Honestly, it’s a little exhausting to get teased a theme or set I’d be interested in only to be thrown some $300 investment that would occupy an entire piece of furniture in my apartment. I wish Lego would do more in the $50 range for adult oriented sets.
Supposedly there’s gonna be a CMF series later this year but I do hope they’d do some more builds, especially if they make it the quality of some of the side builds in this where they’re not necessarily for play but look really nice
Check out the lego icons Kingfisher. If youre into nature or just want a great looking $50 set its an amazing option, favorite set ive ever built, beating out a lot of more expensive sets.
Man, if I didn't already have a bunch of medieval sets, I would consider this the best set ever. But I already have a castle, and a dragon, and an inn. So it's a bunch of stuff I already have all beautifully integrated together.
My favorite part about the Minifigs (though correct me if I’m wrong) is that all of them have gloves and no skin-colored printing on their torso necklines, so you can swap the heads between figures as you please. Really neat and perfect for D&D character creation. I wish more sets did that, too!
Yeah! I got a chance to talk with designers about that, and that was very much intentional. They wanted you to be able to put pretty much any head on any minifigure and go crazy with the customization! I sure hope we see that in more sets too.
That’s great! It’s one of the most annoying things to me about building custom figs - you find the perfect torso but there’s a little triangle of the wrong skin color at the top, when they could easily have just left it out in many cases 😖!
Speaking of D&D minifigures I was expecting a Barbarian, a Paladin or even a Ranger to be among the main crew of characters... Oh well I'll just make some using some already existing torso and leg pieces from Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit and some Castle sets
@The_Blue_Otaku fighter and barbarian are kind of interchangeable, at least ascetic wise. same goes for clerics and paladins but to a lesser degree. Ranger would have been great especially since it'd probably include an animal figure but who knows they might be saving that for later
I would love to see a D&D set at a price point that isn’t half my paycheck. A $50 dice tower would be a must buy for me. It would also be nice to see them really dig into the idea of using mini figures to play the actually game.
May I play dungeons and dragons with my kids all the time. In fact we use Lego mini figures as characters. I have solo many extra body’s and stuff that my kids make their own characters for the campaign. They just made it up as we go.
Do you know the castle three and one that has been out for a couple of years you could probably find it at a store discounted or even at a store discounted not much but enough to take it home. I bought it when it came out we put it together and we use it for campaign all the time.
I think "one dungeon room, one brick built monster, two Player Characters, a little treasure" would be good for a midrange set...the kind I'm still used to thinking as $10 but let's be real here, that'd be like $20-30 nowadays. Or one player character and several minifigure scale monsters in some sets, like a handful of orcs or skeletons.
Why can’t we just bring back a castle theme? I’m tired of all the castle related things being locked behind a $300 pay wall. I just like to have a good castle and pirate theme again. I’m so tired of all the licensed stuff.
This doesn’t solve the $300+ problem you’re talking about (yes I agree), but at least as licensed set, this is the easiest to ‘remove’ the license aspect. Just remove all the sidebuilds and minfigs and it’s just a castle set. Also as a celebration of DnD, this feels more of a genuine passion license than ‘quick we need to make Avatar toys! Quick, Minions is coming out! What’s the next thing? Gabby? Whats that? Who cares! Make it! Money Money Money’ THAT is the licensing mentality that needs to end immediately. One off licensed sets that come off with some genuine celebration and passion for the ip are a lot more tolerable, as it is more of a collectable rather than just straight merchandise! Also yes just bring back pirates and such.
arguably, DnD is the least licensed theme we can get without it being unlicensed since DnD is all about story building and creating your own narratives, but I get the appeal of just wanting a medieval theme with less fantasy elements.
@@metroid767 to be fair, mostly every licensed set is "quick this is coming out!" even lego star wars came out because phantom menace was in theaters. dnd does seem unique as there isn't anything that big coming out to co-incide with the lego set. that's just how companies operate, they couldn't put out a line of sets based on 1980's comedy hit "airplane", because it came out 40 years ago. recency is how most companies make money.
What annoys me about this set is that it could have been a great line with a Tavern set, a battle in the forest set, the gelatinous dungeon set, the tower set and the dragon set all at different price points and inculding figures to build up your party! Instead we're forced to buy a giant 360 dollar set if you want to have any of it. I really don't like the direction Lego has gone lately with making 1 off giant sets aimed at adults instead of a whole line of smaller sets like they do for standard themes
And a mimic set. We already got the chest and the bed, which is awesome, but they could have really gone crazy with it! Chair? Mimic. Shelf? Mimic. Pile of weapons? All actually mimics.
