I'm in my forty's now and when I was little, I had alot of the Space sets (79-85). I gave them all away to cousins and nephews over the years (now wishing I had held onto them). Back in the 90's my dad picked up this set at a flea market (I think he was going to give it to one of his grandsons, but never did). Well, my Dad passed away a few years ago, and recently, when I started getting back into Lego, I pulled this set out of a shed and tried to assemble it....unfortunately it was missing about 75 pieces, or so. But it brought back a flood of memories of my childhood Lego adventures. What I really miss from these old sets is the alternate build photos on the back of the box. I wish the new sets (from ANY line) would still have those alternate build pictures on the back of the boxes. Thanks for the review!!
My parents (I mean, Santa) gave me this set back in 1986. They must have exceeded the allocated budget for toys, since it was quite expensive at the time. Well spent though, it was the most memorable toy I ever owned, and gave me countless hours of joy running exploration missions around the house garden. The car might not be very elaborate, but it was the cherry on top!
I completely understand the smile on your face. I received this set as a present back when I was 10. Even after the "cooler," newer sets--Futuron, Blacktron, etc.--came out, this remained a favorite. Digging through my parents basement a few weeks ago, I re-discovered it, mostly in tact, and the smile came right back. My obsession with it has begun again.
This was one of my absolute favorite sets growing up. I only got one so large for my birthday because it had been returned to the store and was on clearance for open-box, however it ended up missing only one common piece I was able to replace from my existing collection. I totally did use the large internal space for additional small object builds and to haul "cargo" back from missions to far planets! I played with and rebuilt this one at least 3 separate times over the years, going back to it as I aged into teenage years and the draw of computers vs Lego lessened my build time. The only other set I wanted more and never could get was the monorail with the same era blue-yellow transparent space theme. It was just always too expensive. I actually just pulled this set (still assembled) out of the storage boxes to pass onto my 5yr old son last month who's now transitioning to small Lego pieces and complex sets. He's already adorned the outside with a few extra engines/widgets to make it his own style.
Had this set when I was a kid. My dad brought it to me when he was in a business trip to Germany. Don't know where he bought it from, since some parts were missing (like the cool white pipes above and more) but with the help of my dad and bigger brother we improvised and got it built just fine. Played hours and hours with it. The white minifig was the commander, the red was the pilot... Didn't realize until now that the tool box can be attached to the car. Thinking of buying it again, my kids will love it. Thanks man for this video!!
Keep bringing back the old sets for reviews Jang you are definitely helping us older Lego fans relive a lot of memories. :). I am 38 so theses sets are always great to see.
Just gave this as well as a mostly(?) complete set of the black space invaders to my kids. Now they have a bunch of "new" bricks to play with. I think all told the space ships lasted an hour before being (gradually for some and immediately for others) taken apart. Thank you for the video! Makes it nice to remember what the thing looked like!
I actually had this set; it's the oldest set I have a clear memory of owning, and the first big set I got as a gift. I actually owned it for a while before I realized it was a set to be assembled, as I was still used to the idea that Lego was a bucket of random parts that you put stuff together out of. Then I looked at the instructions, and realized I could make a set out of it. Wish I still owned it but it got disassembled and the parts got lost over the years. I still have some of the transparent windows though and those weird wedge pieces. On eBay this set goes for about $200 used (which is probably reasonably priced allowing for inflation, based on what it originally sold for). Well over double that unopened.
Had this one growing up and passed down to nephews now. Destroyed many times when the back used to fall off and shatter but absolutely beautiful design from any angle

Now look what you have done Jang. With this particular model, which happens to be one I always wanted to have when I was a child, you got me back into buying lego stuff. I just bought it for ca. 50$ (which I consider an extremely good deal for this model). Heheh, of course it was my own decision, but nevertheless, thanks for motivating me.
Back in 2015 I found a sealed version of this in my grandparents basement and they let me have it. I built it and it was so cool, but I was 7 back then. So if I didn't display a set it would break quickly, and sure enough it broke. I hadn't realized how valuable this was. If I got it now, I would treasure it and display it. Maybe I'll search my bins and find the parts. I regret letting this break. . .
