This is something I wanted to check since I use Leica Summilux 50/1.4 with my Sony A7RIII cameras - would it perform any different on actual Leica camera? Thanks to Leica Store Warsaw I got to test out Leica M10-R and make head to head comparison, and since I had Sony 50/1.2 GM I added this to the mix.

I shoot with an M240 and a Sony a7riii. Definitely a time and place for each. The Sony can do anything but doesn’t necessarily inspire me to shoot. The Leica is more limited yet I want to use it and have it on me all the time

Spot on! I will eventually retire my a7RIIIs and get the 7IVs. One point for me is strange that you don't use is the APSC-C crope mode. I use it all the time with my 35mm lens to make it 50ish so I don't need to crop in post and can compose it in camera. Love your vids!

I find these comparisons so necessary. I look at the Leica system like my buddy’s obsession with the 1987-1980 Porsche 911. They are incredibly fun to drive. Being able to feel the road through the mechanical feedback is exhilarating, the manual transmission feedback makes you feel like you’re apart of the road. You can feel the tires grip a little better, hell, I don’t know, maybe that’s my interpretation of the romance of driving a classic, the smell of the oil and gas, the fact that when you break you really have to give it a good stomp. It’s sad many will never know that feeling. It’s similar when I occasionally shoot film and in a time of modern cameras, Leica continue to merge classic with modern. People always go to comparing price and mock Leica, pretty sure I’ve done that before. Shit, now I’m that old fart that babbling on and on. Lol

The difference in sharpness when using Leica lenses on Leica vs Sony is supposed to show up in the corners, not on the image center, so the comparison is unfortunately incomplete. It is very hard to judge the corners when the lens is set at 1.4 and everything behind and in front of the model is out of focus. With a wide lens the difference is supposedly even more visible. It would also be useful for the audience to see an unedited raw file comparison in Lightroom so they can judge the color differences for themselves before you edit the files.
@MagicWeddingPhotographer

Watch out; the corner patrol is in the house. We all know the most important parts of an image are the extreme corners. Corners or not, bottom line is that all these lenses perform extremely well and you don't need to see the corners to know this. And it's not like he is evaluating these 50mm lenses for use in landscape or architectural shots.

I love your approach. I sold my Leica gear last year. I loved the romance of the camera, but found that I was shooting at f8 a lot, just so I could get the shot. I like the Sony f1.2 GM, but it’s pretty heavy. I will be selling that. I have the new Sony f1.4 GM and that’s the Goldilocks lens for me. Although, I think my favourite all round lens is the Sony 40mm. It would be better with a larger aperture, but I do like the size and weight. Anyway, great job.

I had been using a Sony A7Rii for quite some time. Typically with manual focus glass like Voigtlander. I picked up a beat up original Q for comparison... And what immediately blew me away was the color, for sure. The lens is great across the board... But as someone who doesnt want to spend my time editing, that leica color science has me absolutely sold. Will definitely get the M10r eventually. This video further confirmed that for me.

Nowadays sensor tech is so good that you only see differences in the "fringe" cases. The clear difference is the experience of shooting with a rangefinder AND with shooting manual. I noticed you got a lot closer to your subject and filled the frame. For this reason alone, the Summilux images were better than the Sony G-Master. Perhaps manual focus is more your thing? G-Master is just ridiculous in terms of size. I would never shoot with something like that.

Interesting enough. I thought the Sony/Sony combo did best. I shoot Nikon now & I’m thinking of trying Sony because of their AF system & to play with some video. But I must admit, I lust for a Leica. A better comparison would of been your all Sony combo vs a Leica SL with SL glass.. I would really like to see a SOOC comparison showing contrast & colors. I say Sony sets the standard for FF cameras these days, pushing others to try & keep up!

@@liferoundhere yup, close down your lens, it happens when the lens flares a lot and too much light hits the inside of the body at a weird angle and the arm causes a square shaped shadow.

With some practice it's really easy to focus with with the Leica M. I just use it one weddings since 5 years. For me I am sometimes faster and more accurate than autofocus on some other cameras. The Summilux is really easy to focus. and there is the option to adapt an EVF on the Leica M.
@MagicWeddingPhotographer

The EVF would be tempting. Do you use it? How useable is it? I’ll still gonna practice or film I guess when I get my hands on M6. Not evf for this one 😂

@@MagicWeddingPhotographer Yes I use it frequently. It's really helpful especially with fast lenses like the Summilux or the Noctilux which I use a lot for Weddings. But just know I am so familiar with focusing of rangefinder I don't need the EVF... the more you practice the better you become...
@MB-or8js
@MB-or8js 3 года назад
For equal focusing at f/1.4, you would have needed the Viscoflex external EVF for the Leica M10-R. Using 50 mm M lenses and longer ones is no problem on Sony MLCs. The problems occur at some adapted 35 mm and shorter M lenses with magenta color casts und blurriness in the edges on Sony sensors. The cover glass of Sony sensors is much thicker than the one on Leica digital M cameras causing steeper light refraction in the corners of the frame with wider lenses and causing the issue. I am using Leica M and Sony A7R in parallel. Only using my A7R with adapted third party lenses including M lenses.

@MB-or8js
@MB-or8js 3 года назад
Rule of thumb from my experience: the faster the M lens, the better it will work on Sony sensors - tele lenses normally all work fine even at slower speeds. This is because the rear lens element of faster lenses is larger in diameter that the light beam refraction on the sensor will be less steep than with slower lenses. Exemption is the Leica 35/2 ASPH M lens, version I: severe focus shift on Sony sensors with always blurry corners even when stopped down. It must have to do with the specific ASPH design. I sold this lens and bought the predecessor as mentioned above, the 35/2 pre-ASPH vers. IV. It works excellent on Sony sensor and on my Leica Ms.

