Leica D Lix 8 quick overview. Took the D Lux 8 for a quick spin in Zurich thanks to my friends at Leica Store Zurich. At a Glance the Leica D Lux 8 has a lot of the character from the Leica Q3, smaller and with a zoom lens instead. The image quality is surprisingly great. You can check the post here on RU-vid. I’ll be doing a proper overview this weekend when I put more time with the camera. But I can see how this camera can be a great addition for anyone looking for a tiny pocketable Leica camera with the great range a very decent resolution. While the Megapixels of the Leica D Lux 8 cap at 17 that’s pretty much more than enough when you take in consideration that you will zoom in for your framing giving you enough res to print fairly large.
The Leica D Lux 8 sports a Micro 4/3 sensor that offers stunning image quality. One of the surprising things in the D Lux 8 is the speed of the Autofocus.
The startup of the Leica D Lux 8 is really fast as well.
The menus and interface have been mirrored from the Q3 and recent cameras such as the Leica SL3 and M11.
Enjoy this quick street photography journey with the Leica d lux 8 while I get ready to film my in depth review of this little camera.
Subscribe for that upcoming video and feel free to ask any question you may have.
I have to say that I didn’t want to like it this much but grew on me in just a few minutes.

I've had the LX100 when it came out but the extending lens got a little annoying. I would have preferred a fixed lens and maybe an aps-c sensor but that is just me.

Apsc would’ve been awesome. But most likely that would’ve entail a larger body and heavier lens. The DLux 8 is truly pocketable.

@@GastonShutters Look at the Leica X-U that is roughly the same size but had an aps-c sensor, a 23mm f/1.7 lens. But I guess that would cannibalize Q3 sales. :D

If the image output is not sensational (color science, overall image beauty/balance, sharpness), 1600 euro's in todays market even for Leica is excessive (no fixed aperture), sensor / lens innovation, software innovation? Everyone and their cousins are going to purchase another Leica or the new Fuji ... the LX100II is half the price (and perfect for pro-sumers) ... You can have alot for 1600 euro's ... and for a little more you get alot more ...

From the specs, it’s a sheep in wolf’s clothing. As a Q3 owner, the Q3 ‘look and feel’ is attractive, but I am not sure it would convince me to upgrade from my D-Lux 7.

Nice one the fly scoop! A win for Leica. A facelift, but with useful benefits over the 7. For sure, an attractive consumer proposition, or second casual camera for M or L shooters. Practical size, good battery life, enjoyable experience, zoom is handy on such a camera with M4/3 sensor. A shame there's no fun, creative jpeg modes for casual users. And no weather sealing, I think. But I'd rather this than the X100 (and I've got one!). I'd be most interested in your view of its wide aperture image quality and max zoom quality. Also, colour science...

The Fuji is better at being a compact fixed lens and I own it. But the fact that this one is smaller and has a zoom lens makes it more suitable for certain situations. You will get better results composing at the right focal length with 17mp and a M4/3 sensor than trying to crop out a 35mm equivalent apsc into a 70mm framing with the Fuji. The lens on the Fuji is soft for what I’ve notice since I had it. Nonetheless they are both totally different cameras for different purpose or requirements.

They need to make this camera body with an M43 lens mount. There would be nothing like it in the m43 market, and would sell like hot cakes. It would be what so many in the m43 community is looking for. This looks like a good camera still though.

Yes, and with a backside illuminated sensor. That would improve low light performance. Leica has m4/3 lenses. Unfortunately, from my perspective Leica seems preoccupied with the hipster crowd. That crowd is fad/personal image conscious. A pancake lens for the hipsters and a range of longer focal lengths for wildlife or sports photographers that want to look hip when on vacation or shooting street photography for personal enjoyment.

@ianforber 4 месяца назад
@@GastonShutters If it’s m4/3 I assume the apertures are roughly twice that of full frame, eg f1.7 is actually f2.8. I don’t have any problem with that - a constant aperture f2.8 lens on my Olympus EM5 Mk2 was great and gave me plenty of control over depth of field for subject separation. Or is the lens constructed such that the aperture of f1.7 really is a full frame equivalent of f1.7?

@petegleeson1
@petegleeson1 2 месяца назад
@@ianforberThis is true and not true, the aperture is the aperture, a separate light meter suggesting 1/60 at f1.7 will get correct exposure regardless of the camera being digital, analogue, full frame, medium format or 1 inch sensor, providing the ISO is constant. The way the lens represents the scene, such as depth of field will be different according to format but it is not true to say f1.7 on M43 is anything other than f1.7. The image may look compared to a 35mm sensor like a f3 as far as depth of field goes.

Quality of DNG is amazing. DR has great recoverability in highlights and shadows. Optical Image quality same as D Lux 7. Good enough. Similar quality to Fuji X100VI at 35mm minus the depth of field of an apsc sensor. Small Primes will be better than small zoom in my opinion. But having the full range equivalent to 22-68mm in a camera slightly larger than the Ricoh GRIII is awesome

I am french and I own the D-Lux 8 since july 2. The camera is what I expected and the quality and ergonomics are as good as described here and there. What strucks me is the TOTAL LACK of ergonomics relatively to the zoom. - No restauration of a saved zoom position when the camera is reactivated. - No display of the zoom position. To know the zoom position, you must activate the W/T button. But activating the button changes the zoom position 😵‍💫. - No possibility to choose a step-zoom (24-28-35-50… positions) - No possibility to parameter the middle lens ring as a zoom ring. I repeat… Leica has completely obliterated the zoom ergonomics. More than that, it has erased the zoom ergonomics that existed on the D-Lux 7. Who knows wy ???
