Great video and don't feel bad for giving your opinion from your skills level perspective. I own the Summilux 35 and the 50mm F1.4 V2 and these lenses have all kinds of artifacts wide open and when shooting in bright scenes. I see loads of CA and Halation. The halation is more noticeable when pushing the lens to its .4m shorter focusing distance. With that said I tried the Summicron 35 and couldn't notice a better image quality than the Summilux stopped down to match the F2 aperture. I am thinking about getting the Summicron due to the lighter and smaller footprint. Great in depth detailed review.

Appreciate the non-professional review. I am a non-professional photographer for over 50 years with no desire to become a professional. Also just bought a Leica M11👍

Thanks for the review! Great job!! But for some reason I feel I feel most outdoor images is a tiny bit underexposed… On your images, I don’t see any meaningful color difference between the images produced by the two lenses. I know that the tone of corn asph II is cooler than the version 1 and FLE 1 SOOC. Do you see any difference in the color tone here? Thank you!

Nice review SC. I have the 35/2.4 Summarit-M so your comparison was helpful. The FLE II close focus is very attractive and I think I'll start saving up.

Yes, the 35 Summilux-M is an incremental upgrade from my Summicron. I needed to pixel-peep to notice the extra sharpness. The close-focus distance is significantly improved, but you need to use Live View to access the close-focus, so I needed to put on my reading glasses to use the close-focus. But overall it would make a great upgrade to the Summarit with its improved sharpness and extra versatility.

@@sc1 I would've loved to buy the Summilux-M 35mm FLE but it's $7500 Canadian dollars presently for a new one. I had to settle for a used Summarit-m 35mm f2.4 asph.

SC, if you could only have one 35 Summilux which would you choose and why, the FLE or the Steel Rim? I love bokeh, but I also want sharpness on occasion. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps
@sc1
@sc1 10 месяцев назад
Tough choice, but I might have to choose the FLE for the clean image, build quality, close focus distance, and it still has bokeh. I could still use a diffusion filter to bring in some haziness, but it still doesn’t give the distinctive colors of the Steel Rim.

@@sc1 good gracious, you are not making this easy, but I’m happy to exchange with someone with your experience with both lenses. “Distinctive colors”? WOW… I had the M10R but really didn’t like the color profile. The M11 on the other hand is perfect. Are you suggesting that the Steel Rim produces colors more distinctive and unique over the lux? That makes me want it but I’m still nervous about pulling the trigger. I want to pair a 35 up with my 75. And it is between these two options. I’m stationed in Okinawa, Japan so it’s hard to find a camera that has either. Leica gear isn’t normally available in most camera shops. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps
@sc1
@sc1 10 месяцев назад
@@chapsibnnoel3626 Yes, I could be imagining it, but I think the colors POP more on the Steel Rim, especially the reds and greens, and the character of the bokeh is different. (More swirly? On the steel rim/ more even blurriness on the FLE) I couldn’t choose one lens over the other, so that’s why i have both. Are you Navy Chaplain by chance? (Navy Reserve Medical Corps here)

@@sc1 PS: I also just pre-ordered the Leica Q3. I just recently spent three days in Kyoto. The Q3 with its size, megapixels, crop factor, autofocus, and stilt screen would have made it the perfect Leica travel companion. Be Blessed, Doc Chaps

@@chapsibnnoel3626 The Q3 is very good, it does so many things well. I’m keeping it. Only bad thing is no interchangeable lens, but that’s what the SL2-S is for.

love my 35 pre-asph! the newer ones produce very clinical images which is fantastic if that's what you prefer. frames made the pre-asph match the vintage aesthetics of the leica m series cameras. we have an m9 and m10 btw.

Thanks for posting this. I enjoyed your photos. The pre and post editing examples were interesting. I can't decided if I prefer 50m or 35mm focal length. Also Summicron or Summilux, everyone one of them has a place.

I definitely think the 35 Summilux is much sharper than the 35 Summicron, if that’s what you need. I also definitely recommend the 50mm Summilux. Very nice for taking portrait shots. I have another video about that lens somewhere on my channel.

wow nice lens. did u put some filter to protect the front elements? if so, what brand. thanks
@sc1
@sc1 Год назад
Yes, I use a UV filter on my 35 Lux, 50 Lux, and 75 APO Cron. Just for protection, Instead of a lens cap. Either from Leica or K&F Concept or B&W. The 35 and 50 take the same filter size, so I also sometimes use a polarizer filter if I'm taking photos of my car or a lake.

@@sc1 thanks for the reply. am not sure which brand am going to. probably hoya or b+w. leica filters are expensive and i heard its made by schott or others. hopingg it wont degrade the image. i just got the silver version of your 35mm lux v2. the problem is i dont have a M bodies. just started the lens first. lol. slowly slowly. haha. thinking of buying techart adapter for sony. but am resisting atm. :-)

I wanted to learn how to use the Rangefinder, then I actually found out that it makes me enjoy going out to photograph more. I would have preferred a pre-owned FLE II, but there are just not many available yet. It’s extremely sharp and shallow depth of field. It might be my most versatile lens.

How's the RF blockage with the lux? the previous version without the hood was not bad but it still blocked more than the cron.

Which do you prefer this or the 50mm summilux?

Both are equal quality. It just comes down to whether you prefer shooting in 35 or 50mm. I think the 35 is more versatile in different situations, but the 50 is better for portraits.

It's a mistake to sell the Summicron; over the years you will discover that less elements produce a better 3D image with a better colour map than more elements. It's basic optical science but it takes time to notice.
