This is one of the few LOTR sets I have, and as much as I like it, I'd love to see what could be done with the concept today. Lego could really just print money by releasing a set exactly like this one, hopefully they choose to do that sometime.
The turret of the wall isn't actually entirely inaccurate. When looking at the deeping wall, there is a turret on the very right side, just before the diagonal portion that raises up towards the keep. So for real accuracy, this build would be connected to the keep, THEN would have the section that is destroyed. The only issues with this though is that it looks a bit odd to have the wall extended and the stream grate on the very end. Ideally I think it'd look best to have (from the keep outward) this build, the grate section, and then a modified version of this build with a flat face.
You could make that debate but it doesn't line up with it at all when it's attached to the bigger Helms Deep set. Also, if you buy multiple of this one, the turret multiplies, which is even less accurate.
Wait, are you one of my 'former' favorite Lego reviewers LegoLee? It just hit me when you said that you reviewed these sets back in 2012. Because of LOTR, I came back from my dark ages, the minifigure quality exploded during that time. Did you come back, or you never left?
