I think the Dorn is great in a ‘distraction Carnifex’ role. It’s big, it’s scary, and opponents will divert resources to deal with it. Meanwhile, a spearhead of other armour can threaten the other side of the table. Special mention to having an Enginseer with the Dorn to give it insane durability which will pull more activations than the opponent realises to deal with it.
I'm debating taking an Engineseer to the RT I have next weekend or regimental attaches for deepstrike denial. Not sure if my Dorns need a 4++ given I will use then quite cagey. Will be the case that when I don't take the 4++ I will regret not having it!
@@GuardsmanHanan I think the Enginseer is always worth it if you’re taking a superheavy, but for a Dorn I’d only do it if list construction falls that way to make it affordable. I’m taking a lot of armour to a 5 round tournament next month in NZ so hopefully will get some good use out of my tank company.
I was watching one of Mordian Glory's streams recently and he had some success in a tournament using a couple of LR Vanquishers, which are widely accepted to be pretty terrible. However, because they're so cheap in comparison to the other variants, he treated them as kind of throwaway unit that he could push up aggresively to screen the rest of his armored company. Even if the main gun on the Vainquisher misses, you've still got a good amount of dakka from the extra weapons and a pretty durable T11/W13/2+ platform that often surprises opponents by requiring a lot more firepower to take down than they think. While my favorite tank is the Stormsword, because of potential terrain limitations I'm looking forward to trying out Leontus+Triple Vanquisher to see if it's viable.
MG is legendary. As you say whilst it's main weapon is very mediocre, 3 Leman Russ is still 3 Leman Russ with inherent toughness and lots of dakka. I reckon you could apply the same idea but with the Eradicator as its main weapon is better but will cost you 15 more points
@@GuardsmanHananThanks for the reply. It's funny that you mention the Eradicator because swapping those in were my first thought when he mentioned how he was using his Vanquishers on stream. If you run a pressure list with Catachan bricks and lots of Scout Sentinels I think Eradicators could be decent in that frontline role. The reliable number of shots on the main gun is solid and if you go MM/Las and give them Leontus/Sentinel/FoF/Exterminator support they could be pretty scary. For the Vanquishers I would prefer to take them in their more traditional role and hang back on a firing lane with Plasm/Las and see what pops its head out. With the same support above you're kind of getting to Fire Prism levels of reliability even though it's only one shot. BS3+/2+ (if stationary) with re-roll 1's and then 2's/3's to wound. Most vehicles are probably saving on a 6 and lighter vehicles probably don't get a save. 3 Vanquishers would probably do alright over the course of 5 turns but I'll let you know how my testing goes.
Real Insightful , trying to experiment/branch out of the 2 TC's w Demos , I've had that 1 game where both rolled a 1 on death. I think the BC russ w Creed & hellhound could be a cheap*ish way to maybe get that essential AP 2 w ignore cover into hidden troops in cover. Tried a game without either after Cov GT and the Rogals guns bounced off a little too much. Hellhound almost providing that area denial and still being as tough on the save throws helps aswell.
I've tried Hellhounds several times and ain't convinced. With the melta weapons they either wreck of do nothing! As u say BC russes could work with the AP support...
I’m a new guard player. I’ve got two Rogal Dorns from the battle force, and I love the way they look versus the older leman Russ. I had a leman Russ years ago but sold it. I wonder if there might be a refresh coming down the line someday.
The tank commander is best with the exterminator auto cannon. The autocannon has poor ap but if you back it up by another exterminator russ and fields of fire its barely worse than a demolisher and it works in melee. Idk if id run 3 of them, i prefer 1 TC with auto cannon and then 2 exterminators for redundancy, along side a dorn. Its been working ok.
In my local meta (no tournaments) my Rogal Dorn is underwhelming. I rarely get to take advantage of its long range oppressor cannon and the other guns are 18-24" which require it to get in close, so not much synergy there. Due to its durability stats people tend leave it alone and avoid it. I would much rather work the list to have another 2 russes (or 1 russ and other supporting units).
