Happy May the 4th Jang! Helpful review for those debating a purchase. For me, I skipped this set over the promo period because despite the UCS details, just doesn't feel like a $200+ set. Gray is fine, but I have strong nostalgic attachment to the original blue scheme of the first UCS Tie Intercepter, as inaccurate as it was designed. How could the designer nail so many details around the cockpit, but make the flanking strips near the windscreen so odd? I believe this set will drop in price eventually like the UCS Sand Speeder. Currently, it's over-hyped.
Even though I saw the review on other channels, I still make sure I support Jang. His commentary feels more authentic and mature to me. Keep the reviews coming!!
The thing I like about Jang is that he buys all his sets and isn’t sponsored. Therefore can actually give open and honest feedback without fear of repercussions.
Hey Jang! I believe the dark grey 2x3 slope piece is supposed to represent a replaced piece of fuselage covering. This detail is present on modern TIE model renders, on EA's TIE models this is very easy to notice.
So it's a new addition, not present on the movie props? I was only looking for screen used RoTJ references assuming that was the correct original source
Awesome Jang! What are your thoughts between this and ‘play-scale’ one included in the combo pack with Fang Fighter? Is this worth the extra expense for the size and detail? I know it’s a situational question but…
Totally unrelated to this video, but you need to review the Dungeons and Dragons Red Dragon's Tale. I also can't wait for the new Speed Champions. For sets like the D&D set, I understand that there's a lot of people who get to review it super early, but I think a lot of people, myself included, like to watch a specific person do reviews. I like your style, how you cover each set, and the opinions you express. I find myself watching you review sets and themes that I don't necessarily care about, just because it's you reviewing them
I really think they should credit the studio designer's name on the box. It is really fascinating to me the level of work to design and engineer these.
As others have mentioned, that dark piece is accurate. Looking at the shooting model, there is a dark panel in that location. However on the shooting model, it’s a lot more subtle. They probably should’ve gone with a light gray brick with either a sticker or print in dark gray on it.

I've failed to find any that show it, only replicas & modern fan models. The originals I've seen are the same color all around except for the little dark bits at the 3 & 9 o'clock positions like on the front.

