according to my dad, no the engine cover isn't hinged, but lifts off. I suppose in a race, its easier if you don't have to duck under a cover to get to the engine
@cmartin_ok
@cmartin_ok Год назад
Not just that. It's the space saving and weight saving by having no hinges. Far simpler and lighter to just have catches to release, the the service technicians just lift the entire panel off the car

@@darrenfalconer3267 It's very common for race cars to have bolt-on panels. It's even shown in the 911 rsr, the front hood does not hinge up as it's bolted down, the 488 rear boot is also bolt on

I bought this Peugeot as my first Lego set ever. I have to say that I'm really satisfied. The instructions were mostly easy to follow, even though I had had a few beers, although I have to say there was a moment where I had to undo a lot just because of one misplaced brick. The perfectionist inside me hates the stickers because they leave very little room for error. The car looks very nice. I think that the toy looks nothing like the real one, but I actually prefer the esthetics of the toy. The whole design is very study which is great because I have an instict for grabbing things by structurally weakest point. One small problem is that it's difficult to position the doors in such a way that they open and close smoothly, but it's not a problem big enough to spend time investigating. Something that is a bigger issue and applies to Lego sets in general is the inclusion of spare parts. Yes, it's nice they're there, but I was a bit scared that I had missed a step when I saw a few bricks still on the table after finishing the first bag and I had to look it up online that a few bricks are supposed to be left unused. After finishing the whole set I was left with four 2780 pins while online resources say I should be left with two which means that most likely I missed some connection somewhere, and now I have realistically zero chances of figuring out what exactly went wrong in my build process. Probably these two pins aren't important though if I can't notice anything wrong with the car. Without the spare parts included I would at least be able to track my brick usage per-bag. All in all, I wanted to have interesting and satisfactory, yet straightforward building experience which would result in a cool-looking display piece that also technically speaking satisfies the definition of a toy car just for that one evening sometime in June next year when I randomly decide to play with the car for ten minutes. I definitely can tell I got what I had expected. I already ordered two more sets to build in the future: the Sian and the Defender.

I'm always surprised that people aren't fans of LEGO technic sets, cause I grew up on Bionicle and have had very few regular brick LEGO sets. However, some of the larger cars have looked amazing, like the white Porsche 911 set 10295, so I got that one

Apart from amount of DBG parts, I like the suspension in this set - more of the new shock absorbers is a good thing as well :)

I hope Lego will find a solution for a windshield on their Technic cars. Back when they were largely skeletal like 8880 or 8070, the empty window frames didn't bother me much, but with this new much more panelled look they go for currently, it can look very jarring, especially on the Peugeot or Ford GT. They got a great idea on the Ducati Panigale bike, with the thick flexible foil windshield. If they found a way of making one fully transparent, and how to attach it to the frame, something like that could be the answer for cars as well.
@AresWasTaken
@AresWasTaken Год назад
It gets tricky because once you do a real windscreen you kind of have to do real windows for every other window frame or it’s going to look a little weird.
@CrazyChemistPL
@CrazyChemistPL Год назад
@@AresWasTaken Not necessarily. Look at the Creator Expert series cars. They usually only have windshield and back window, but no side windows. Many diecast model cars are similar as well.
@AresWasTaken
@AresWasTaken Год назад
@@CrazyChemistPL A lot of creator expert sets don't have it because they can't make custom window elements for every set, but in sets like the double decker and ecto1, where the windows are all pretty square and fits existing elements, they are filled in. Cheaper die cast models dont have windows because of costs and it's easier to open doors through the window, but higher end die cast models do have windows (unless it's an open top car).

Great two parter review of this technic set, the comparison to the other technic eras is very satisfying as it gives me the consumer something to draw comparisons to. Awesome job and looking forward to more review videos.
@coffeeinhandproductions3238
While I'm not planning on getting this set anytime soon I'll agree that this is still an enormous improvement over the first handful of builds at this price point scale. A denser more functional build with realistic styling is a really exciting direction for future Technic releases. Personally I really like the smaller scale of the Raptor/Ford GT but seeing a similar build trend carry over to larger cars is great to see. Also really love the B model on the Rally car from I think 2018. Despite the hollowness of the build it's still decently functional in both models.

