Own Q3, M11, M11 and M11M and I have to say that my cameras perform good. I probably had the freezing issue with all of them combined 4 times. Remove and replace battery and it goes back to normal. How ever I wouldn’t get a Q3 as getting the best compact camera out there. I think an A7C R would give you much more versatility and cost you a fraction of the Q3 even when you need to buy lenses for it. The M11 system has been my main system now after years of owning various Sony bodies
I have a Q since 2016 and now I am contemplating between this camera and a Fuji GRX 50s ii with 45mm F/2.8 lens. I am very undecided. If there is anything that holds me back and go for the Leica is the 'tricks' that Leica does. For instance with the battery. At least with the Q you could by a Panasonic battery which was as good as the Leica battery. Its not about the money, its about the principle.
Favourite quote from video “For €6000 you take what you get”. This is my first time watching your channel. Very impressed with your observations and humour.
Oh hey Benj, the combination of M11 & Q3 would be the perfect Leica combo for you as a 28mm & 50mm shooter. I'm curious about your M11 video and whether you'll get a lemon like that or if your M11 works perfectly.
Having shot a Q2 for two years as ‘my camera’ alongside my Sonys which only get used for work, I fell in love with it. I sold the Q2, and got an X100vi, as I’d loved the previous version, the V. A day in, I knew I’d made a massive mistake, and although I tried to like it, I sold it and got the Q3, and I’ve never been happier with a camera. If I didn’t have weddings, I’d sell the lot and just have the Q3. You mention GFX, I’ve had one- and nothing, nothing compares to the Q3. Flip screen is great, EVF is brilliant,it’s just , for me- perfect.
I can totally understand that you didn't like the X100VI since it is very different from the Q. The Q is superior in every way. I shot my very first wedding mostly with the Q3. :D It was a lot of fun, but you really do need a good side camera.
Great well balanced review. Covered all the positives and negatives I’ve experienced over the last 5/6 months. Would love a bit more control on the jpeg settings,WB shift or even being able to create my own “Leica looks” to upload.
Appreciate that! Yes, it would have been great to have a bit of access to the JPG tonemapping. I find it really unfortunate not to have access to the white balance either. Even Sony has already integrated that. Presumably, Leica simply doesn't want anyone to tamper with their colors and tonemapping.
Great video - I’m really happy with my Sony A7CR which has a variant of the same 60MP sensor, interchangeable lenses, and rock solid (if uninspiring) software. You’ve fixed my GAS and FOMO. 🎉
Leica didn’t have much to change with the Q3 since the Q2 was already so good. However, I agree that the tilting screen is a great addition, especially for taller people like you, so you don’t have to shoot blindly from the hip. :D
Is there really no way to turn off the touchscreen at all? As a member of the big nose club, I always end up triggering touchscreens like that- starting from the Olympus EM5 days. Not a big deal if you can turn it off in a setting but not being able to sounds like a nightmare!
Tested the Q3 in store yesterday with 2.0.1 firmware. It's still slow to turn on/off. On takes 3 seconds, off around 7 seconds. Wifi app connection requires tapping 2-3 times before it connects without an error. Delete button from the menu didn't work (only touchscreen delete worked). There are quite a lot of problems for such an expensive camera. Strangely, both Q1 and Q2 both turn on/off within a 1-1.5 seconds.
Yeah, the Q3 is really not the fastest camera to power on and off. Strangely, for me, turning it off sometimes took more than 10 seconds. I think it somehow gets stuck on the SD card. Unfortunately, you can't test it since the camera doesn't have integrated storage. Anyway, Leica still has many errors to fix before all the kinks are ironed out.
Thanks! I was thinking of getting the Sony A7CR with the 35mm GM for street. But in Germany that combo is about the same as the Q3. The feel of the camera would be much better with the Q3. Otherwise I shoot Nikon (Z8). I think I'll get the Q3 (unless the SL3 turns out to be very, very compact, but then I need an extra 2k for a cheap Summicron)
The SL 3 is going to be a literal brick. The SL2 was the heaviest camera I've ever held. In comparison, you hardly notice the Q3 on a strap. The A7CR and Q3 are already very different. I would only recommend the Sony if you need a system camera; otherwise, the Q3 is much better, especially because of the lens.
Its the IBIS that rattles and is completely normal. It's not just a 28mm.. crop mode gives 35 and 50mm which are both capable of printing huge. The 90mm is a bit too much of a leap but for smaller prints up to A4 its still good enough.
The rattle comes from the OIS. I know it’s normal, but it doesn’t feel very high quality, even though it’s unavoidable. I think an IBIS would be better, but it wouldn’t fit in the Q.
Please avoid M11 based bodies and Q3 at all costs, i had 5 different bodies these last 2 years (3 m11, m11m, Q3 and recently m11p for 2weeks) ALL were plagged with freezes, crashes and slow downs (Q3 was the worst), i'll use my M lens collection with SL2-S until maybe a stable M12 is out
And I thought I had the worst luck since everyone else seems to have no problems... however, it looks like you're the biggest unlucky person. The way Leica is currently building their cameras, I think the M12 will be even more terrible than better.