If you find a better stand build I’d love to see a mini follow up video. I agree, my biggest gripe is the pose angle, and something better would really help
I really hate the straps. Those are a huge issue for me I got fixated on. But the wings are incredible. So I'm on the fence about buying it next year. And yes a bad angle on display like the X-Wing. If it had the Fang Fighter VS interceptor cockpit to go with these amazing UCS wings I would be happier. The back of the cockpit looks awful to me. What a mess.
Don't think it's canon anymore, but in the Legends continuity, Rebel pilots did refer to TIE Fighters as "eyeballs", Interceptors as "squints", and Bombers as "blinks."
For me this one just doesn’t have that “wow” factor. Obviously it’s better than the play scale one from last year, but not DRAMATICALLY better. I think part of it though is just my bias against larger-than-minifig-scale UCS sets.
If you figure out a custom build for the stand, you should show it off! I love the interceptor, it's one of my favorite star wars ships, and I couldn't agree more about just how off the presentation is here
Hey Jang, LEGO has already confirmed to switch back to the mat display plagues. Since the shiny ones would get scratched up easily in a lot of people’s sets. Yours seems to look alright tho.👍
I'm a big fan of interceptors (/ sharp wing ties like the silencer) too , and this wasn't grabbing me , but you're so right, the presentation really changes the whole thing. The "nose up" model airplane aah pose was just not working for me. Not a fan of how many studs and understuds are on there though. Especially for a UCS set Love your reviews, great work!
This is a rare case with an upscaled USC set where (imo) some light modding and ignoring of the source could turn this into a really good minifig scale craft
As awesome as it is.. its not a tie defender. To me seeing in the lego store... its just a fraction too small to represent ucs (the recent xwing about the same size didn't have this problem).. The price is acceptable even in aus though.
The "real thing" has panel shapes that are similar to the suspenders on this model. I think my biggest issue with them is the double-hump shape of them rather than a single smooth curve.
Great amazing big adult version of this UCS looks about 1/32 scale . LEGO seem to release upgraded UCS when first addition USC in original condition , unopened iterations start fetching 1200USD 1500USD on E bay . This looks better than the first UCS T I , that came out some years ago , just like the second Falcon was better and the second X wing was better but the 3rd X wing has received a lot of complaints about engineering being hard to assemble , stability issues accuracy including way oversized engine necelle's and pieces fall off as you try to build it and is reported to be very delicate and should not be moved once assembled. This new UCS looks like a winner .
I actually think the price is more justified than the modular, because everyone knows star wars stuff is expensive and this is a collector display model
Looks great, not a day one buy for me. Might get it once it’s discounted (like the current UCS X Wing). I just hope this means we will be getting remakes of other older UCS sets! Fingers crossed for an Imperial shuttle or B wing UCS this time next year! 😂
I got it but my brother got it for me in the uk since there is no Lego store next to me, let alone getting the promos, so I won’t be able to build it till 3 months but most importantly I got it.
Wondering about that as well. It would probably have a tendency to fall over the nose. But maybe it would just hold (but put a strain on the parts)? And most of all, is it even mechanically possible to attach it in that orientation?
I’ve always thought that the canonical size of the various TIE Fighters was way too large… seems like they would be somewhat smaller than the various Rebellion ships, designed to be more efficient and economical, and attack overwhelming waves, rather than be a force to reckon with on their own. so, while it’s a nice looking build… I don’t think it would look nice on my shelf with my UCS Rebel ships, so don’t think I’ll be getting it 🤷🏻♂️ …I might like a new TIE Advanced, though 🤔
'Straps' I wonder, if they had instead re-oriented them 90degrees, such that the hatch and viewport were swapped relative to the strap banding. Would that look better? might give it better radial symmetry when seen from the front.
I got this here in Oz mainly just to get the free droid carrier from Lego lol. I really do like this though but I tend to never get around to building UCS sets. I still need to build the A wing and X wing as well as the Land Speeder. I do much prefer this price point of less than $400 Australian for UCS . The huge $1000 Plus UCS sets look great but there is just nowhere to put them. I am still just contemplating putting all the unopened ones in boxes and sell them in 10 to 20 years as a collectors item or something. The Stranger Things upside down set I have that I never opened keeps going up in value rather a lot too.
I haven’t had LEGO for so long- a lot of these techniques threw me for a loop. I was used to my bricks and plates clicking in place, this hinge will hold it kind of here for now isn’t my favorite. Also don’t love the gaps. But it looks cool- just hope it doesn’t get its butt kicked by gravity.
Crappiest stand ever I just put final piece on lifted it and the whole thing just shattered....throwing it away I might be done with these sets after this I spent so much time building this just for it's weak poorly designed stand to shatter almost had it somewhat fixed but so much is wrong its not worth it. I'll stick to sets like the falcon or star destroyers they make it possible to lift easier and move. 0 out of 10
I'm still not a big fan of the, as you called them "straps" around the cockpit, but the angle of the stand makes it way worse than it looked when you were demonstrating the different angles.
I’m still waiting for mine to arrive but this looks so much better in your video compared to the photos and such on the Lego site. Absolutely love the shaping of the wings.
The throwback-style UCS stands this year and last year were a mistake. Nose up is an extremely unflattering look for a Star Wars ship and while you can kinda modify the stand on the UCS X-Wing to get it at a side profile, it says something that the angle of the stand on this set is probably the core aesthetic reason I have no interest in buying this set of my favorite variant of TIE Fighter.
looks much worse in person and i went to legos to buy it and seeing it live changed my mind... the cockpit isnt sphere at all, many gaps, can be done better or more accurate in smaller version

@@JANGsLEGOreviews I must've been mistaken, I do have photos of screen used Tie Fighters with the darkened panels at the 1:30 position. I've also seen pictures of screen used tie-interceptors and they are lacking that feature... I wonder if the Lego designer saw the Tie-Fighter and assumed the Interceptor had the same feature.
Pretty nice set. As a display model I also don't understand why it's not at a jauntier angle on the stand; maybe they didn't think of it for some reason, or maybe they couldn't make it work. I'm sure people will be using their own stands soon enough! Being able to see skin at the back of the minifig's head just seems plain wrong, though.
As an owner of the old 7181 TIE-Interceptor i need to say that is a shame that the pilot dont fit into the Cockpit. The new set is nice....but why the pilot dont fit in?
I remember my build of the UCS Tie Fighter as one of the best - the way they attached those huge wings over the tiny centre, with no Technic parts. I was so impressed. This one's better visually but doesn't seem as well designed with the raised elements around the front and gaps.
