space

I like the pedestrian bridge over the canal. In Spokane we have several and call them skywalks, a name created pre-Star Wars. The university might work better if you ever decide to create a college campus. But I agree with you that it looks a bit awkward in the city center. On the edge of town you could create more of a campus with green space.

Idea for your canal angle. Brown plates attached to the bottom of the angled wall and overhanging the water. A few brown cylinders, and boom...an old wooden dock. And it covers those spaces left between the plates on the edges. Plus you could make a gondola to tie up to the dock.
@PleegWat

A small dock in the triangle would work, but I don't think there's enough room on the diagonal side right now. The narrowest part of the diagonal is currently 11 studs, where the rest of the canal is 16. Depending on how the bridge ends up working it may be possible to create more space though.

if you do decide to go with the second bridge (road or pedestrian), I'd suggest widening the canal for the angled section (it looks too narrow, even if it isn't really) and then having a double arch bridge with a supporting section in the mid-canal. That would give it a distinct look.
@OrSomeBricks

Great progress on the city 😊. Have you considered raising the city centre area on 2” insulation foam? This would give you greater elevation of the buildings & roads above the sea / canal level. It would also save your trains struggling up that gradient. This would be expensive but a lot cheaper than doing it in Lego bricks! Thanks for all the great content.

It’s great you’re experimenting with positioning things in different places. I can’t help thinking that if you intend to have a waterfall off the mountain into the canal, having the canal come straight out from there to the edge of the table would have a really nice view. But you’d need to remove the park a city hall. Then both sides of the canal with raised walkways would look amazing. Pedestrian bridges crossing between.

Really like how the city is looking. With the curved train track, you could extend the cove back and integrate the train track into it to break it up from the bridge. You could even add a dock with stairs down to it with some benches and planters surrounding it on the angled bit of the canal.

Living in Florida with many canals, sometimes they go under ground when they get closer to the sea. You could consider making the canal go to a pipe near the open water so you don’t need the bridge by the train.

I really like your city. And that you have a better viewing angle on the pet-shop. But after the rearanged layout the overway connecting between buildings is blocking the view down the city a bit. Maybe placing it a little further back down the canal or place just on side one plate back and making the over head walk-way going with an angle will help the viewing lines in the city. Maybe even try how the petrol station looks on the end corner. It will give that space a little bit more room. The hospital could then go one plate back and the lantern festival could be implemented with the angled part of the canal. That would be very nice to look at from the front looking down the canal. And i like the idea of less roads more open space it gives the buildings more room to breath and shine and help the viewing lines. Keep up the good work and remember it's your vision your city. What ever you do youre happy with do that!

The changes have created a lot of work with the canal bridge, as you mentioned. In your position, I would be doing whatever I could to avoid such a rebuild, but it's your city. I also like the idea of being able to retain the ambulance pull-through rather than making it just a pull-in, in the interest of realism. I also like the idea of removing the university from that area entirely, whether for relocation or parting out entirely... that might give you the space to rearrange things to avoid rebuilding the canal bridge. I'm looking forward to seeing whatever you come up with. 🙂 Edit: And after seeing the start of the rebuild in the second half of the video, I think you've made a good change there with how the corner baseplate transfers nicely to the far corner. I agree that the 6x6 angled plates don't look as good as other options might, but I'm all for building with what you have. I like the idea of taking out the second crossing and the connecting road plates for more buildings... and if you are also moving or eliminating the university building, that gives you all kinds of space and options for what to put in there instead.

Just remove the farmers market and slide the triangle boardwalk to its place. And if you really want to keep the farmers market there you can modify the triangle boardwalk to bear like half of the farmers market and place the rest of it on the other plates in that green area. The canal is too narrow rn as it is right there, the angle of it also causes problems for the bridge. This way you can have a straight canal under the bridge.

For the canal angle. If you removed the lower dark blueish gray layer only for that section to extend your water tiles by 1 stud more inside the wall instead, the light gray tiles could simply lay over them partially with the angle. There would be no apparent gaps at all, and I don't think anyone would realize the dark layer is missing given it is only 1 plate high just at the level of the water. Also, by removing the dark layer for that section, you would be able to place tiles to fill the triangle gaps between the 6x6 plates.

I think you could build an underground (under the table) subway system with a network of subway stops entry points at ground level. Cut the table in select spots, adjust the MILS plate to have a dedicated opening to access the subway platforms under the table. Attach and suspend the subway tunnels to the bottom of the table using train track and other building methods. Part of the empty space in the center could also be a Lego construction site for "expanding the subway system." Tell a "Big Dig" story.

