Gracias Ivan, cuanto tiempo! La M8 es la leche y no necesitas la M9, te lo aseguro. Lo bueno de tener las dos es que vas cambiando y que algunas lentes como el 50 o 90mm le van algo mejor a la M9 por tamaño sensor, pero prefiero como va el 28mm en la m8 que en la M9 por ejemplo. Al final son pequeñeces, la M8 es como dices una bestia.

Just found your channel, it’s great content! I have been shooting rangefinders for almost 20 years but I only got my first Leica (M4) about 2 years ago. I’m thinking about getting a M9. Anyways, looking forward to seeing more videos

Hi Hugo. Again another excellent video, congrats! I've got also both an M8 and an M9. After getting the M9 I was thinking in buying the M8, but now I use both. Last June I visited Wetzlar and the M8 was the "travel camera". By the way, I live in Oviedo and next September I'll spend two weeks in Marbella. It would be great to meet you there and drink a pair of beers if you don't mind!

Hi Hugo, great to see another video from you. I also wonder if the color difference is due to the lens, but in any case a very interesting comparison. Your sister (so beautiful!) makes a very good point about these cameras, that making images with them demands engagement and involvement and gives you a sense of achievement and reward when you succeed. That is part of their attraction i believe. More videos soon I hope.
Hi As 2, and thanks for your comment. Yes, this cameras has something everybody likes, also kids, when they learn how to focus them. My sister has experience in photography, also participate in a few contests with good results, but she is use to DSLR cameras and this Leica’s are different.
Hi Hugo, thank you once again for gifting us with another good video. I enjoyed it very much. 1.) I was thing about the warmth of the M8 especially since I use Zeiss ZM lenses and they tend to render in a warm way. Where I live, i feel some colors like green aren’t too pleasing when they’re too warm. But overall I like the “film look” to them because if it’s unique and I think i prefer them much to Sony A7ii. 2.) Going through my filters I found a few ND filters that I used to use w my film RF’s but I hardly use them now bec of the M8’s high shutter speed- what a big bonus. 3.) on UV IR filters I’ve leaned that when I don’t use them, I always regret. But because they’re expensive (and I need 2-3 new ones) I’ll be trying out the cheaper ICE brand instead of B+W. Have you tried these? Thanks again for your post
Thanks clipsTL for your interesting comment. I always use a UV ir filter in the M8, and always the same, a old Leica IR UV filter ref 13410. I can use it in my 3 leica lenses, Summicron 50, elmarit 28 and elmarit 90, and is great. I’m in London for a few days with the m9 and the Elmarit 28, lets see what comes!
My Leica M8 the benefits of standardized filter threads of Leica! I need a 43mm and 46mm for my setup of the ZM 35 c-biogon and the ZM 25 biogon. Now I just got a ZM 50 Planar that also needs a 43mm. I have one 46mm B+W UV IR that I’ve been using with all these lenses with a step up ring but it’s becoming too cumbersome (and it sticks to the step up pretty hard) so I got these budget UV IR filters. Let’s see how they render black fabrics. Build quality from what I can tell is less than B+W but that’s not that big a deal since I use a lens shade for protection. I’ll report on how they perform :)
clipsTL, I’m thinking in buy a Zeiss sonnar 50 1.5, What you think? I want a light 50mm to take everywhere, my silver Summicron is a beat to heavy for my taste.
@@myleicam8546 Hi Hugo, I was considering that lens but I ended up getting the Planar 50 instead. I wanted a 50 that could be very versatile (even performance at all apertures; the Sonnar focus shifts). The Sonnar is definitely smaller but not that much lighter. One lens I was considering but could not find was the old Voigtlander 50/2.5 Skopar which looks excellent but getting rare and expensive on the used market. @@myleicam8546 BTW I tried these cheap filters and they work to render black fabric black. They are lighter and feel less solid than B+W but the glass fits snugly (no wobble) and they are thinner and lighter.
Outstanding video - very cute A/B testing. I love your relaxing way of telling. And if it wasn´t for the cropsensor I would go for the M8. So I think I´ll end up with a M9 together with my M6. Cheers from Denmark