My M back luck started with m8 broke sensor in 2009 , then in 2015 M9-p corrosion, 2018 M-a scratching film I have tons on picture I should start a praising blog someday 😂 best wishes for 2024🎉
I have not yet had a problem with my M11 (or my Q2 Monochrom, which I had for 2 years). The Leica store I purchased it from keeps track of this sort of thing and reportedly has had essentially no complaints (and everyone there of course uses lots of Leica kit).
Yep, my Old X-H1 has sometimes frozen autofocus point, what's quickly solved with off-on leaver. However, my 5DmkIV sometimes freezes so hard I need to remove the battery and wait for cca. 10 seconds for the camera to be reset completely...
Oh, okay, I think the issue with the Fuji is a regular bug. The Canon situation seems a bit odd to me and could possibly be attributed to aging, perhaps? I believe every camera manufacturer has to deal with getting all the bugs under control... and then there's Leica. lol
Nope, my 5DmkIV does that from the wery begininng. To be fair that's a rare occasion, say every 4 to 5 months, but still, very irritating if it happens in the middle of a payed shoot...
I have a A sony a7rv for pro photo work with a ton of lenses. I pick up my leica everyday. There is something so easy about taking a great image with it
FYI, for anyone confused also about the 60hz vs 120hz of the EVF, this is something you will likely only notice when panning the camera around, then you should see the difference. Statically you will not see a difference.
You're right that one perceives the difference more in motion. However, I don't notice the difference not only in the Q3 but in any display, be it a camera, tablet, or smartphone. I'm probably just too old. lol.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Hehe... maybe it's just not a great 120hz EVF or something... I have a fairly strong background in pc gaming. I have 144hz and 165hz monitors and I have 60hz photography monitor. For me the difference is night and day (with these fast paced games). Even when I move my mouse cursor from my 165hz screen to the 60hz one you can see the cursor drag and jitter (vs super smooth on the fast hz displays).. But... if I leave the mouse cursor alone on either display you can't tell which monitor has the faster refresh rate. The hz thing is PURELY about motion and nothing else, no motion in the EVF or screen, no perceivable difference.
Seems to me like the Leica is an overpriced and quite limiting inferior camera if you know your way around more sophisticated camera bodies. While everyone loves the "looks" it just does not justify the Rolex pricing. Thanks for the honest review.
I was willing to pay the overpriced price if I had received a perfect camera for it. Even if it hadn't experienced freezes, there were software errors in the camera that should never happen in this price range. Well, I'll invest my money elsewhere then.
I have several Leicas including the Q3, M11 and SL3. None have ever given me a minute's trouble. As far as price goes, they are expensive. But when you compare an M11 or SL3 to a Nikon Z8 or similar, the price is not that dramatically different. But the reasons I will pay a premium for Leica are quality of the glass and build quality. I would match my SL3 with 35mm APO Summicron SL against any camera/lens combo of the full frame variant for IQ - which ultimately is what it's all about. The ONLY camera that have seen images from that surpasses that combo is the Hasselblad X2D and it is indeed incredible (and also very expensive).
I have the Q3 had the Q2 I love my Q3 you have to know what you are buying before buying. There are so many opinions and you know what opinions are like clean version everyone has one 🤓
Haha, yes. If you ask 10 people, you’ll probably get 10 different opinions about the Q3. The Q3 is a very specialized tool that’s definitely not meant for everyone. :D
Great camera for traveling and more. Only downside is, changing focus point using the evf. I mis a joystick. D-pad sucks to change focus point. As you mentioned. Great video and i agree with your conclusion.
Nice honest video thanks … though to be honest, I’m not too sure why I’m watching as it’s too late for me, I took the plunge and so far absolutely love it. Incidentally my batteries match the body? Finally, if I’ve learnt one thing so far on my Leica/Fuji/GR journey … you will definitely always find someone who has had an awful experience … I suppose that is why ‘art’ is arguably so reflective of life itself!
Of course, there are people like me who just happen to receive a faulty camera and others who have absolutely no problems. That's just how it is. But it seems to me that other manufacturers manage to handle it while Leica doesn't even know where the problem is coming from (which was confirmed to me by Wetzlar over the phone). Unfortunately, even at such high prices, I have to be picky. I just want to clarify for the people who are nitpicky like me. :D
I saw on Samuel Streetlife that the lens, in its uncorrected state, seems to be more like 26mm. In corrected JPGs, it should actually be around 28mm. In the side-by-side tests, at least, I had exactly the same field of view as the Nokton, so I would say it's pretty accurate at 35mm.
Thank you very much. I always use Aperture Priority. Minimum shutter speed outside is 1/500, minimum aperture is 5.6. AF-S without Eye AF. With Sony, it's basically the same, but I use AF-C with box tracking or eye tracking.
What is the maker of your peak design strap. Looks interesting. I have a q3 and love it. Gave up on Sony, which i enjoyed, for a lighter more nimble camera that does everything g except telephoto shots.