That was great, really enjoyed watched & educational too! I agree with your thought process - re processing your RAW's from each & comparing those - it's what you end up with at the end of the day which is important. I was on the Canon Eos system for very nearly 3 decades before getting an A7R3 at the end of 2017. I don't have a Summilux (yet!) but do have a range of other manual focus glass, including a few old Leica's (a 1938 Elmar, & a Summaron). I've been 'thinking' about Leica M10's for the past 18 months, but in March 2020 ended up adding a GFX 50r to use alongside my A7R3.....but that has not stopped me still looking at M10's!! I’m a Leica MP film shooter but when I shoot digital, I mount my Leica lenses on my Nikon mirrorless camera. I dont think Leica digital cameras are worth the money. For the Leica experience, I’ll continue to shoot my Leica MP.

You know, in these settings I'm a cheapskate, so instead of getting a M6 for fun-and-games-experimenting I got an old Voightländer R2. Not really the same mechanical feeling, but close enough for Fun&Games. Which probably is all analog film photography is gonna be for me!

please make a SOOC (straight out of camera) comparison, otherwise this test isn't nearly as useful as it could be. contrast and color rendering can break or make a lens using each camera's "camera standard" profile in lightroom. if you craft a look in post, we can't see how the lens is truly performing.

i think the stretching on the sony is happening due to the sensor size of sony. leica lenses match the film size and similar sensor on leica digitals. sony sensors does not match up with film sizes.

It looks like you have to turn off electric front curtain on Sony, or opposite, i don't remember :-) But I saw a couple of times that there is some problems with bokeh on a lenses with very wide aperture. It cuts half of bokeh balls. And i see this half of circle in bokeh balls on some of these photos. Anyway, really good reviews, and good channel! Good luck with it ;-)

Leica is special yes :D maybe go for m10 used, you have great deals and in a long run cheaper than film camera, while keeping experience of shooting film. I love it as my hobby cam :D here on vacation I took leica m10 and sony a1 with me and first few days when I had time I was shooting leica all the time, than when I went to the jungle and a boat I left my leica in safe and took my a1 who is built for shit like this :D I can send show you photos on an Ig if you want. Btw beautiful comparison of those two cameras and editing to match them.

the bokeh on the Leica f/1.4 is smoother than the Sony f/1.2 GM. I am surprised
@cosmosex3572
@cosmosex3572 3 года назад
The bokeh in the 50GM photos was heavily deteriorated by the electronic front curtain shutter. The manual mentions: "When you shoot at high shutter speeds with a large-aperture lens attached, out-of-focus circle produced by the bokeh effect may get cut off because of the shutter mechanism. If this happens, set [e-Front Curtain Shut.] to [Off]".

The Leica SL Summilux is even better than the M Summilux, and easily the greatest 50mm ever made, I used to be a sony shooter and while yes, you are paying insane money for Leica, the results speak for themselves, especially when you are accustom to shooting with them.
@princeharbinger

@@cosmosex3572 You're right. I wish they would update the cameras to have a auto feature that would turn it off whenever you reach a high shutter speed. I guess you could likely counter having to raise it using a ND CPL filter, or a regular ND filter. I really hope I don't have to wait until September to get my copy. I ordered mine in early April.

@@CryoftheProphet It's a shame that lens you mentioned isn't as compact as the one that is shown in the video. I'd like a Leica lens one day to adapt to my Sony camera. However after doing a lot of comparison research between different 50mm leica lenses. I'm finding it hard to find one that has nice bokeh rendering that would justify the asking price.
@JLeoH

Even 50mm lenses have a noticeable falloff on Sony cameras due to the Sony sensor glass (very thick!). 35mm lenses and wider lenses completely fall apart on Sony E-mount. The use of M glass on Sony E-mount cameras has caused a large amount of false information Leica M glass' quality. If you want to get the best results on mirrorless cameras with Leica M glass, you need to go for Leica L mount (SL, S1, S5) or Nikon Z. M -cameras still have better corner performance. Sony works best with retroflex designs such as Leica R. That is due to the nature of the sensor and the angle in which the light hits the sensor.
@robiulahmed

I suppose it's swings and roundabouts, since Leica M cameras totally fall apart with anything beyond 75mm due to the archaic focusing system.

I bought my first Leica, an M3 with DR Summicron, when I was seventeen. Leicas are fabulous cameras. I recently sold my entire collection of Leica gear (a Q, SL, M3, M6, and six lenses) and switched to Sony, largely because of the influence of a longtime friend who is one of the Sony artisans and is himself a former Leica shooter. Sony’s new GM lenses designed for both sharpness AND bokeh - for which many (though not all) Leica lenses are famous - was, together with Sony’s legendary autofocus - was enough to push me over the edge. When my @1 or a1 or A1 arrives, I’ll let you know how I think they compare.

The Leica M lens has been designed to operate on an M body with a Flange Focal Distance (FFD) of 27.80mm. On the Sony you add an additional mechanical part (adapter ring) between the lens and the body. This will add an uncertainty of at least a tenth of a mm, sufficient to modify the FFD and move the focal point. This is the eternal problem of adapting M lenses to a Sony camera. This makes this comparison inadequate and worthless. Instead, put on a good Zeiss lens designed for this camera and the results will be much better.