Hi Lasse, I hope you recover soon from the Covid! I watch your video and enjoy a lot your photos, great work, excellent images, a pleasure!! Congratulations. The M8 don't suffer from corrosion issues, is a very solid camera, may be the weakest point is the shutter. In the M8 (version 1) goes up to 1/8000 and it can be the reason. In the M8.2 they change it and it goes up to 1/4000. Al the best and take care!

your comparisons are great Hugo! You have no idea how long it took me to take a decision between investing what for me is a lot of money on an M9 or an M8. I'm super happy with my M8 since a few months now, but always look at the 9 thinking if it would have been a better choise, but I'm more and more convinced my chiose was right. There's literally nothing I miss on the 8, not megapixels, not in image quality. Thanks and keep it up! Maybe buy an M240 and show us some differences there ahahah ; )
Hello Andrea, I needed a M9 to understand how great is the M8. Both cameras are exceptional but in my opinion an M8 is all you need to make good photos and enjoy photography. Thanks for your comment!

Thank you for this really nice video. I love my M9 and my pictures are not that cold as in your video. I think the most important decision between M9 and M8 is the crop sensor of the M8. If you don't need that high resolution and you could live with the 1.3 factor, the M8 is a perfect intrance into the Leica system. But be aware, the famous "Leica look" derives mainly from the (expensive) Leica lenses...
Thanks jörn, I think is not that the M9 has a cold look, is only when you compare the images with the M8 ones. I agree, M8 is the perfect entrance entrance and the crop factor is not really a problem, at least for me. In fact I prefer to use the Elmarit 28 in the M8 that in the M9. And the Summicron 50 in the M9 that in the M8. They are two great cameras :-)
Me gusta, mucho. I am for the M8 also. Why the M9 did not get the same sensor tuned the same way I do not understand at all. Those folks in Wetzlar leave me confused very often. Thanks for a good video and and good comparison.
Hugo someone mentioned your channel in the Leica group - your video is very insightful. I love my M9-P but I’m interested in a M8. I wonder what settings (M9/M8) you had when you made this video? I noted what you said - the lens has influence in the colors but I gotta say that I prefer the colors that spit out from the M8. What I found out is the M8’s shutter speed goes up to 8000 vice M9 4000. I subscribed and liked the video. What a duo you and your sister make - she’s beautiful and charming. Thanks!
Thanks for your comment Charles, Im glad you find the video interesting. To me, the colors from the M8 are more pleasant, warmer and more unique that the ones in the M9, but when I see the photos from the M9, I find them also charming and unique. Only when comparing them it become noticeable. The M8 shutter goes up to 8000, in the M8.2, goes up to 4000. I suspect this is because the shutter is the weakest point in the original M8, and is may be because the high speed. In the M8.2 is more conservative. But is just a theory.
Hola Hugo, thank you for sharing your experiences about the rendering of those two "classic" camera's. Although the perspective will be different try swapping the lenses as the colour reproduction of Leica and Voigtlander can be different due to the lens coatings. Another good video Hugo, it may just be the Elmarit lens but I prefer the look of the images from the M8, nice warm colour with just the right amount of saturation. I still use my M8 as much as my M9 and as I feel at the moment don’t think I will part with it. Please keep posting the videos and can we have your very pretty sister in them 🙂.
Hello Geoff, I’m sure the Elmarit influence the result, as well as the camera does. I’m in the same situation as you, finding my self using the two cameras a lot. This summer the M9 will travel with me to London, with the Elmarit 28 and a Summicron 50 :-)
My Leica M8 Hi Hugo, hope you have a good trip to London, you should get plenty of photo opportunities there. I was wondering if you are a member of the Leica users forum, if not it’s worth joining, there’s plenty of members in the London area who could give you tips on good areas for photography.

