Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes performs Frédéric Chopin's Ballade in G Minor, Op. 23, No.1. Recorded for his album "Chopin Ballades & Nocturnes".
► Get the full album here: LeifOveAndsnes.lnk.to/ChopinAY
"The first ballade is one of his most famous pieces, you can go to any music conservatory or university around the world, and you hear all these students practicing it. It has a sort of attraction to all pianists and it is understandable. It is just a perfect piano piece. It’s just a line, unison line, going up, both hands playing the same thing, not really a melody, nothing and little by little you get to some chords and suddenly a door opens and you have this unbelievably beautiful melody and it’s really memorable." - Leif Ove Andsnes

Good God, that's the best interpretation I've ever heard, as if everyone else was making it way too complicated and grossly over-exaggerate the rubato till there is no metric left, when this ballad is just a simple pastoral at heart. The dynamics are perfect played in relaxed manner.

What do you guys thing about this interpretacion? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kXRSqMyD1lM.html Baremboim interpretation is my favorite, the part of 3:20 in andsnes interpretation I think is a little bit to fast, instead, Baremboim, in my opinion play this part and in general the piece better. (But of course Andsnes interpretation still great) But what do you thing about Barenboim interpretation?

Haven't you heard Arthur Rubinstein? This pianist is playing all the notes, but there is no heart, no voice...no phrasing, singing from your soul. It's like he's playing a Czerny etude. NO PASSION. JUST NOTES UP AND DOWN. The music is the language of the soul and heart and one has forgotten it. So sad that the audience can not identify it anymore.

This is because like all extraordinary musicians, he respects Chopin's music and style and when you add his own incredible musical talent which is always subtle, you get this so deeply emotional result (we're far from the marshmallow syrup we hear from some other current pianists...). He's my favorite pianist with Menahem Pressler, Van Cliburn, Horowitz and Krystian Zimerman...

I began formal lessons at age about 6 and learned until I was about 20. Then began lessons again when I was about 24 and went on with lessons for many years. I played in an international piano competition in Paris in 1971 but did not progress beyond the first round. Most trained pianists play tis and none of us ever get the magic he gets in even one phrase . I notice how he changes fingers on the same key and in moving and in bringinging hand forward . So many things I never figured out or heard my teacher say and his pedaling so musical and the textures and imagery he can bring up . So much magic and imagination - it s more than fingers and he doesn't believe in the crazy 19th century rubatos that pianists consider bad taste and yet he still gets so much into the music . It takes so much to make music . I found this music in high school 40 years ago and still every time I think or play its passages there aarea thousand decisions to make and I'll never be able to even copy the sounds (the music) he gets here .