So I only use original Peak Design products. My go-to is the regular black PD leash and I also have the PD cuff. I only had the anchors taped with leather so they wouldn't scratch my M11. :D
My wish would be to get a Sl3. Something tells me the sensor tech and the lens mount/lenses are the biggest cost. Now all leica m11, q and sl are using the same sensor the plsying field is open.
Theoretically, the SL3 is even more versatile to use since you can also use regular M lenses there in addition to the L lenses. But it's good that you now have the choice and the sensor no longer limits which camera you buy.
Weather sealing is already provided with the batteries, but what's more important for the manufacturers is that they can sell these batteries for double or triple the price of comparable ones.
I don't think it's that simple either. The main reason people buy an M11 is, I think, the rangefinder and the associated limitations. Both feel very different.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel Completely agree - as a Pro for 35years I used the tools that did the job - love em or hate and I had feet in both camps I never quite understood the Leica M until I got one -I hated it, but understood its not what a camera can do it's how it makes you feel - I felt like a photographer using this rather than just being one!!!
Amazing cameras but sold my Q after developing a hatred for the button to release the manual focus. There's no need for that process. Every lens out there does not need this to toggle from auto to manual focus.
I think it has something to do with the fact that the Q doesn't just have focus by wire like every other lens where you simply flip the switch, but it has a real physical focus system. I think Leica tried it during the design process, but this variant was certainly the best. However, I can understand well if one doesn't like it. It's a bit fiddly.
Bin nicht sicher, wenn dass in Wirklichkeit ist, oder ein Traum.. boah. Was hast du geraucht? Ich will es auch. 😂 gut gemacht Bruder. Ich liebe was du machst 👏🏽 Schlaf gut ne? 😅
Nice honest review of leica Q3. And do you still have the leica m11 despite of your bad experience from it? Or it is rent? And how's it going the leica m11? After the 2.0.1 firmware update?
Thank you, no, I returned my M11 in September. Just read the changelog for version 2.0. Good new features, especially the ability to finally deactivate the touchscreen. Maybe that version would have helped, but I rather doubt it. 🤷♂️
I don't think I have a dedicated chapter on autofocus. Definitely much better than the X100VI that I bought recently. Unfortunately, Fujis' autofocus has gotten worse due to the firmware updates, and the lens is also way too slow. I never used the Q2 for long, but since the Q3 uses phase detection, I think it's much better now.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel is there a way you could compare more in dept or in your experience wich autofocus is better, i just got the fuji x100vi but i want the q3 and im not sure if get it, quite expensive and also have the q2 what im trying to sell, but i want the q3, the AF is decisive for me, thanks
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel the Leica Forum is a forum founded by members of Leica .... they do not want to talk about failures ... they call it " Leicabashing" and kick you off the forum :)
I have a dedicated section in the video called 'Leica Looks,' where I have compared the new Leica looks side by side. Otherwise, all the images in the video use my own preset that I created for the M11 and Q3.
The only thing that Joe Biden could possibly be fit for and I hesitate when I say this, is that maybe in a small New England town where there is a little old movie theater on Main Street, I could see Joe Biden in a maroon velvet suit standing at the front entrance ripping movie tickets in half. On a slow Wednesday evening maybe Joe Biden could sell popcorn and when the movie is over I could see him cleaning up inside the theater with a broom and a dustpan. That’s about as much responsibility that I would feel comfortable giving him.
Pretty sure the Kodak DC40 connected via old RS232 serial, not usb. I'm not sure what the actual first camera to sync via usb was (I'm excluding the logitech webcams), but possibly the Kodak DC240i which did feature usb syncing and came out around the time of the iMac...
Thank you for the information. I really spent an hour trying to find an answer to that, but it's proving more difficult than I thought. The first "camera" with USB was a Logitech webcam, but I don't think that counts. If even three LLMs with internet access don't know, then apparently it's not really written anywhere on the internet. Maybe somewhere in a secret forum.
I am familiar with the Sigma Fp, and since it doesn't have a mechanical shutter, it is absolutely unsuitable as a camera due to the rolling shutter. But its a decent video camera.
He said at 5.41 in his video shooting his test chart. "capturing a simply unbeliveable amount of detail" I would say that since it comes from him, the objective is somehow quite good. 😅
Electronically speaking, the M11 was the most immature and unstable camera I've ever held in my hands. Bugs and freezes non-stop. So yeah, the title is justified, at least in this case.
That could be true. The Zf has indeed received Nikon's latest autofocus algorithms. I think, however, that the Q3 performs similarly to the Lumix S5II, and it is almost on par with the Sony Alpha 7IV. The Zf is a camera that I would also like to test sometime.
@@TheBigNegative-PhotoChannel sadly both have a long history but I don’t know why they can’t catch up with canon or even sony it became famous with their good products from 2019 where many companies lost a lot because of covid-19, I mean okay Hasselblad cameras are medium format and everything with it is harder than normal but come on Leica your cameras are full frame like the others.