@SarcasticTentacle
@SarcasticTentacle Год назад
Honestly I'm always going to be horribly biased in favour of the older sets for their B models. And while this is probably a minority opinion I do like the more simplistic, chunky and off brand look of the older sets. I can absolutely respect the increasing accuracy of the modern sets but they don't appeal as much. It's probably just because that is what I grew up with, when technic sets never even had panels and they were all skeletons made of beams and rods. They were built more for functions and playability than to look good on a shelf while the old model team series (now basically creator expert) were all about minimal functions but high detail and accuracy.
@natbarmore
@natbarmore Год назад
I’m mostly in agreement. I’d rather have “a hybrid race car” that’s a bit blocky and lifts design elements from a whole category of vehicle, but with cool building techniques and lots of clever and interesting functions and mechanisms, than an accurate-looking Chevy or Porsche or whatever with excellent shaping but few functions and not very Lego-like. (For a similar reason, I sorta miss when the vast majority of Lego parts were blue/yellow/red/white/black/gray, and other colors were rare accents or nonexistent. Those bright primary colors are a big part of the look of a Lego creation, to me. I love many of the newer, subtler or more-realistic colors, but they lose a little something when they’re the norm.)
@declan2775
@declan2775 Год назад
@@natbarmore IMO not having to adhere to a certain brand works better in smaller scale too because they can design something that looks good (or at least ok) rather than something that vaguely looks like the real thing but is a mess overral (see: raptor, shelby)

I made the same comment before about the McLaren F1 that the steering can't be made perfectly straight because they used an even number of gears rather than an odd number. Somebody told me that theirs was perfectly straight, but it even shows it as being off in some of the official photos with the designer. Unless the designer of the set himself built it incorrectly... And I don't think engine covers in Le Mans Prototypes and F1 cars are ever hinged. They always just lift the whole thing off. There's not really any reason to make it hinged. It would add weight, and it would get in the way of the mechanics working on it.

At 1.43 , there is a part that you forgot to connect, which connects the hood to the windshield, and simulates the gap that you talking about, when saying that you don't feel the need of having a window. Also, GT cars, like the Ferrari and Porsche, are always higher then the prototypes like the peugeot, so that gap is perfectly acceptable

The LEGO Technic Peugeot 9x8 hypercar looks awesome, but when I hear people say it is a cool display piece, it makes me worry because it means LEGO Technic focuses on more on display and less functions. Also, I think a big missed opportunity are the printed tires. The real car has printed tires. Come on LEGO, why can't we get printed tires anymore if you call it a display piece? However, I still like the set and the designer of the model did a great job.

Thanks for this balanced review. Especially the comparisons with the some older models is very interesting. I would call it evolution towards the Peugeot and recent Ford GT. Luckily they didn't remove the HOG-steering in these sets, like they did with the Porsche 911 RSR and Ferrari 488 GTE. It really adds to the fun, when completing a model. In fact, I'd wish they added the HOG-steering to the 1:8 scale supercars too.

@@RacingBrick I don’t want to argue or anything like it, but if you look closer to the air intake above the windshield, it’s definitely a triangular shape which is the new version, and the front of the car has two little winglets which also a feature that the show car didn’t have. PS.: Also, I think Lego always shows the pictures (on the box/website) of that specific version of the car that they tried to replicate. For example the new speed champions Porsche 963 set, doesn’t look like the current car (I mean it does, but it doesn’t have any sponsors on it), so Lego printed pictures of the car on the box, where we see the car without them. The same thing here, we see the current version of the car and not the preview renders.

@@hegedustamas4787 I understand that the car has changed, and believe me it will continue changing over the season, just like all race cars do since they are in constant development. I don't think any of those changes are significant enough to influence my opinion about the set or the end result. I simply used clean official photos where certain angles of the car were visible, which wouldn't be possible with photos taken during races.

So, no 1/8 scale lego supercar this year?

No, but they come out every second year so we don't expect any until 2024 :)
