from what i know, invincible's iron man's helmet doesn't open like in the movies, i think it just folds out and reveals the full head, so i think (again) it's accurate. But you have to admit, that the new design looks cool. great review btw.
Actually, the way it works in the comics is that there are two stages (largely because he can just reshape the armor basically however he wants): one way, the mask retracts into the helmet. The rest of the helmet stays on the head, but the mask just pulls into it, instead of flipping up. The other way, the helmet just entirely retracts into the armor, as you said.
Justin Hammer was dead in the comics when the suit was made. The suit was developed under Hammer's company by his successors in order to get revenge against Tony Stark for Justin Hammer's death.
Agreed. My guess is that this is to make the set interesting to fans of the films as well as the comics. Otherwise there isn't a great deal here to entice people not into the comics.
i can see them trying to link it to the movies by having him in the suit and not anyone else also he is also a villain in the cartoon so they may have thought it would have sold better.
Yeah you're right Justin Hammer shouldn't be piloting the Detroit steel armour. However at the time I think Justin Hammer is a lot older as he was in the comics may have even been dead or in jail when Detroit steel debuted. What I did was give the Detroit steel minifig a different head and put the Justin Hammer head on a suited minifig body essentially giving me 2 figs
The Iron Man figure is based off this armor marvel.wikia.com/wiki/Iron_Man_Armor_Model_51 . In the comics it doesn't open up, it fully collapses into the neck. If they used the previous helmet then it wouldn't at all be accurate to how it appeared in the comic because the shapes are all wrong.
Kai Clein No, this is not. The picture Jang had in front of him(the one in the link) was the Bleeding Edge. That's why he said it looked like the movie armor.
Have to disagree on this one Jang, being a fan of the comics that Iron Man Helmet looks PERFECT, do I miss the face? Definitely, I love the moving faceplate, but the design is EXACTLY like comics an it's beautiful man
Hi Jang, another great review, thanks. Yes it was short but it didn't need any more detail. My five year old son and I do enjoy videos with a bit of you playing with the sets at the end of the video, it always puts a smile on our faces when those videos crop up from time to time. I was delighted with both builds, the car is OK but the suit looks better in hand than on screen. This looks great grappling with the hulk buster suit from Age of Ultron. I like the new Iron Man suit, I liked the flip up helmet a lot but after a lot of play by young children the 'face' of the mask was removed and replaced so many times it got loose so it has virtually no friction left. It is nice to change things up a bit. I prefer the darker red of the other models but this one does not scream 'Iron Man' when used in MOC minifigs. Not to me anyway, any time I used the old design in a custom minifig it just looked out of place on any other torso. with these figures you can make a nice mini-hulk buster with a few simple mods of the Nexo Knights battle suit Macy and a mini-detroit Steel with the battle suit clay armour. Which my son was absolutely delighted with so we both give this new design the thumbs up. thanks again for all your reviews, please keep them up, I love the MOC stuff but I like to hear your opinion and read the opinions in the comments before I commit to to buy a set.
Excellent review. You're personally one of my favourite Lego channels, giving very detailed and unbiased reviews. Always excited to see what you'll come out with next.
I personally like the new Iron Man helmet, we've had the original for 5 years. Lego could also go back to the old design for the movie sets, so this isn't a permanent change.
One thing I don't understand about this set is why they used 90 degree angle elements to attach Lola's front wheels instead of 0 degree angle elements; it would've made the flight mode that little bit more presentable.
Great review. So happy to finally get Coulson. In answer to your question, no in the comics Detroit Steel would not be piloted by Justin Hammer. It was built well after he was dead. It was built by Justin's daughter Justine Hammer. First piloted by an Army guy. Let. Johnson. Later it was piloted by Hammers Granddaughter Sasha. (Mother Justine Hammer, father The Mandarin) Who was a bit of a psycho genius. Her boyfriend was Ezekiel Stane, son of Obediah Stane aka The Iron Monger. Apparently there is a bit of inbreeding among Tony Stark's enemies.