Indeed. This would have made for such a good theme of modular expansions that you can pick and choose from. At least we have the CMF line to look forward to later this year.
Love the colors, visual power, adventurers, and brick built monsters. That Dragon may be the best ever. However, that price seems a bit steep for how hollow it is. (Hasbro has their hands in this.) The tower isn't even fully built up. And only 6 proper figs for $360 is ridiculous. Skeletons are a cop out. No minifig monsters; not even a Lich or some goblins? Shouldn't have to buy into the CMF series to properly fill this set up.
Something that hasn't been talked about very much is the spectacular balance of colors. The red dragon, grey castles, beige rocks, blue and purple roofs, and green grass is amazing. Additionally, things like the gold/blue flags, bright blue shore flowers, and various creatures inject even more color. There is such a beautifully varied color palette here.
I really wish the set could’ve gave us some dice that could’ve made the whole thing even better or some character sheets inside of the instruction booklet
"Campaign developed with Wizards of the Coast - Download and play your way through a campaign specially designed in collaboration with the world-renowned Wizards of the Coast" it might not come with dice but i assume that means character sheets would be a thing too
There'll be a digital download with the character sheets, yeah! I bet one of the other early reviewers might have covered that aspect of the set in more detail
It's great that you got this review out so early. It's too bad they missed the opportunity to scatter even more weapon and armor upgrades all over the place, that would be awesome. Speaking of the dragon from Gringott's, I'd love to see someone build an alternate of that set into a D&D build.
Some more armor definitely would have been really cool. I'm surprised they didn't do that! I'm excited to see what the D&D CMF line will have later this year though...
I wish these had been split up into seperate sets for the enemies and tower/tavern. I feel it would have been a great step into d&d as a full series to let players mix and match as they see fit. (mind, I just want the dragon so...)
I’m an enormous D&D fan and this set is absolutely stunning. Every little detail just makes me smile. I fully intend on getting this since I actually use Lego minifigs as game minis
Even though this set could get a bit dicey, I want to pick it up, take it gnome to build, and try to play the adventure with my kids. Owlbearly be able to keep all the secrets and mysteries under wraps, but will let you know how it went after we're dungeon... Sorry to keep dragon out these comments, but let me know elf you agree that this mage be the most exciting LEGO castle/fantasy set a cleric could ever lay hands upon.
I absolutely love this comment Find it so fun. Too bad I can’t come up with something smart and quirky on the spot! Lich you know if I do come up with something
That's probably the single best thing about this set - just how much STUFF there is in it! You'll be able to have some insane adventures in this model, and I'm sure it could keep an actual D&D campaign entertained for days.
Thanks for making a shorter review of this set! I can’t exactly watch an hour long review on my break at work, but this video is the perfect size for the time I have right now. While this set is definitely out of my budget, I’m definitely gonna have to pick up some of the minifigures here like the dragon guy at the very least. I love that the minifigure torsos & legs don’t have any skin tone showing so you can mix & match the parts to make a dragon rogue or an elf cleric. This is a really great set & definitely worth the hefty price tag. Thanks for the review.
Really glad you enjoyed - thank you! The figures are spectacular, and I'm really glad that LEGO has been listening to feedback about skin tones on the torsos.
Back when I submitted ideas onto LEGO Ideas I tried these concepts based on Star Wars: The Old Republic where you could receive a random figure design to represent the player character, inspired by the game's character customization. While those ideas never went anywhere, I'm glad that something similar has appeared in this set! And I'd certainly like to see something similar in the future!
I’m a huge D&D fan, but this set just doesn’t resonate with me. It just feels a little generic fantasy, IMO. The only thing that feels like right to me is the iconic monsters, and a few of the potions lying around the place. I wish they either made a bit more of a cohesive story (Throw in a little adventure module with it, written by WOTC. They did it for Nerds candy!), or just made an iconic set piece from an existing module. Currently, it just feels like a waste of the D&D IP. Build rocks though
Looks like the dungeon section houses a few extra monsters. The mushroom guys are Myconid, the black lumps shown at 11:00 are probably supppsed to be Black Pudding (notoriously they divide into smaller ooze monsters when they take slashing or lightning damage), and the pink plant is probably supposed to be Violet Fungus! combined with the Mimics and the Gelatenous Cube, you have all the staples of the classic dungeon ecology, it just needs a Grick or a Rust Monster to round it out!