In regards to the University, if you still want one in your city but want a new look then a great design I found was by Togeltown on ReBrickable called Brick Univerity. It is 32x48 so it would fill up the same space and it's modular in itself as the 16x32 section is reversible. I think it would look great in your city. Also I vote 1 bridge, leaves more space for modulars. I think you could place all the park style pieces next to each other and make a courtyard for the University or even just a small park.

I really enjoy the creativity and attention to detail you've put into your city build! One idea that might enhance the overall flow is adjusting the train track's placement. Moving it back a bit to align with the rest of the track near the zoo could open up the front of the city. This would allow you to bring some buildings closer to the front, making the inner city feel more dynamic with the train moving through it rather than just around the edge. Plus, it could help better integrate the promenade/boardwalk with the road. Just a thought-keep up the great work!

Super good idea. I 100% agree that you should consider not having a road going over the canal there and removing those roads instead. There's already an abundance of roads, and realistically I don't think a city would decide to build a 2nd bridge when theres already one very close nearby. Further up the canal of course it would make sense to have a 2nd

Something I noticed in your scan of the city today ... you have a corner Gas Station that has an access issue (in my opinion). Since the pull-up to the gas pumps is diagonal, leaving that gas pump requires a very sharp turn in order to re-connect to the road. And, entering the gas station from the other direction requires a very sharp u-turn in order to approach the gas pumps. Just a thought.

Printing Lego might be a option for you, Bricksie, but only very selected ones. Think of lighting up your city. The wires need to go somewhere, right? What if you can use printed lego that have room for said power lines, in them? Or a proper support plate on legs, that uses a modular building click system to add a top layer too it? It all depends on the perspective. Like say your Lego branded storage boxes? What if you can print a adapter plate for them, that actually looks them down nicely on a baseplate? And what about your table edges? Or the standing holes? This might let you print screw on holders on which you can actually mount standaard lego pieces. Might thus let you put a small corridor of gardens on the edge of one standing hole (channel edge) and thus even show off some underground construction as well. Just think, what if you can print a holder that fits under-need a baseplate, using the studs their undersides, for locking pins, on the corner sections? invest in jumper plates and castle angled bricks, rotate Ninjago City by 45 degrees, that way you can put in some not 90 degree lines. Get a boat elevator or lock system, created, for getting the boats from the channel, into Ninjago City and back again.

you should try to 3d print some supports for your huge mountains to reduce lego pieces needed for the under side. I bet you could figure out the demensions and make something to take up the big gaps under them. Just a thought

Love the city! Love the vision! I’ve posted a few times in support of your awsome ideas, I’ve never had an idea.. you can take it or leave it mate ;). The bottom left of the canal base plate, in ‘aid’ of breaking up any blockyness Lego gravitates towards.. why not a little sandy bank 6x6 ish studs where the waters low… also this is somewhat controversial but add some trash, we call it litter in the uk. Break up the right angles, tell some stories and cities are dirty… make sure you buy some mini figs recycling it. Could be a cool ‘detail’ and fun 👍👍 thanks… love the vids 👍👍

Some unsolicited thoughts I had, for the farmers market area, if you want some more green space, you could transition the road similar to how you did it by the zoo into a dirt road for parking for the farmers market and then put like a food truck or truck and trailer with produce that the vendors may have used to transport their goods For the angle in the canal, you could turn that corner by the raised walk way into a bit of a dirt build up area because as water flows there it would make sense that a lot of the dirt deposit might get left in that corner as the water slows down to be funneled out of the smaller section. Then you could have a little scene of people fishing in the canal on that little bit of a dirt patch that would likely have barely any vegetation or weeds if anything! It will also help pull your eye away from the angled bit which I think looks great, but you seemed to be a bit less enthusiastic about compared to everything else lol Like I said it’s unsolicited and I always love what you come up with, but I know the decision fatigue can be real when making so many decisions in a single video!

The city its very beautiful but you could make it more realistic with some parkin spaces and lights for cars to park, like in front of the hospital with a entrance for the ambulance. Would be very cool.

I think the canal needs a lot more depth, canals aren’t just flat water, a 1 or 2 stud difference in height within the water is needed.

Lol and here I was thinking it would be interesting to 3d print a few lego bricks just to test how well the printer would make them, just as an experiment. The angle is interesting, like someone else said, some vegetation would probably look good, vines or something.

Bricksie, could you locate the University close to the zoo? Most people have to "go off" to University so it not being located right in the city would fit. You could also have a "science" area near the zoo.