Think I may pick this up after all just for Lola. I just love that car overall. I agree about the wheels/tires. Something about those just don't seem quite right. Thanks for the review as always Jang! Look forward to your reviews as always!
As part of the stark resilient storyline from 2008 the Detroit steel armour was piloted by Sasha hammer. This was back in 2008 in issue 25 of invincible iron man. It has also been used by individual unnamed soldiers dubbed hammermech. The design was made by Justine and Sasha hammer as revenge for Tony killing Justin hammer. The mech was supposed to be a perfect solider for post 9/11. Sasha hammer piloted the prototype and in a later storyline called fear itself LT.Johnson donned the suit. So in short Doug,Sasha and Johnson dawned the suit but not Justin. He was dead at this point in canon. So for comic accuracy no. In a tv show or other media I am not aware of maybe. But for my knowledge he never piloted it.
The old Iron Man helmet wore out it's welcome so I'm glad there's something new. It works for Invincible Iron Man but unfortunately the new mold won't look very good for an MCU version. I have a sneaking suspicion the reason Justin Hammer is in the suit is because he will appear that way in Avengers Assemble. He already had the adaptoid and chances are he'll be returning. If not, they just chose Hammer because he'd be a much more recognizable and desirable minifig.
I use to make lego military stories with a friend, in which the cars and trucks are alive, the trucks have eyes on the windshield, while the cars have them on the lights. In the stories, Lola was one of the most disliked cars, at least its what the trucks (and my minifigure, who's name is Ren, which is my real name) say. Even in an episode in which we time travel to WW2, Lola somehow snuck with the squad (Ren, my minifigure, James, my friend's minifigure, Military, the squad's truck, and Compactor, a garbage truck(not a member of the squad), o, and 2 women who don't appear appear after the beginning, they probably got lost in a military base in Germany) but since Lola was smashed to bits in my friend's backpack, it was probably left in WW2, maybe with Opel Blitz (a German military commander truck) yet Blitz still lives along with Katyusha, who is Russian rocket launcher truck and while he was in WW2, he is still working for the Russian army.
I actually have this set I looked at the detroit steel's feat more closely and I noticed the feet kinda look like high heels. I make Iron Man/Tony Stark make fun of him for that. I love Lola it just looks so cool. great review!
I could not agree with you more JANG about the Iron Man helmet. I'm happy that LEGO is taking inspiration from the comics (too bad we don't another suit based off iron man 3 like the scuba suit or the space suit). I feel that Lego should have used a helmet from the MCU version of iron man only molded it in bright red. If they did not want to use new printing they could have just used the printing from the mark 43 and 45 suits just molded them onto bright red and it would not look to bad.
I don't know why whenever a LEGO set is designed to have the dish side of the wheel out (spokes in) per the instructions and the box, there's always someone telling me I've put them on wrong :)
Well the instructions say to put them that way (the wheels are reversible, so you can face ti either way depending on the appearance you want). Personally I think Lola would look better with the wheels facing spokes out.
I love how Detroit Steel has the same chassis as the Hulkbuster. It fits with the character as Hammer is the poor man's Stark. I'll be making the same mods to DS as I did with the Hulkbuster. The technic rod used for the hips is just a bit too long in my opinion. I couldn't agree more with you about Iron Man's helmet. It seems just fine for DS, but not for Tony.
Cool set, and getting Agent Phil Coulson is quite the treat, it's the first time they made him in Lego form (maybe they should make a Lego Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. set, that would be super!), his car Lola is.... not bad but not great, the conversion is pretty cool though. The Mech is great because it can be posed easily, not sure about all the characters, not familiar with Justin Hammer, I don't follow the comic books.
I think they included Justin Hammer to connect to the Captain America jet set. Justin Hammer created the Adaptoid. So, I think LEGO put him in this set so the kids can use more stories with their imagination.