The M8 looks like Kodachrome film. The M9 looks like Ektachrome film. Yes, more contrast in B&W M9 images. Nice image comparison. I have owned the M8 2x. Had to sell twice due to life events. Just bought/ordered another M8 for the 3rd time. It’s in poor condition compared to the other one’s I’ve owned; but it will always be in my bag everyday until I find an M8.2 (my favorite of all time) in good condition/price. Cheers!
My Leica M8 I’m using the Summarit-M 35mm 2.4 ASPH on my M4-P. When I receive the M8 in the mail I will use that until I find a Zeiss Biogon 28mm 2.8 at a good price. And sell the Summarit 35mm. ;)

Te estoy muy agradecido, hacía muchos años que quería probar el sistema M y pensé que me iba a decepcionar, pero ha sido todo lo contrario: disfruto el doble con la M8 que con mi Nikon D810 o mi Fuji XH1... que no son precisamente paquetillos. Pero lo mejor es la óptica... ¡Monto un 7artisans 35mm f2 que me ha costado 220 euros y es una maravilla! No quiero ni pensar qué saldría con un cristalito Leica. Hola Rafael, me alegro de que los videos te sean útiles. Los hago por el placer de compartir una afición. De otro modo no es sencillo encontrar personas en la cercanía con las que comentar estas cositas que tanto nos gustan sobre estas cámaras tan particulares. La M8 fue también para mi un descubrimiento, una vuelta a la fotografía pura en formato digital. La M9 es una evolución, por el sensor 35mm, en lo demás es parecida ..y como todo, al mejorar algunas cosas, otras se quedan en el camino. Para mi de momento es una segunda camara, no necesaria, pero que me permite variar, y saber que si algo le pasa a una me queda la otra. No conozco el 7artesano pero oigo maravillas. Llegará el día. Hello David, thanks for your comment. At the end decide to make a video like this one, just as a fun experiment, and in other video go more seriously into the comparation using, for example the Elmarit o Summicron in bought cameras.
Great video. Was the Voigtlander shot at f/2? There seems to be better subject isolation with that lens and I’m wondering if it was shot at f/1.4. Your sister is a sweetheart.
Thanks Michael Mangold, In most of the photos the Voigtlander was set at the same or smaller aperture to match the results in therms of DOF, but some of the images seems to be shot in wider apertures showing the effect you mention. Is very possible. Also the Voigtlander is a “isolation” machine, with very tridimensional images.
Thanks for sharing your findings although I think swapping lenses throughout the shoot would help judge if the differences in lenses affected the colors. Also shooting the images from the same position would make for better comparisons. I noticed in some she photographed you backlit while you photographed her front lit and that also affects the contrast and colors. Thank you again.
QNetX, thanks for your comment! Yes, I’m sure the lenses has an effect in the results, and also the daylight white balance may not be equal in the two cameras. Its just a general impression that shows the different camera stile.
I was really surprised how wonderful the colors and the contrast was on M8 photos. I wonder if it was still something in the settings.. M9 had some very sharp rendering and great clarity, but based on these example pictures (ceteris paribus) I would have chosen the M8.
Hi. for me was also a surprise when comparing for the first time the files. In general the M8 produce more pleasant colors directly from camera. M9 images sometimes are a beat greenish, but you can correct the WB and get a good result. Personally, I like the m8 DNG´s more.
In short, the M-8 is closest to Kodachrome I’ve seen digitally. The look is unique in digital format. The M-9 is sharper, more “spatial staging” and closer to all subsequent Leica M’s. If you want an M-10 but can’t afford, get the M-9. Me I want an M-8. (If I want to lay down $10K USD for a set-up, I’m going for Hasselblad 907X.

I have heard other reviewers talk about needing a IR Cut filter to get the colors correct on there as one was not built into the sensor. Do you find they are neded?
Is true, with the IR filters colors get more accurate, especially black. Without filter they look warmer, green trend to look yellowish sometimes, but if you don't need accuracy I recommend you to try sometimes, because results are unique.

I bought a M9, I have a bit problem that spoil me. Which is a buffer sometime you need to take off a battery and after a minute it will after a few shot.
Hello Uthman Affan, I had the same problem. After buying a dedicated SD card 16 GB for the camera never happened again. Also original batteries helps. The camera continue being slow but never froze again.

