Over the last 15 years I've had the opportunity to travel all over the world. This Leica M8.2 (follow up to the popular Leica M8) has been with me for 12 of those years. It has been around the world a number of times. Take a walk with me in some Irish woodland on a rainy day.
This is my first time in front of camera but if you like what you see here let me know in the comments. I plan to publish more videos in the near future.

Thanks for the kind comment. I’m glad you enjoyed the nature. It does feel special when you’re wandering around these preserved places. I just wish we’d more unspoiled woodlands. This week coming I’ll hopefully publish a video from France with the m8 again. Just boarding the ferry home 🤣

Jan, thanks for commenting. Well I’ve had the 28mm 2.8 biogon and the 50mm f2 planar for twelve years. I’ve never had any build quality issues with them. Image wise I love the colours but then again I’ve not had the pleasure of shooting Leica glass so I can’t compare truly. It’s hard to imagine I’d want more from two lenses. The 28mm is great for environmental portraits and has surprisingly nice fall off for f2.8. For walk around street photos I’ve it stopped down to f8 or f11 and it’s super sharp. Lovely colours on both lenses. The 50 planar people say is overly clinical. I disagree to be honest. It’s a super sharp lens for sure but for portraits it has lovely out of focus areas. One lens i want to try is the 50mm 1.5 sonar as it looks like it’s tons of character with its know. Flaws. I may look for one on the used market sometime this year. Let me know what lens in particular you’re considering and I’d you’d like me to do a video on my zeiss lenses! Also I know paul c smith photographer uses the 28mm on his m8.

Wow, looks like you were really enjoying shooting in the forest! As I'm a new Leica owner, is it ok to shoot in the rain? No concerns about moisture entering the camera or lens? I'm just curious and I know that Leica's have been in hard use in war zones etc. TIA. Also, your photos are really beautiful!
@colinosullivan
@colinosullivan Год назад
Hi John, thats for commenting. This sort of forest made up of native trees we do not have enough of due to over farming but this one due to its odd position and elevation means it has remained intact. It's a real gem. If it is a light mist I'll use the M8 no worries. in between shots I might tuck it under my armpit (sounds odd), or under ,y billngham to just stop excess on it. If it's a little heavier. I will leave my billngham bag top unlatched and take it out for the shot, wipe it quickly and return it to the bag. I leave lens caps off all the time so I'm ready. This particular forest has a massive canopy so would you believe basically 0 drops on the camera! I tend to find the M cameras are a LOTTTT tougher than marketed, I guess they don't want to risk loads of returns but I've always found them fine tbh. In all out rain, I don't nother risking it. In my next video (due out tonight) you'll see I use a Leica film camera and tbh it was soaked! I mean soaked. I would not do that to a digital M :) I hope you check back for my video on Vienna. Let me know what you think. Cheers,

why do you have a hot mirror filter? is it modified to see IR or something?
@colinosullivan
@colinosullivan Год назад
Hey mate, the m8.2 and m8 all had a not so effective infrared cut filter on the sensor. So as I was shooting greens 🌳 in this video I used an IR cut filter from Hoya just to let the greens appear more natural, without to some of them tend to go slightly yellow. Tbh I leave off the IR cut filter mostly and I just love the black and white conversions off this. I hope this answers your question. A few more videos on the way to subscribe if you enjoyed this one. Cheers

Do you use an it cut filter on your m8.2?
@colinosullivan
@colinosullivan Год назад
Thanks for commenting. For years I didn’t actually. But I got a filter then for my 50mm to sort out black fabrics turning brown and foliage turning yellow. But I used to often shoot with the intention of black and white, in which case I found the conversions to look a lot nicer without the filter. Also plenty times I’d forget to put it on and I still love the results. I’d say it’s good to have the filters if you want perfectly accurate colours but I’d suggest trying it without for fun. Hope you stick around for more videos. Cheers

As someone who recently swapped out all his Canon DSLR gear (and more) to scratch the M8 itch that had been gnawing at me since seeing the image quality of the similar CCD sensored DMR module for the R8/9. I loved this. I don’t know if you are new to the M8 or other searches had already led you there but you might like to check out Paul Smith’s channel ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uKUIoQxKqds.html He posts quite a lot with the M8 and M9 as well as film and, for my tastes, has the highest ‘hit rate’ of all the many photographers I watch on here. By which I mean, images I could have on my wall and look at a lot. In fact, I have put my money where my mouth is and recently bought one of his superb prints, taken on a M8. I think you might find it interesting.

Thanks for the comment. The ccd is a gem, even in Ireland’s dark winters I manage to make it work most of the time. Let me know how you’re getting on with the m8. Where are you located?

@@colinosullivan Ah, so you (he) beat me to it! Still, hopefully others here who hadn’t come across him might do now. I watch his videos again and again as a way to relax! I’m in England and have mostly taken landscape, floral and architectural photographs mostly on film (35mm to 4”x5”) hence the interest in the M8. A decade ago I very nearly bought an R9 with DMR and always regretted not doing. Seeing the images Thorsten von Overgaard made with it (and the M9) was the key, coming from years with Kodachrome. BTW - do you find the UV filter necessary? So far I haven’t even bought one and haven’t found any issues.
@colinosullivan
@colinosullivan 2 года назад
@@kronkite1530 hey mate, it’s an IR cut filter to compensate for the m8 lack of IR cut layer. For a decade I shot without it and for black and white it was perfect. It’s when you’ve greens where it sort of gets a browny yellowy muddy look. Blacks appear sort of purple. That was easy to recover in Lightroom. Greens not so much. I’ve some of my favourite shots without it ! But for the photos in this video it’s on it hence I get the true to life colours. Here in France I’ve been shooting with the ir cut filter on even though with the heatwave and fires there ain’t much Irish greens! You’ll see for yourself when I publish these French videos. England has some lovely areas to photograph. I spend quite a bit of time in the york area and it’s stunning.
@kronkite1530
@kronkite1530 2 года назад
@@colinosullivan Yes, I know, a hurried post and for some reason UV was in my head - probably the colour of the filter! I’ve heard the extra IR sensitivity helps the bw images, adding tonality is the story. As said, I’ve not used an ir cut filter yet and haven’t seen any muddy greens compared to my CL or previous Canon and Sony models, or even purple tinged blacks . Though haven’t done much indoor / low light photography with it. I might get one and see if I can spot a difference.
@colinosullivan
@colinosullivan 2 года назад
@@kronkite1530 you’ll notice it just not in every photo. Definitely Irish forest greens. Also autumn photos without it can be cool. Yes the black and whites are unreal but nothing beats film haha
