In this episode - Chris struggles to fight his inner hipster. With a Leica in hand and a messenger bag around his shoulder, Chris finds himself in a trendy part of town only known by those who were there before it became cool. In a town full of character - will Chris be able to understand the true meaning of the rusted artistic nature? Stay tuned to find out!
I dunno, someone who goes for faded lettering instead of nice shadows on a white picket fence - chasing kitty cats instead of a designer chair... I'm not mad. Just disappointed.
So having been a Nikon, Fujifilm, and Leica shooter. Both Film and Digital. I'll tell you straight up that Leica is not the highest technological advanced high performance camera available to the prosumer community. In fact Sony's Alpha series ( A7- A9) are the "best" in terms of specs. It's so full of specs and advances, you can operate it like a smart phone camera but get A+++ grade results. Sony is on the road to dominating the Nikon and Canon user base. Having said that, Leica is my preferred choice. I'm confident in my skill set that I can create the same images with any of these camera. The process is just different. is the process worth the cost. For me, yes. The rangefinder format is what I'm most comfortable with, and enjoy the most. Before anyone starts saying "Rangefinders are outdated and inefficient in today's commercial industry", I'll agree with technological advancements it is not the most efficient way to shoot. However, it is still effective and you can still make the photo. I can manual focus faster than some autofocus camera's out there, and so can many other photographers out there. Going back to the process, the way you get to an image may not effect the quality of that particular image, but it is the process of photography and makes a person a better photographer; in which inspires them to continue to shooting. Sony, Canon, and Nikon are amazing companies with amazing performing products. They celebrate and goal themselves on the technological advancements of photography. Leica, Hasselblad, Voigtlander are artisan companies that celebrate the art and heritage of photography which is just as important as the tech side. With that, they offer amazing craftsmanship, quality, and homage to where the art came from. Their products demand more user interaction and thought process. Leica also still manufactures film cameras! Which is amazing! And Fujifilm, well, they are caught somewhere in the middle haha. They are killing off the "film" part of Fujifilm which is a bummer, but the flagship X-Pro2 and XT-2 are clear homages to Japanese cult classic cameras... cough* CONTAX G2 cough* CONTAX RTS cough* In the end, shoot what makes you shoot more!
I have the same with Nikon for digital and Pentax for analog. They're simply the best and when I finally make enough money I will probably award myself with a Leica M3. I borrowed it from a friend and just made me fall in love. The way it feels in the hands is just... divine.
Nice one Chris! Always enjoy your channel. We started our channel 6 months ago and M10 was one of our first reviews and got a lot of inspirations from you guys. Nic to hear others enjoying this camera. Many doesn't get the unique experience of shooting a rangefinder :) Keep it up and will continue to support you guys! Cheers (from London), Jimmy
I need to find my own 'Jordan' and a fuzzy lav for my vids...... and if you want to shoot another hipster-gentrified-alleyway video, come to Vancouver. On a serious note, I'm glad you picked out the same small things I found, both the good and not so good.
Yeah my first thought was that they haven't been to Gastown. Also a team-up video between you and TCS in Van would be awesome, start off at Revolver and see where your feet take you.
Both this and the Camway video are really some of the most clever rewatchable camera videos online - Chris has been extremely hilarious lately. Keep up the good work gentleman.
At first I was bummed this wasn't a GH5 video... but I'm glad Jordon is getting some hands-on time first. The internet has plenty of half-baked reviews. Y'all's are always worth waiting for. Also this video ended up being hilarious. Chris, you poking fun at your photography style never gets old and I loved the neighborhood you guys explored in this one. Keep up the great work.
Completely uninterested in this camera, considering I just bough a Sony A9, but "...and I now find myself in this eerie ring of hay-balls, a children's glove, right there, put aside, strangely placed orange pylons and otherwise this quiet desolation, and so now I'm going to permeate it with the sound of this Leica M10 Shutter" is one of the most hilarious sentences I've ever heard. Watching this review for the entertainment is well worth it. Love you guys.
Interesting camera review . Chris / Jordan I appreciate your honest and Corky thoughts on each review... I like the fact that you guys list the equipment used for each episode. Keep It Fun - I'm always waiting for the next one.
Very fun video. Loved the lane-way shot with the vanishing point behind Chris's head. Loved it when Chris said "very difficultly" and when he missed the kitty shot. Loved all the playful unexpected moments. And I totally did NOT notice that fuzzy spot in the middle of the left side. ;-)
Really enjoyed watching the video and someone just walking around with the M10 taking pictures with it is very relaxing and informative. I use an M2, would I like an M10? Yes, can I afford it? No. I will have to wait 5+ years before they become cheaper on the secondhand market.
Great video, guys! The serendipity of your finds, while reviewing a Leica, are almost too much. I'd enjoy seeing more videos like this with unsung cameras gone by. Maybe in Inglewood?
I don't think you get "parallax" at closer distances, just a slight crop. Parallax is corrected all the way you can focus, but focus breathing isn't corrected for so the frame underestimates the image are at infinity and overestimates at shortest distance. Super nice video thanks :)
Thanks for posting this. I was a little tired of reading the same a9 news over and over today. a9, Leica, the same thing in term of the fact I can't afford. Then I much prefer seeing Chris!! Missed you Jordan!!
Shooting a gentrifying neighbourhood (stealthily complaining about the fact it's gentrifying) using a rich person's toy of a camera. The irony is palpable.
Maybe I'll check it out but I really like your reviews the most. Calm, no nonsense, actually showing issues and advantages, my type of humor...and I am being serious here...no need for *** licking.