Gotta say I'm a little disappointed by the lack of play features and details. Especially for the dragon. The lack of articulation makes it look unthreatening when he's supposed to be wrapping around the tower. He comes off like he's just standing there waiting for his friends to visit.
@@denysvision That doesn't make any sense. You can still have poseability, otherwise it would be an immovable statue. Also that was besides my point. The dragon needed more articulation because it looks bad displayed on the tower as all it can do is stand there. It can't look imposing and it only looks good when it's separated from the tower, which missed the point of the whole premise of this set.
This feels like it could be 6-7 separate more affordable sets… Maybe even more if we make each room a set with 1 character. 1 set for each big monster Then the forest with a little monster and another minifig And so on… Looks so good. I wish I could buy some part of it.
Well as a D&D player and Lego fan, I'm really happy to see a set like this one. It's just a bit sad for the price to be that overkill ... But really, awesome set ! And nice video, keep going !
DnD would work really well as a set of four at various levels, rather than trying to cram it all into one big set. Follow the same four characters with different minifigs in each set (representing the new magic items they got), and start with a small set that's maybe a goblin or kobold raid for levels 1-4, go up to a larger set with Mind Flayers or a vampire attack on a tavern for the level 5-10, a bigger set still featuring a Beholder for 11-15, and then you throw out the Ancient Dragon for a big, several-hundred-dollar centerpiece set.
I absolutely love the fact that every PC has a second face! such a nice addition for multiple faces in multiple skin tones loved putting together the tree man and the beholder
My brother and I use to play advanced dungeons & dragons back in the early nineties with lego figures and white grid board plus coloured chalk. Amazing to see this.😂
What we really need for this theme is some Dungeon kits! Have sections of dungeon you can change around and use to actually play a game of d and d with hero character mini figs and some monsters.
Oh my these figures are beautiful and how is nobody talking about that 2 sided cape we haven’t seen one of those in a minute. And this set really gives me that terraria type vibes or a souls game love it
This looks like a $300 set at best. Ninjago City subtheme is similar to price/size but comes with a TON of minifigs. This set has 6, same as $30 SW battlepacks. They could have added minifig parts to enable customizing the hero party or just enemy units in general.
Looking at this set from the perspective of a DM (at least what you’ve shown of it), I think the people who translated it from the original idea to the final set couldn’t have done a better job. Even things that were probably unintentional, like the lack of detailing on the bridge, is exactly the kind of things that would happen in my games, where i would describe something in immaculate detail and completely forgo describing the thing right next to it. The build itself also has the same vibe as a lot of the dungeons i’ve ran, where parts of it seem completely intact and well maintained while other parts feel like the ruins of structures that were already ancient and decaying when they were built.
That's really cool, honestly! It 100% was designed by D&D fans for D&D. I got to speak with a few of the designers involved in the project, and you could clearly see the passion.
Okay so I don't know if the other minifigs are characters introduced in art before, (The dwarf cleric definitely isn't the one depicted in the PHB unless he got new clothes and armor) but that dragonborn bard immediately reminded me of the Bard monster statblock in Monsters of The Multiverse, which really looks like it could be the same person
This set looks wonderful but I just can't justify getting it. It's 2 weeks of pay as a college student and I don't even have space for the giant wonderful monstrosity. I'd kill to just get one section as its own set.
Honestly, for 300$, i'd rather have a full size tavern that's properly detailed, or a larger section of the castle or forest, with the ability to merge the seperate sets into a more detailed version of this. It just seems a little too janky and disorderly for a set with a more adult price range.
I don't get it, so on the lego website it said set will be available April 4th, today's April 4th I go into the website and it says out of stock need to backorder it which will take 60 days....🤦 also guess I'm missing out on getting that exclusive lego mimic chest from purchasing this set
This is a nice set for the Dnd theme. But I hope it will be the only big classic Lego set. I had hoped for a type of dungeon builder set with plates that lock in (like this built but simpler). Where you can create your own dungeons, swap out stuff, add different enemies, loot, traps… The face swapping is a great thing that works for the theme. But a dungeon builder would have been great. Also just an easy thing to expand on with extra sets. Could easily make a character creator set as well to go along with it with the different races and classes. Doubt they’ll do it. Kinda set this is all we’ve gotten right now. Seems like the two brands mix so well with creativity being so important for both. Hope we’ll see more at a more reasonable price.