I got the Leica M10 in mint condition at a very good price and I agree with your sister Gabriela, to work with Leica M takes time to master it’s like “handcraft”. Hola Fernando, never have the opportunity to use a 240 but I’m sure is a step forward in technology and a great substitute for her predecessors. One day, may be! Also like the comments from my sister, was her first time shooting with Leica rangefinder after years using DSLR cameras and she enjoy the experience.
+1 on the “handcraft” comment/analogy of your sister. I think there really is some skill required like anticipation and estimation of distance and speed. Personally I think rangefinder photography engages / requires more of my brain than shooting with a compact (have a Ricoh GRii) or a mirrorless interchangeable leans system w AF (I have a Sony Alpha).
I fell the same, Is all in your hands, you make the photo with the camera, and exactly the same image will come with a analog Leica M6 or any other old film camera. Not many digital cameras do it this way, they think too much, they are smarter, like driving a car with self pilot. Is ok, but not what I want when going to a nice road to feel the experience of driving.

Podría hacerse con buena luz, porque necesitas disparar por lo menos a f8 (o a un ISO muy alto, que en estas cámaras no es recomendable) Cuando las condiciones lo permiten lo practico, pero también me gusta disparar a f2, y resaltar el objeto de interés desenfocando el resto. clipsTL, I’m only using the original Leica batteries in the M9 because the ones who came with the camera *2 hand, didn’t work well and the camera froze sometimes. I don’t know if because the not original battery o the SD card used in other camera before.
Question: I you have both cameras, and you want (need) to sell one of both, which one would you sell, which one would you keep? I really am struggling... M8 is fine , but it has a crop sensor. I take mostly landscape photographs and like wide angle pictures. With the crop sensor you always lose part of the wide angle effect. M9 is fine too, full frame. But with my voigtländer wide angles, a purple fringing shows up in the edges. And... the sensor is slightly corroded. I like photographing with open aperture and the corrosion only shows up at f5.6 and higher, so that's not my biggest problem. Who can help me out?
Hi, after years with both cameras, if I have to choose, I prefer the M8. The sensor is very special, the colours, the B&W, the way it handles, like a old film camera… M9 is the same, but a little bit less in every aspect. The problem is that m8 is older, and nobody asures you that something may happens. M9 is old too, but a bit more modern. If you find a m8 in good conditions and razonable price, go for it. And if what you find a good m9 with sensor replaced and good price, is a great option too. They are sisters, almost twins. But the m8 is the most special of the two. I bought one when prices where low, nobody wanted this crop sensor old first digital leica m, but now is different, it seams everybody likes it ;~)
@@myleicam8546 Hi, thanks for your quick response! I think you are right; I think I should stick with the M8 and sell the M9. My M8 is older but has much less actuations than my M9 (9400 vs 30.000). And my M9 has an original corroded sensor. Although it will be a sad moment to let it go, but then I will like the M8 even more. I like your videos. Have a nice day!
Nice video. I generally preferred the pictures taken with the m8. I was surprised that the pictures taken with the m9 did not look sharper despite that it has almost double the resolution (18 vs 10 mega pixels).
Hi stevem544, the M8 pictures sometimes look sharper than M9´s because it have less build-in sensor filter. And this 10 megapixels are more than enough. Almost impossible to find any difference with the 18 from the M9. Only zooming a lot, but who wonts that? I I never felt any lack of resolution.
Francisco Malanho, thanks for the comment. Not exactly, because is very personal choice. I just say an M8 in good conditions is all I need, and the same with the M9. The M8 is more special, this is for sure, but M9 is newer, full frame.. I don’t know! ;-)
In your test the M8 is the clear winner, but I know the M9 has some of the best color of any digital Leica. It seems like the M9 photos are all underexposed. I don't if that the differnce maker or perhaps the leica vs voitlander lens.
Sameer Shah thanks. I agree, m9 seems underexpose, we use same shutter speed, and in others the m8 is overexpose. Usually i choose the speed depending the camera i was using and my sister just copy mine. Also lenses ate very different, and probably for colors a Summicron 50 and Elmarit 28
Yes: the Voigtlander Norton 35mm Is not a Leica, but is similar to the old Summilux 35. Tridimensional images, character, light weight, excellent build quality and inexpensive. Is my only 35mm.
I'll definitely sell m8 if get myself m9, that's why I'm not buying m9 😉. Squeezed no more than 1% of what this camera is capable of yet. And it was my first 🔴 camera and will always be.
@@Zetaphotography I don't know why this happened. Is very strange. I shoot DNG+ B&W jpeg, but when I shoot only DNG, the files are there. Maybe someone who read your comment can help you.
