This is the twelfth of 12 tracks on the Leicester Oral History Trail. Using voices from the collections of the East Midlands Oral History Archive (EMOHA), the trail takes you from Leicester's Town Hall Square, through the Market, past the Clock Tower, round the back of Highcross, and back to the Clock Tower along Silver Street. The trail can also be downloaded from the Empedia website, which has a free iPhone app, at empedia.info/maps/29 and the EMOHA website (where there is a printable map of the trail) at www.le.ac.uk/emoha/community/a...

Wow. Just found this by accident. Loads of memories of the groups that played there. Worked there as a DJ in the early to mid sixties.

loved the Il Rondo, I went regularly from 19 60 to late 64, saw the Stones, Johnny Kid and the Pirates, Brian Poole and the Tremeloes, Brook Brothers, Long john Baldry, Freddie and the Dreamers, Freddie Starr, who came and shook everyone's hand in the queue waiting to go in, he said 'my name is Freddie Starr, remember my name because one day I'll be famous' ........ of course the first band I remember down there, and I only recently learned their name, was Tony Bart and the ReVels who were the first live band to play there on a Sunday night !!!!!!! When Tony left the band they became the Farinas, and later became Family!

How many times did Howlin' Wolf play the Rondo? When I saw him play there, it wasn't the Black Cat Blues Band that accompanied him, it was Steamhammer.

The Churchill was where you went to buy certain supplies (strangely from short haired guys in suits) before proceeding to the Rondo:)
