Why don't you do it without baseplates? I think I would do my city only with baseplates where I need to build something, an empty landscape, roads and places where there are curved rails can all be done with paper or carpets instead of plates.

Good Morning Robin Hood, Why do you prefer the 4x2 tile ballast instead of the 4x1 tile in the center. Not to sure which one to go for as both look great.
@RobinHoodBricks
@RobinHoodBricks 4 года назад
1x4 tiles need to have a level bed in the middle which uses a LOT more parts. It therefore needs to be raised another plate above the baseplate which I think is ugly. Also my technique has a lot more depth between sleepers. I think that thin sleepers look less realistic as they are too narrow. Each to their own though. I'm really happy with my method and it cost enough as it was already!
@sambeaumont395
@sambeaumont395 3 года назад
This is really awesome, curious to know what method you used to work out where the studs fit the corner pieces. I think the road ramp is still too short, most track crossings at least around me have the road at track height.
@RobinHoodBricks

The method I used was perseverance. The template is on my Community page if you need it. The 6x8 ramp pieces are worth the raised rails I think!

Having recently reentered the world of lego through my sons i came across your channel while looking how to solve this exact issue. Brilliant channel and videos by the way. I do have a question the 32x32 stud base plates you have used in your two track setup are these thinner than the usual 10x4 etc plates? my memory could be wrong as its been a few years but i thought they were the same thickness. thanks
@RobinHoodBricks
@RobinHoodBricks 3 года назад
You're welcome. Baseplates have always been thinner and can't have things attached to the underside. They go up to 48x48. Plates are thicker and go up to 16x16 and would end up more expensive for the same area. The brand new road system is based on plates and is causing a lot of people issues as isn't at the same level as older baseplates. Corner template for the ballast is on my Community tab!

What about the beginning of a new year makes people reminisce and reflect on how things started..? 🤔 It's so odd to actually see the table under the train tracks - especially in this corner of your room... Anyway, I will definitely come back to this video when I am ready to figure out how to get my train tracks into my roads for the tram. 😅 Knowing where the curves line up with the studs of the base plate below will be very helpful for covering it all up.

I haven't done a normal switch in my city so I don't have a template. I did do a continuous curve switch so you could check that video out but it might not help. Essentially it's similar to a corner but with nothing at all under the big smooth flat area of the switch. Then the straight parts are done normally. To be honest it'll be held firmly at either end by the straight ends so maybe just use tiles!

I really like this!! But I have all the pieces for my RR ties using 1x4 & 1x1 tiles. Can I not “double up for the 2x4 tile look or are there not studs for them to hang onto? *edit. Watching this for the 6th time I think I understand :) To use the 1x4 “sleepers” singularly in a 1x4 fashion requires a different build, however I believe there is no reason I can’t double up my 1x4 sleepers to use what I already have? They are decorative wood grain prints, so I really want to use them…and I actually like the 2x4 look better…but I will need more!