Your inclusion of the points per wound actually got me thinking. Using Hellhounds/Eradicators as frontline tanks could be pretty point efficient. With 11/12 PPW respectively even if one gets Lanced, it's not a crippling loss. And with removing cover and the Nova Cannons raw volume of fire (And minimum wounding on 5's) for the two options there's something Bonus points to neither being too concerned about being engaged
Sorry I missed this. Yeah Hellhounds/Eradicator is well cheap. I've tried the Hellhound but found it's weapons to be pretty mweh. Do u take the Inferno or melta cannon?
No worries boss. Currently the Hellhounds I've used have been inferno cannons to just cook light inf. For me, the real benefits of the HH are its removing cover, allowing things like arty to pound the target, and its cheap PPW. If it kills something, that's just a perk. All that being said, I've been trying to make inf guard work like a goober so take plenty of grains of salt lol
Nice one, good luck with finding the right list build. I'm still navigating a list that gives me consistent success. Don't think there is one formula for success with guard atm however I'm finding having loads of battleline is proving helpful
Currently I'm running with 4 Catachan and 4 Infantry Squad as a frontline, supported by a Ratlling Screen, HQ of Leontus, Creed, and a PCS with some infantry thrown in And then the two manticores and basilisk keeping Leontus nice and snug in a friendship park
I’ve been playing a team game and in my 1k list I take 1 rogal dorn, 1 tank commander and 1 exterminator among other things and it’s been working out great
Talking about S6 will wound the Dorn on 6+ is not the main thing. It is that Lascanons (S 12) is wounding on 4+ instead of 3+. And Lascanons are very prevailant and the main antitank in most armies. That makes a huge diffrent vs russes.
While this video is undoubtedly useful for people trying to maximize the cost efficiency of their competitive Guard lists, I’ve found these videos incredibly useful in maximizing a Tracked only list, which while probably incapable of winning games, has been an incredibly fun thought experiment, although as mentioned a few times, you really overpay for tank orders on Tank Commanders
The Dorn suffers from the Carnifex and Baneblade syndromes. It’s big, it’s expensive, and it *looks* scary. Indeed, it’s big, and expensive. But not scary. It’s a pushover. For just over the price of bringing one you can pack an extra 2 Russes depending on variant, which comes with utility. And importantly, the Leman Russ looks 10x better as a model befitting the setting - I mean won’t get shot because it’s not a bullet magnet like the Guard’s big tanks like the Baneblade, which can barely move on most tables.
The Dorn is great, very durable, a big distraction, lots of firepower and as a long range fire support unit it’s probably better than any of the Leman Russes that are meant for the same job. But some russes have a different function and therefore it’s not the right comparison. An Eradicator is a far better close range assault vehicle and the exterminator is the best force multiplier
Yeah agreed, Dorn is pure output vs the Russes which have more precise uses. Would be cool to try out a pure Russ list running all the variants to see how they all compare.
@@GuardsmanHanan absolutely. I’ve only had a few games and stuck with the el Classico or the exterminator in hybrid lists but I’m very tempted to try a few others. I think they could all be good in the right scenario
@@CMTechnica for an extra 100 points sure. But the baked in durability is another aspect to the brute force in what I meant. The dorn can be a little caviler with its positioning where Russ tanks can't
Haha nice, I've considered the malcador several times and still have a Defender to assemble. What's the thinking on the Malcador battle tank? It's 10pt less than the Dorn, has a better ability, but way less dakka
@@GuardsmanHanan I’ve used 2 in a few games and they’ve been fine, granted I’ve gone Triple Las cannon on them and the Battle cannon is mostly for anti-elite work.
i startet guard not long ago, and was close to order the battleforce.. but then again, i wantet the tanks but not all the inf :P i cant use all those cadians and HQs. :P dno if i would ever field 2x rogals
So the deal with not being able to shoot on desth in combat cause it falls back onto Big Guns Never Tire. You cant use Big Guns Never Tire out of your shooting phase because of the Out of Phase rules. Silly? Most definitely and it shluld be addressed. As it stands from what I've seen it being ruled on from TOs, you cant do it.
