This is a recording of the Australian launch of the Q2 Monochrom and features an interview with highly regarded street photographer Knox Bertie.
(Please excuse some video lag issues in the recording - there were some broadcasting bandwidth issues during the event)

I think a Monochrom CL is a superb idea. A mono sensor would really have an advantage over a colour one shooting in B&W in the smaller format. I'd be in there without hesitation.

I bought the original Q in the QM form. I didn't think the Q2 was worth doing since I wanted an interchangeable lens camera. So now I own the SL2. I saw the M monochrome and Q2 monochrome models and loved the concept of monochrome only.. Now if there were an SL2 monochrome model using the Q2 monochrome sensor I would be delighted to buy one. I have all the lenses I need mostly f/1.4 so I could use the camera in all lighting situations. It seems to me the next move for Leica to introduce monochrome in the SL2

Seriously brilliant vid! Great job to Leica Camera Australia and fascinating listening to Knox Bertie and viewing his images! My wife and I are about to grab 2 x Q2M and are just waiting for the Reporter version to come out. We’ve been shooting with the original Q (we each have one) since 2015 and they are just phenomenal cameras.

Q2M works great with flash. had it out just yesterday in the streets with a small flashq off camera flash. Expose for the background and just bring a bit light on your subject. Works really great

My heart says tri-x 400. These Leica monochromes are the coolest digital cameras, but I’m never going to enjoy them more than my good old M6 with Tri-x (or double-X).

Why David? It is true that fuji offers good products (X100V for example), but this object has an absolutely fantastic design quality with results, at incredible high iso and it is FF. Sure the price is exaggerated, but it's a Leica and that's their policy. A chance greeting from Italy and sorry for my English

When you shoot regular Q2 in monochrome mode, is it sharper than when shot in color mode?

No, same sharpness. You need a dedicated B+W camera to get that extra crispness. That said, the Q2 is amazingly sharp anyway.

Wonderful photos. He used a red filter often which I like but I’m confused why Leica isn’t offering an official one for the Q2 Monochrom?

I honestly don't know why there is no Red filter in the range - POL, ND16, Orange, Yellow and Green as far as I know. I will ask and find out.

The distance scale is not accurate... It's very frustrating for zone focusing.

The scale is accurate but hard to read and interpret. But more importantly, the DoF scales are the same as from film days - like on M lenses. With such a high res sensor you have less DoF and thus the scales appear inaccurate. Rule of thumb - use the f5.6 scale or similar but set f16. That will give you roughly the expected DoF.

Thanks for the video! Regarding the crop/zoom feature of the Q2M - if you are cropped into say 50mm, does the camera then only "look" within that crop area for focusing and metering etc or is it still using the full frame? It just appears to me that this would be one "advantage" to this mode (e.g. to focus on a region of faces within a larger crowd, or to exclude the sun from both the captured frame and also its impact on the metering). I've watched a few reviews but have not heard any mention of his this works. Thanks

Hi Neil The crop applies to the jpeg only, but not the DNG. You will see the cropped DNG images when you first open the image in Lightroom but you can 'cancel' the crop. However, I am not sure if the cropped area becomes the new metered area. I shall find out... but I suspect not. You could always use spot metering or small field.

@@NeilSlater you can use spot metering but other mode will take into account the whole frame regardless of the crop mode as well my advise is to stop down if you plan to crop just to utilize the lens fully f4-5.6 where this lens shines 1.7 is incredible as well don’t get my wrong regardless the iso capabilities of this camera is mind boggling same like M10M . 99% of the time iso is on auto for me, exposure compensation all day long with Zoom button customized to AE lock and happy shooting 🙌👍

i have this camera and i'd like to see more than a street photography perspective. can this be used in the studio, can this be used in a professional setting and compete with a sony or a canon or nikon . i didn't buy this camera to be limited to just the streets

The Q2 can be used for anything. Its fixed 28mm lens means it might not be suited to some photography genres (wildlife for example) but that's no different to any other camera with a 28mm lens. See my video about using the Q here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DSOpX5kvd1w.html

Does the Q2 M have a Burst Mode or is 120 secs the max?

'Burst mode' is fast shooting ie 20fps - do you mean a B (Bulb) setting? If so, then 60 secs is the longest it will do according to the published tech specs. However, it seems it will do 120 seconds as well - at least that option was available when I used it.

Leica Australia - I have purchased Q2M recently and there is a problem with hot pixels at ISO 800 (sometimes even 400) and higher. From what I gathered online this is a common problem apparently with this camera. I saw somebody post that there is going to be a firmware addressing it (pixel remapping) - can you confirm that info about upcoming firmware?

I have no experience of this problem myself, and have no information to share about forthcoming firmware updates, if any. Sorry. I suggest you contact your dealer if you have issues with the camera. As a temporary fix, may I suggest looking at Capture One Pro 21? It has a dedicated hot pixel removal tool which works very well.

@@LeicaCameraAustralia that is how I am dealing with the issue right now :) at the dealer they want to ship camera for a replacement but I saw multiple stories of people doing that and then having an exact same problem with the replacement. I guess I will keep holding my fingers crossed for the firmware update because I absolutely love the camera and it would be a shame if Leica doesn't address this problem

With respect to Leica, I really think Knox could take a great photo with any camera. He just has a good eye, which at the end of the day is what separates a great pic from an ordinary one. The camera itself will never create a great image.

@@LeicaCameraAustralia It certainly helps a bit but we've all bought into the manufacturer's hype, rather than trying to improve ourselves. The truth of the matter is, like in any discipline, there are very very few people with the talent and skill to create stunning images and no amount of tech will change that. We all want to be seen as 'great' and 'masters' and see tech as the route, when in fact we are the only real route. And mostly you've either got it or you haven't. Also, we've all bought into the mantra that anybody can be anything they want as long as they want it enough. But that mantra is fake news. It's mainly raw talent bolstered with hard work, dedication and experience.