One of the favorites in my childhood. Sadly I discovered a lot of parts missing on mine today. It was disassembled and kept in a box with lots of others in the attic.
Pretty big ship! Good detail and colors on the outside. They didn't go overly crazy on random parts sticking all over the place. Seems to be quite a lot of space inside, mostly empty from looks of it. Possibly to transport a lot of items? It might have been nice to have a few mini-builds, with this set, to help give some additional ideas on what you could do with the interior.
Hey Jang, Great video, as usual! The concept of "illegal connections" intrigues me. You mentioned how a connection wasn't completely "legal" at 6:30. I would appreciate a video in which you discuss the Lego "system" (as well as the company's obsession with system in the first place, maybe bring in Lord Business? ;) ) and its implications. Does the concept of "illegal" and "legal" connects limit creativity? It would be interesting to see your take on this topic.
I was born in the early 1970s and I remember fondly the very first space Lego. This, although it appeared in the 80s is still a worthy contender. I’m hoping that Lego will revive the space theme. I mean just the space theme and not some of the crazy alien theme, or space squad theme or anything like that. I wonder if the 4 coloured Lego astronauts they released recently with Lego Benny was Lego testing the water...?
Hey Jang, after seeing your restoring lego video I have had a tidy up of my set of this and I have replaced 70 or so bricks and the 2 front wind screens, I thing is a cool set, love the review,
the very front of the ship needs a 1x3 slanted block on both sides, to improve the flow before you hit the yellow translucent canopy section (too square in the front)
This set is from before my time but seeing it I suddenly am reminded of one that I did once have: M:Tron 6956 Stellar Recon Voyager The similar shape and name arrangement of similar pieces now pretty obvious that the SRV is an homage to this older set. Pretty cool to see its ancestor. Looks like M-Tron era wasn't your style tho, very few reviews... Maybe you should pick up a 6956 someday and see a side-by-side
Well, I personally like the older bases better than this one (but don't get me wrong - it IS a fantastic set). Thank you for spending the money and time to bring back those things!! You have become my favourite LEGO reviewer out there! As a person born in 1984 "my" era of LEGO space is of course the Blacktron/Ice Planet/Space Police - era. Too bad that you are not particularly interested in them - I'd really enjoy you reviewing them - but never mind, keep on the great work!!
when I saw that you had this ship I could not wait to se you review it. I've never owned a classic set but I rebuilt most of them in LDD and this was the first one I made in LDD as well as my favorite classic ship.
Never got this as a kid, I remember I didn't like Lego using white instead of grey. Now however I agree this is a great set, and of course regret not getting it.
When I was young I would get my GI Joes and basically turn them into Starfleet officers. As I look at these guys all I keep thinking is: Red=COMMAND; Blue=SCIENCE; White=Medical; Black=ENGINEERING; Yellow=Operations. ENGAGE! :)
Maybe the most beautiful Leog Space set from that era - I'm also more into the greyisch ones, but this was/is designed and shaped masterfully - also the range of mini figs is awesome - much blue in the set, so it's good to not include a blue fig here.
This is one of my favourite lego sets, I still have it from when it was bought back around the release back in 1986.. It's so awesome! :D Gonna check if you also have the pirate ship that I had.. I love these videos! :D Makes it possible to look at the models without building it together.. cause it takes up so much space :P

I like the passion when you talk about the sets even. I was looking for in your channel some Blacktron or Aquazone videos *I found some Aquanauts reviews but none of the other). I remember looking the catalogues and not liking this space line, but loving the rest. Until Blacktron came and further lines.
Amazing set... And yet - groan,,, Now I have to scavenge through pick-a-brick and brick-link to buy the parts for this beautiful thing!!! Just getting together all the parts for 6980 Galaxy Commander took about three days and many compromises!!! I'll need at least one more, colossally expensive (£10+) round landing pad base plates for her also... My own diorama is already a little over-subscribed!!! After that there only remains one more classic space capital ship: '6984 - Mission Commander' to assemble. THAT individual is going to be really time consuming and expensive.
I really do like that you like used figs that's kinda cool. Also the ship looks really cool, if thay made it still I'd buy like 10 and make a mother ship lol.
