Thanks for the awesome review Alex! Other configurations are possible, you can see some of them in the original promo video on my channel. There used to be images at Bricklink, but they've been replaced by the official product photos now. As for the pirate flags - that was personal preference. I tried both flag types and the red flags just looked better to me. The red really popped and linked it nicely to the red highlights in Barracuda Bay. PS. Great video content, your review of the Gotham City skyline set was what convinced me to buy it!
I picked this one up (and the Mushroom House for a friend), but not sure how I feel about this going forward. Series 3/4 have another train, another "water building", two more fortress/castles. I just hope we get some more variety in there.
Great set The building experience doesn't seem the easiest The problem with this set is while it does benefit from a lot of detail, it didn't benefit from Lego quality control, which might have helped make it more accessible with a better build experience
Great comparison to the Barracuda bay. Looks like the Barracuda was a lot more worth getting. Yea, I will be passing on this one. One other thing. We always complain about not getting enough mini figs with official Lego sets. Why in the hell does this one have only 5 mini figs when it is designed by a non Lego person?!
Due to the rules of the Bricklink program. In the conditions for the design, there can be a certain number of minifigures for a certain number of pieces. It's a stupid rule, but Lego is to blame.
I ordered two of this and am extremely happy for having done so after seeing your review! I was fortunate enough to get Pirates of Barracuda Bay (still can't believe the short shelf life of that as I'd have invested in at least one more if retirement was known) appreciate your comparison of these two models. Definitely would like to build the ship to pair with this new model. Congrats on getting your hands on a copy 6 months before the rest of us. 😃
Great review! I really wish this set was 200 or 220. It just doesn’t feel substantial enough for the $240 price tag. Especially when compared to barricada bay which would be the same price when adjusted for inflation. Also insane we have had $40 of inflation in just 4 years…
Thanks Alex, this review sold me on this set. It’s the only one I picked up from this series. I have 2 copies of Barracuda bay that I’ve yet to build and was sold when I saw them all together with this.
I'm so excited to get this and the Brick Cross station. Both look incredible. I wish I didn't miss out on Barracuda Bay when it was in production. I'll get my hands on one of those one day to pair with this set.
Great Review! I have to confess, I’m on the fence about this set now that I’ve seen it up close. I love pirates (it’s the first theme I collected as a kid and the Imperial Flagship broke my dark age), but there’s just something about this set that’s off for me.
This looks very interesting, but I already have Pirates of Barracuda Bay (one of my all time favorite sets), but I don't feel like I need another pirate set unless it is a ship. Also, I have my eye on several sets in series 3 and 4 and will try not to go bankrupt before then.😂
Thanks for the detailed review. I’m still on the fence for this one. It looks great and I am a pirate fan but I prefer ships. I’m also planning to get brick cross station, oceans house and mushroom house so it’s already a big spend. But will seriously consider this as it looks fantastic.
I am very glad I got it. If I did not get it for review, I think there is a very good chance it would not have landed in my collection given that funds are allowing for just one purchase in this series.
Hey Alex. You didnt notice the part of the ships mast that is being used as a lookout? Maybe the ship was torn apart and the few things that they could salvage is seen within. The captains office was likely scavenged off the boat. Yes I did order this set. I love the pirates theme.
It would look much better if it was interconnected properly and also modular in some way as well so you can still take each section off kind of like the Rivendell set or others in that same fashion.
I really wanted to like it, but as a pirates (and castle and space!) fan, I just don’t find it amazing. Don’t seem to be able to find that element that one knows is present in Lego themes in a way or another. Now, though, I’m starting to see that maybe I’m not alone. I sense from comments by some people on social media that they seem to feel the same way. There are several things in this review that sort of speak to some of what’s on my mind. I am aware of how much many other fans do like the set. I’m glad you do! As for me, though, I’m just not feeling it.
Ideas barracuda bay is one our house favorites. Is this new one going to make the shelf for you? I'm still a little burnt by ray the castway.. was so excited to get it, but in the hand its just not satisfying at all. I think the light blue water color doesn't make me happy somehow. No wasn't tempted to make an order for this.
Your right this set sure would go with. Baracuta bay .the skull. Could be a little beter designed add if i had more sea space. I would get this .and their was a gwp set from last year. .that would go with the set s to
It’s a cool set but most of these BDP sets simply feel like fancy MOCs (I mean they basically are) and since it’s all existing elements the pricing feels a bit high for every set
Wait aren't you just supposed to hold up part of the set next to your face then set it behind you and ramble for 17 minutes without presenting any useful information? I do have one correction. Your card will be charged when you pre-order. The funds will be held for authorization and then refunded until the sets ship. You will need the money day one and will not have access to it for an indefinite number of days.
It's quite a different approach, that's for sure. I like it only for a shot at getting something unique, but the process of being on at the right time is not ideal. I wonder if this will evolve into something else after a year or so.
Concept is great. Get unique designs where designers get paid. Not every set needs to be on shelves for 3 years and it's just more sets for people to buy otherwise. My only gripe is the themes the are chosen each time now (castle/train)
I have too many ethical problems with the bricklink designer program. Even though I like the design of this set I won’t buy it because it’ll sell out in the first 60 seconds of availability when 99% of customers are busy with their lives
Don't give up! Although Mountain Fortress sold out quickly in Series 1, the other sets were available long enough for everyone to have a chance to buy, even people like me in Australia!
