"If you are a new ham you can learn all this stuff, it is not all that complicated." So says you, I find all of it pretty complicated and confusing. LOL I appreciate all the help with mine. I will be calling again soon for more help. :)
This radio is FCC part 90 approved for commercial use. You can disable FPP (front panel programming). Miklor's site has a link to the legal data. You can certainly run ham, but you are right that they are not part 95(?) legal for FRS, GMRS, etc. Thanks for the video!
@@Iridium242 via mic is possible as it has the A/B button, but the main unit does not. I would plan to use the radio as RX, so with detached mic. Then would need to change the band from A to B and back only using the unit's buttons.
That radio may not be type excepted for FRS, but GMRS could be used for GMRS repeaters. Everyone forgets, GMRS has repeaters that allow users to extend coverage like Amateur Radio. You right FRS wouldn't be wise to program in, but GMRS channels shouldn't really matter as long as you're license for GMRS.
We found out because we used to go to a ham fest in California (Sort of like a gun show but for ham radio stuff instead of guns lol) and the VFW had a table set up where they sold these antennas that they make. This radio has 10 watts but you can use up to 1500 on ham radio, my mobiles have 50, some have 100 and my base radios have something similar, its a wide range but the standard seems to be about 50 watts on VHF UHF and 100 on HF (Shortwave) you can talk around the world on that most times.
No the rules for ham radio are different, You must perform an RF environmental evaluation if the peak-envelope-power input to the antenna exceeds certain limits on certain bands. You yourself would do the evaluation, and keep a record of it so you are not exposing people to overly high limits of RF. This site explains it the best. www.arrl.org/fcc-rf-exposure-regulations-the-station-evaluation
There is no such thing as type-acceptance for Part 97 (amateur radio) … but I understand from another web site that the radio was type accepted for Part 90 (GMRS) … But not sure of that … Nice review ...
Great video. I have a similar setup on my shack using a knife old .50cal ammo can worked up to a kenwood. Quick question does the "headphones " jack on the back double as an external speaker output?
+Jason Bates You know, I had this radio for about a month and did not know that, I had to look :) Yes it does have an external speaker jack, I plugged headphones in and it worked with them as well. The speaker is nice and clear and loud too. Kind of shocking for such a small speaker.
