"Eu velida nom dormia" (I, fair one, wasn‘t sleeping) is a cantiga de amigo (friend's song) composed by Pedro Anes Solaz, whose refrain "Lelia doura" has long been the subject of various interpretations as to its origin and meaning. The expression is probably an approximate transliteration of the Maghrebi Arabic 'lel yadūr' (that translates to as "the night goes round", i.e. it goes on and on), which would fit in quite well with the voice of the maiden who can't sleep. Recently, however, it has been interpreted in a different way, to "it's my turn", in which the words "lelia" and "doura" come from the Andalusian Arabic. Thus, "leila" comes from "liya", which means 'to me', while "doura" comes from "ddáwra", which means 'turn', so "liya ddáwra" would be "to me (belongs) the turn".
Still, the only thing that remains to be clarified is the word "edoy", whose possible interpretation comes not from the Arabic, but as an expression in the old Iberian Romance language, that derives from the Latin "et hodie", meaning "and today". Therefore, the verse "edoy lelia doura" can be read as "ed oi liya ddáwra". Also left to be explained is this use of the Arabic language in the refrain, a unique case in all Galician-Portuguese poetry. In fact, the changes that seem to introduce unexpected deviations of the maiden's vocal sense continue to make it difficult to fully interpret the song. Due to the rhythm and refrain, it seems to be a song made for dancing, and was probably sung by a 'soldadeira' to a Moorish lord, or an Arab musician, who could have been in the service of the peninsular sovereigns. In the latter interpretation, the troubadour might have been alluding to a possible forbidden love between the maiden and the Muslim.
As for the poet, Pedro Anes Solaz was a troubadour active in the mid-13th century, most likely from the region of Pontevedra in Galicia. In fact, his surname comes from a toponym recognised in Galicia, indicating that he may have belonged to a family from the region's small nobility, a social status perhaps more in line with the placement of his compositions in the songbooks. Nevertheless, there's no other information that could enable a minimal biography of the troubadour to be drawn up.

Ainda assim, a única coisa que falta esclarecer é o vocábulo "edoy", cuja interpretação não vem do árabe, mas duma expressão na antiga língua românica ibérica, que deriva do latim "et hodie", e que significa "e hoje". Assim, o verso "edoy lelia doura" pode ser lido como "ed oi liya ddáwra". Também fica por explicar este uso da língua árabe no refrão, caso único em toda a poesia galego-portuguesa. De facto, as alterações que parecem introduzir inesperados desvios de sentido na voz da donzela, continuam a dificultar a interpretação plena da canção. Pelo ritmo e refrão, parece ser uma cantiga feita para bailar, provavelmente cantada por uma soldadeira a um senhor mouro, ou a um músico árabe, que poderia estar ao serviço dos soberanos peninsulares. Nesta última interpretação, o trovador poderia estar a aludir a um possível amor proibido entre a donzela e o muçulmano.
Quanto ao autor da cantiga, Pedro Anes Solaz foi um trovador ativo em meados do século XIII, muito provavelmente natural da região de Pontevedra, na Galiza. Na verdade, o seu apelido, deverá ter origem num topónimo atestado na Galiza, indicando a sua eventual pertença a uma família da pequena nobreza da região, estatuto social talvez mais conforme com a colocação das suas composições nos cancioneiros. Não existe, no entanto, qualquer outro dado que permita traçar uma biografia mínima do trovador.
