LEIXEN VV 898E - HIGH POWER 25 WATT -- NEW VERSION TEST

A shack / mobile field test of the new updated Leixen VV898E radio, not be confused with its lower power sibling the VV898 without the E, I put it throught the power meter and listen and compare to it on the SDR.
This radio can be had for about £55 if you shop around, be careful to ensure that get the 25W version and not the 10W version of the radio, although the 10W version of the radio is cheaper.

Decided to buy that radio and it arrived today, so I thought that could be good to give some comments about it here, since this seems to be most informative video on RU-vid atm. So pros:- Cheap- Has a good audio for price- Programming via Leixens own software works good- Light weight Cons:- Chirp doesn't really work with the radio It has a dual memory bank so A and B have different memory channels. ,I used this By putting 2m Repeaters on A and 70cm Repeaters on B. Also you can multitask memory channels and VFO at the sametime so that is helpful.73's OF1EXC

Just got one( 898) Also have gotten a J pole. Plan to put mine on a clip board and shuttle it from home to auto. as I see fit. The J pole will serve my 898, and a 40 year old hy-gain ® 6 channel crystal unit. Back up. I enjoy every scrap of info I can get. Tks de kv4li.

Paul, great to see an update from you. Always enjoy your videos and wish mine had the same amount of quality and depth. I guess I'm too lazy. Very nice little radio indeed, solid and well made. nice and lightweight for portable use, would go well in a backpack. Also nice to see a chinese radio that does what it says on the tin from a power point of view too! Love your portable radio case too. Impressive signal report too for a tiny rig especially compared to the Yaesu. I've shared the video and linked to your channel on my blog too. 73

Thanks mate, crikey your videos are amazing, my missus laughs when she sees me watching videos of radio masts! ha ha I love them too your not on your own, always been fascinated with radio. Yes this radio really does put out what it says, glad you enjoyed the video, I also tweeted your drone video, I think its amazing it really ticks all the boxes for me that one.

Haha yeah I love radio towers. There something about a mast sat on a lonely hill just transmitting all sorts out. Sad I know lol. Going to do another series in the winter. There's loads more closer to home. Glad you enjoyed my vid and cheers for the tweet! Shame you're not local! We could get some other crazy projects going to beat the drone one. Me and my mate are currently thinking of a sequel to beat it. Baofeng DM-5R review coming very soon.

The thing I don't like about the VV-898S is that the screen does a wierd "wink out" when navagating where as the regular 10 watt VV-898 does not. For example if you are in VFO and it displays 146.520, and you try to type in 147.570, as you are typing 147.570, it will wink back to displaying 146.520

Thanks for the review of the later higher power model. Not bad with the heigher power, as I had the original lower power model a few years ago. Does it get hot after a while running high power? I notice the portable now out for a couple of years, hys tc-g25w model in a case with a battery, utilizes the same transceiver as you tested, with a case, rechargeable battery, charger and an antenna so239 connector with a dual band antenna. One review from 2 years a

Really nice test. I own one by myself. The microphone is really bad. I replaced it by a used Kenwood KMC-30. And the receiver is really bad too. But it is a cheap radio and ok for repeater qsos. 73s Stephan, DF6PA

Continued, was satisfied with the portable transceiver, while the current review by Ham Radio Crash Course, on RU-vid, says due to problems to pass on the portable radio transceiver kit.

Nice one! I would be interested to see you review the Leixen Note 25, which purports to be the most powerful handheld in the World, at 25w! Some have had 40w from it. Definitely not one to use close to your face. I use a speaker-mic.

Hi Paul - good informative video without all the usual c**p seen on the Tube! Another Ham friend and I were looking for just this information (power output). Regarding the Yaesu 8900, are you aware the “int” feature is selected on your readout? “int” is for the Yaesu WIRES system and chops off the first 3 to 4 seconds of any transmissions made. That’s why your callsign is not heard by your SDR - just a single tone at the start of your transmission. Just press the left VOL knob to disable. It’s an easily-occurring operating “fault”, as the left VOL knob can be easily knocked.

Thanks for the video. Cheap radio, but I'm on the look out for a bigger radio, now that I passed my ham license exam. But still a interesting littel radio. One question regarding the mag mount. Do you keep it on the roof while driving? In case you do, do you have any additional security mounting in place? I didn't see any but maybe I oversaw them.
@knoxieman
@knoxieman 8 лет назад
Hi there Thanks for the comments, the radio is a great starter radio if you are just starting out, there are other radios but you wont get much better for the money, the other option is a second hand radio if you want a radio that is bigger with more features for the same money. The mag mount it amazing it doesnt move, ive done past the speed limit with it and it doesnt move the magnet is very strong, one thing to watch dont let someone else take it off, my missus tried to take it off and slid it across the roof instead of picking it up, it scratched the hell out of the roof on my old car. Enjoy the hobby, I passed my exams in 1990 and still love the hobby as much all these years later.

Knoxieman, just an observation... You key the mic and start talking too soon.. That can be seen at 11.14 into the video,

Hi there - I have bought a Leixen VV-898S 25W Transceiver on line from ebay. I am in Australia. The radio has been good till recently when it has locked up in 001 saved memory and nothing seems to work to get it out of this mode. I have tried to do a factory reset but it stays in saved memory channel 001. My son also bought another of these and he was using the programming cable and it become red hot when being used. Have you any comments or solutions to my first and second issues described here ? Have tried the reset operation several times with no luck at all - radio remains locked. Cheerz Stuart from Melbourne Australia

I don't own this set but I don't remember it being poor, the person who owns it uses it a lot and he has lots of radios to choose from so it can't be that bad.
