Lego 4558 Metroliner from 1991 - A 9 volt passenger train. 11 minifigures and 768 pieces. This set did not come with the speed regulator to power the engine, but other than that it is a very cool set. Was remade later as set 10001 and that set came in a smaller, black&white box. In 1993 they introduced the Club Car set 4547 which was a nice addition to this train. I will show it in more detail in another video.

This is the best looking passenger train I've seen. I wish they would release something like it again with modern day power functions and track.

nah, not the rc-stuff. i'd love to see something like that with a modernised 9V-system, digital controls and several contacts on each motor so you can just use one or two "control centers" with a speed regulator and some buttons to control several trains including light, switches etc like the "real" model trains have where you can control dozens of models with 3 or 4 different funcitons each with just a tiny wired handpiece. at least that's what roco had 10+ years ago

@@RadimentriX 1. Track-powered 9V with outright DCC would end up more expensive than either 9V or PF on their own, and 2. "Real" model trains don't have to also work as building toys, so they're able to make design choices that don't play as nicely with something like LEGO (and make more use of their internal space). IMO... Unless they can make a track-power system with the same level of building flexibility when it comes to wheel assemblies, they should stick to PF and work on ways to use smaller receivers and battery boxes. 9V wasn't exactly kind to steam engines.

There have been some I'd say are comparable. 7938 is built similarly, although like a _lot_ of sets of modern-image streamlined trains it lacks operating doors, and doesn't have the long-haul amenities this one does. 60337 is single-ended and even more modern-image (including having a bubble canopy), but has an amenity-rich interior _and_ *operating doors*. Wheelchair-accessible doors, at that!

I feel like I got a good deal. For less than $400 I got this set, the Club Car, the speed regulator, a sealed box of straight tracks, and a couple of sealed boxes of curved tracks, and an open pack of switch tracks,

Actually, if memory serves LEGO 9V handles balloon loops fine despite being 2-rail. Or maybe I just got lucky or am remembering wrong. Anyway, the Metroliner is awesome and I want it. And I want LEGO to unretire the friction-hinge pantographs, because they're better than the ratchet-hinge ones. The most notable difference with 10001 piece-wise is that the pigtails hairpiece was replaced with a ponytail. I think the mold for the pigtails hairpiece degraded beyond usability not long after this set was made.

I had the metroliner as a kid and it was my dream of dreams to have the dining car. I never got it though. It's cool to see it run with the club cars after all this time.

love this train, it'll probably be the next one i get, possibly together with that 2 level dining car :D the cowboy would fit better in the load'n'haul set though, sitting in the big car on a hay bale :D

I should do a tutorial sometime. They basically evolved from push trains, to battery operated (4.5V or 3 c battery), then mid-rail power 12V dc from AC transformer. Then 9V rail power (as in this video) from transformer. Then 9V battery powered power functions motors (I think because of safety issues). I didn't even mention Duplo tracks

I dream about this set I absolutely love it! It must have been cheap when it first came out! This set is umbeliveable! Epic and also I loved the review. I have been saving up for 2 months now and I hope to get it by July next year I have saved up $70 now! This is the first time I have seen this review. Is there a cheap way to get this? Did you get it cheap? I'm starting to get into Lego trains! (Mostly because the Lego trains look really cool when they move on their own) I really want to get this one, it just seems like the best minifig scale passenger train. It seems to be really expensive on bricklink. If you know a good way to get this please tell me!

+The Lego Detective sadly it just gets more and more expensive but not as expensive as some. There really is no easy way to get it cheaply now unless you find it at a garage sale or an estate sale. It is one of the best passenger trains LEGO made and they made an abundance of them - do it might be cheaper than the Emerald Night

i buy 4558 in pieces -few window an bricks felt, with complet 4512 and 4555 for 150 euro on e bay....i invest 20 euro for windows and missing parts...so 170 euro for 4512,4558,and 4555 witch are now complet...what you say guys?i am in germany

The 2K Gamer this is Not as easy the old Sets didnt hade a Part list at the instruction Booklet you musst find the Brick list and at for some Brick are no Pictures aviable at the Brick list for such old sets

They don't make those 9V tracks anymore not because the tracks have safety issues but the power regulator has...or to be precice: the plug that goes into your wall outlet. Those in the US are so unsafe that Lego decided not to produce any electrics that require a wallplug anymore. Here in Germany we don't have those issues because our wall outlets are completely safe. Blaming the US system that we don't get such great stuff from Lego anymore.

This is just pure ignorance. SOME wall outlets are unsafe. Just like in Germany. Any modern electrical system is safe in both countries. The older you get, with nearly anything, the more dangerous it tends to be.

@@akg_table This has nothing to do with ignorance! It's a fact. Lego had several cases in court in the US because of that. That's why they changed their system. And of course I believe you that new power outlets in the US are save but most of them are not new. That's the problem. Here in Germany we never had bad outlets. They were save from the beginning. Please don't take this personaly just because you are from the US.

They are basically the same except the rerelease has modern versions of certain bricks. Minor details such as opened stud on panel versus a closed stud.

It is built incorrectly. Perhaps the bogies are in the wrong holes.

Shahpour Nosrati-Fard Usually a club car is $100-$150 (I think it was $35 when it was sold in stores originally) and the Metroliner is around $200-$300 (retail around $130). It is in high demand because it is such a good set