Haha your best video so far Chris. Very funny and informative. I had the chance to try an m10 and it's true that it captures the feel of the classic Leicas. I shoot an M6 as my daily driver and if I had the money I would surely get the m10.
Great work again! Even for cameras I have no intention of buying, the videos are always engaging and entertaining. One question: What lens(es) did you use with the GH5?
Hey, I am currently using a smartphone for photography. Now I am planning to upgrade my camera. I am get a great deal on leica C-lux camera at around USD$650. I primarily want to do landscape, macro photography & lite vlogging. Do I go for this deal or not. Please let me know ????
Is that some sort of abandoned place? or is this how places are in Canada. Looking at that school and buildings in background gave me the chilling feel of Post Chernobyl Pripyat.
I'm always amazed at the venom that comes out when Leica is discussed. Leica cameras existed long before hipsters came into existence and will be here long after the term is no longer relevant. If you enjoy shooting without autofocus then borrow or rent a Leica and see if it works for you. Please don't talk about price because there are many who complain about Leica and who have thousands and thousands of dollars of cameras and lenses sitting around that they do not use. If you have a Leica you really only need a decent 35mm lens to achieve fantastic results. But you have to love working with the limitations that this puts on you. You will become a better photographer with limitations rather than with all the technology in the world. But then you can also get great results from a camera that costs $100 if you have the talent.
Exactly. Most of the greatest photographers of the 20th Century used a Leica camera, a single prime lens and shot "hipster shit" and street/documentary photography. A lot of digital photographers really need to read a few photo books and have their perspective on photography altered.
Nice review as usual. I almost choked from laughing at 10:40...but you are apparently very accurate with the statement! Is it true there will be an M10 Monochrom in May/June in keeping with their historic product refreshing of 3 yrs?
Just had an opportunity to use this camera for several hours the other day I gotta say it was really nice. However, it is not worth 1/4th of the asking price. If Fujifilm put out the same camera at the same cost, they're be laughed out the door and no one will buy one. People justify the cost by calling it the "Leica experience", just another form of Cognitive bias. The only thing Leica M series can claim to be better over its competitors is its build quality, that's it. I get it, its a rich man's toy and I'm not their target audience blah blah but there is no denying there is a hoard of clueless photographers out there who blindly worship the Leica name and dream about one day owning one. Some of these clueless people do go onto own one and perpetuate the myths surrounding the camera, feeding the vicious cycle. Why can't reviewers see past the Leica name and price and straight up compare it against the competitors and tell us if its any good? Well of course they won't because Leica will lose in almost every department and it will shatter the carefully crafted illusion.
i have fujis (few) and there is no comparison in quality; Fuji is good copier though but photos of Leica are a few notches above Fuji plus the whole process of taking the picture; if you doubt care about the process simply can use puny phones
Fuji will never bring a camera like this. Totally different philosophies. That's why Leica is special and the is such thing as a Leica experience. Because there is and will never be another digital camera out there, that's like a Leica.
Going back through my picture collection, my best work was taken with a Leica 50 years ago. You can get into Leica photography for a modest outlay. Some of the ultra-cheap Soviet lenses give good results.
@Marion Basilio I used to have a M240 and a A7RIII. I loved the ease of use of the Leica. And I didn't like Sony's menues even if it's features were great. I had issues of focus with the Leica... and issues of breakdowns with the Sony. So I sold all my FF gears and currently I only use a GX8 with pleasure. And if I had to change, I won't buy a FF Canon, Nikon, Sony or Leica any more, but probably the G9.
exactly but since most people are simply bad at math they do not realize that all the money they spend every year on shit crapp cameras upgrading and multiple cameras which are never used they could buy not only one Leica but fe leeches over a lifetime period (but you really need just one)
If I buy a Leica, I still need to buy other Cameras that actually have AF or telephoto lenses. If I buy a much cheaper Canon or Nikon that can also last me decades, I don't have to buy another camera to do that stuff and vlog.
The Leica Visoflex for the M10 is entirely different and of higher resolution than the old Olympus EVF used on the M240: using the Olympus EVF is not an option and has nothing to do with buying a Leica branded accessory.
I'm not familiar with Leica's qualities, so besides the high labour cost in Germany to manufacture those lenses and bodies, what explains the very high cost of Leica's products?
what explains the very high cost of Leica's products?" -- There is nothing else like it on the market. There are no true all-mechanical rangefinders anymore. If you want one, you have no choice. Also, you do pay for the name. Very good brand management, like Rolex.
Finishing process is made in Germany, so that's what Made in Germany really means! Here you go with a M9 pay attention at 0:53: (vimeo.com/6551861) you can see at what stage a Leica M9 arrives from Portugal to Germany facilities and check for yourself what they add to it
try using it and then your mind will just go crazy for one; the satisfaction is unreal when producing a picture unlike fuji, nikon and canon it is a different pleasure and it is not because of the cost for sure
I almost didn't watch this video because of my disdain of the typical pretentious Leica shooter/owner but I'm glad I did. Your commentary was hilarious, especially with the urine soaked chair hahaha
They are 'good cameras' and great lenses, but no where near as flawless as the sunk cost fanboys insist. _Sure this Voigtlaender has better edge to edge sharpness, less distortion and costs 1/10th of the Summilux it competes with: but it lacks that super real and not a cop-out " Leica Micro contrast®" ... Leica still wins_
the switch should not be an issue, just use an acronym eg: "white is right" ( to shoot); and "red is dead"- aka like the empty battery icon on the display.