Be so good if they made buildable D&D game sets, like rooms you can buy and adapt. Could just do them myself but would be nice to get everything in a little box, having players make their own mini fig and win loot in a game to add to it would be so fun too.
Holy crap, this thing's *massive.* I think my favorite part is the purple tentacle blob cyclops monster thing (idk what it's called, I'm not much of a D&D person) 1:17 They're called Beholders. I think the OwlBears are kind of neat, too. So are the Displacer beats, and I've seen Mimics all over the internet without knowing where they're from. You know what? I might look into Dungeons & Dragons lore, it seems interesting! 😅
Really excited to get this. Have so many great memories surrounding D&D. My go-to class is Rogue and that Orc is definitely my favorite figure of the set
Can the dragon sit above the bridge like it shows in lego's images? That honestly may be a make or break for me. I don't have room to display the dragon separately, or very flimsily balancing it on the bridge
I think, especially since it's in collaboration with one of Lego's chief rivals (Hasbro, who owns Wizards of the Coast), they weren't willing to commit to a full theme, and instead leaned on the Ideas submission as a one-time collector's piece. What I think they succeeded at was capturing both the spirit of the game and the core of Lego by making the figures fully customizable. And the play features they sacrificed are being replaced by a full playable D&D campaign based on the set. I think they felt like they couldn't skimp on details-- because let's face it; D&D fans are all about details-- but wanted to make it playable as well for that same audience. I don't play D&D and I probably won't get this set, but I love fantasy and Lego Castle so I will probably look for these pieces and accessories on PaB
Seeing this set makes me wish Lego would come out with a Fallout set that went along with the TV series that's coming out next month. There’s a lot of RP and D&D elements in that as well.
@piotr78 I agree it is sad that Lego isn't interested in going to unlicensed themes like Pirates or Castle or even an action theme like Adventurers. Unfortunately, licensed themes are seemingly all that we are going to get for the time being.
@@CheeseyStudios the dark green dragon looming and curling menacingly from the tower was probably the big one. Instead they just made a detachable generic and bland standalone red dragon that looks a toy or action figure. Then there are other smaller changes like the observer in the original was fit into a dark room looking down which was cool, they instead redesigned the observer look entirely and made the observer its own separate model on a standalone stand instead. The back is completely open not integrated like the original into like a partial cave like structural layout. The original minifigures and island layout and color designs were just so much more asthetically pleasing. There’s more nitpicks but all to top of the outrageous price of $360 which is just insane :(
I like that the set isn’t particularly a display set or a play set. In DnD a lot of the movement/actions have to be imagined, and using a map like this is usually just a guide for the players to use their imagination. I think it fits well with the theme:) I’m so excited to get this set in april!
Love this set so much! Great review, Cheesey! ♡ Really looking forward to this one, my wallet is not. I like how they have weapons, tools, potions, etc. laid around for the adventurers to find and loot! That beholder shield is so cool! As awesome as these giant sets are, I also wish Lego would make some smaller sets with the D&D theme.. I would’ve loved to have gotten an $80-100 more fleshed out tavern on its own, or smaller dungeons or ruins to explore. I’m lucky enough to have half a room to display Lego and I really have next to no space left. 😂
I know the price for this set is definitely high (I certainly can't afford it, haha), but I love thinking of this as a Lego D&D Starter Kit of sorts which allows the owner to use their own collection to make a much bigger, intricate land and story with easy visual representation!
@@CheeseyStudios I hate brick built creatures, still the set is a beauty. Of course its not worth $360, its a scam. I'm gonna go China on this one. I'll get it for probably 100 bucks in a few months from Beijing, free shipping. Let the free market deal with the moral qualms...
My gf is trying to get me this for my 22’nd bday and I’m trying to actively talk her out of it because I’m not trying to burn a hole in her wallet and asked instead if she’d just give D&D a shot with me and three close friends we both adore instead then go out for dinner after. But MAN does this set look dope
Playability or no I would have loved a set like this as a kid. Although I think they should have built it in a way for the set to combine with 1 or 2 other sets but other than that anyone would have a field day with this set.