You're right Doug Johnson or Sasha Hammer (although the suit resembles Doug Johnson's suit) should be piloting Detroit Steel as Justin Hammer was dead when the suit was made
Personally, I don't think LEGO could have reasonably used the movie Iron Man helmet piece(s) without making a new, flatter mask mold to print the design onto, and LEGO didn't want to have to make two new molds for Iron Man helmets this year instead of just one (understandably). Plus, in the comics, because this armor is basically able to be shaped to Tony's whim instead of just being a rigid armor system with set functions, he can actually retract the helmet fully into the armor to reveal his full head. He can also remove just the mask, though in the comics, it basically retracts into the helmet, instead of flipping up. So, I'm satisfied with how they did this minifig.
I actually really like the new iron man mask. no need to worry about the old one not being produced anymore as it is still representative of the cinematic iron man. I like it's look and I like that it is very current and comic related. they need to make more marvel sets based on comic versions of characters. this new piece looks like it could be used for the infamous iron man if they ever made one. I would love that Cuz doom is one of my favorite characters period. that and I'd love to see a spider gwen minifigure.
Thank you for this review! The Iron Man helmet was going to make or break the set for me, and it broke it :( So thank you for your in depth reviews, they help a lot in my purchases!
Hey I like this new fire blast or whatever it is called. It doesn't look bad (cough cough stud cough cough shooter cough ) and it still has a shoring feature.
There was a much simpler technique used in a spider man set from 2013 (I think) for the car for Venom. That would have worked on Lola instead of the big technic mechanism.
Nice review. I don’t know about you Jang, but I tend to find those movie-style helmets to be quite annoying sometimes. Over time they can become very loose, and even from the start they are pretty easy to knock-off, whether it’s up or down or not. I’d prefer this version of the mask but that’s just my opinion.
In the comics the helmet doesn't open up like in the movies. That armours helmet retracts and can transform into any armour, like the hulk buster etc...
Lol, that pun was awesome, even if unintended; it took me a second to clue in but those are the best puns I think ;) As for the set, the mech is perfectly done with all the proper articulation for realism and I think the car build is really nice even if it inexplicably uses the yellow technic bushings instead of the gray. Sadly, I'm very disappointed in the Iron Man figure and the choice of helmet. I have to confess that I'm extremely biased on that point due to the fact that this is the second time I've been foiled in my desire for an Iron Man figure. The first was in the Spider-Man Homecoming: Beware the Vulture set which didn't have a Tony Stark head underneath the helmet, rather a generic trans-bluish head. At the same time though, the opening helmet is far superior and I agree with Jang that it should have been used instead. Overall though, it's still a very nice set.
I also thought Justin hammers appearance was weird but might just be a choice to have him as a minifig in general. Iron man's helmet shouldn't be able to lift up because in the comic's it can just disappear of his face.
In my Marvel Ultimate Character Encyclopedia it says Detroit Steel is constructed by Justine and Sasha Hammer in answer to Stark's Iron Man suit, and hired Doug Johnson to test the prototype and train future Steelcorps pilots. In the storyline Fear Itself, however, Doug is turned to stone, and when he is freed Sasha Hammer kills him and takes the armor.
That is the newest Iron Man from the comics (basically Iron Heart look based on the helmet), but its nice to see them using the new comic look I think. I see what you mean overall, but I think it is Invincible Iron Man.
I actually like the new helmet piece for iron man, I like how lego's trying something new with iron man, although I do think that Lego should've made a new face print for tony stark to go with the new suit
im only gonna buy this for the vette, i collect corvettes and have over 300 , of course i have to modify it to look more like one but i digress, nice vid!
I think the Justin Hammer move was done to: a) Not put some generic nee/reused head of the actual guy, and b) an easy way to create a nee character without making a set for him, whic is ironic because in tje tv show justin hammer invented the adaptoid, they coul've easily put him there, but oh well...
Dear Jang, just can't help but noticed that the red colour in your video actually looks much brighter compared with the red lego piece seen in person..Non of the other colours looks that much bright though..Is this a result of the lighting set-ups in your filming studio?
I was planning on buying the set cause there was an iron man and I'm a HUGE iron man fan, but the helmet ruined it for me, I ended up getting a set from homecoming and getting pretty much what I wanted. It's still a cool set
Awesome review, I'm not a huge fan of marvel but I do really like the design for this car. Do you have any suggestions for car ideas you want to see in Lego sets?
