I’m pushing on 2 years of using the primal zen, even got my self a second pair, Sunray suede. It’s been my dedicated work shoe, lifting, walking, can wear it all day and feel great. Surreal what a knockout product lens has put out and I found them completely by chance

I just got a pair of these and I LOVE THEM! They are more flexible then altra lone peaks. I think they let my feet move and flex but I feel comfy as hell. It’s the maximum amount of cushion that allows your feet to move and flex freely. I think it’s an invaluable tool for me transitioning to barefoot and getting the benefits enough to stick with it. Prios are awesome and comfy on your feet except after long periods I do feel pain in my tendons and my lower back.

I have used and abused this shoe for 1 year now. It holds up great! I wore thru all my soles on primal 2s....these are way way more solid. I even skated in them. I literally ruined a pair of primal 2s skating in one quick foot drag. I just wanted to add that in for anyone who really destroys their shoes. These are great shoes

I do lots of walking, no running. I bought my first pair of barefoot shoes a year ago, wore them for a week, and gave up because of the lack of comfort (feeling every tiny stone I stepped on). When I read the description of Lems' Primal Zen, the extra stack height looked promising, so I went ahead and ordered them. After a few months, I am happy with the fit and feel, having an acceptable amount of cushioning for me.

Great review! You have proven my thoughts on stack height. I have both Xero’s and Lems. I have used other zero drop shoes as well in the past when I started my running journey in, “Altra’s, Topo’s” I started having weird foot pain issues, so I went to the Xero’s and my foot problems went away, but I was hammering my feet a little hard and starting to have other issues. I have Lems for my daily work shoes, so I tried running in them and wow! My problems went away! I love running in my Xero Mesa Trails, but on concrete and other hard surfaces I can only do about 3-4 miles before I start having foot pain in the ball of my foot. So Lems for the win! I tried going back to my old Altra’s and Topo’s, but the foot pain started right up and I felt no control or balance wearing something with a big stack height. The Lems are just the right amount. One last thing to consider also is the Lems soles are actual rubber and not foam like a lot of others are, so I’m sure that helps too. My old Altra’s I would wear the soles off in very little time running on asphalt.

Hi, which model do you use for running on concrete? I own the Primal Zen and Primal Persuit, but I don't know which one would be good for a run. I was thinking about the primal 2.... I currently run in the Altra Escalante Racer, but Altra has gone is an awful direction with their new shoes.

Re: stack height, when your feet become developed enough to want more ground feel, you can go to using these without the inserts. That's what I did with my first 'barefoots', Altra Lone Peak. I got a few more months use without the inserts as my feet essentially outgrew them. Now I have Splay Explores for everyday and mild trail walking, and Vivobarefoot Forest ESC boots for rougher & wet/mud/snow-ready hiking & field/yard work. I was surprised when I first wore the Splays, even after all that time in the Altras even insert-less, at how much more 'honest' I needed to be with my walking form ;~) I really like them.

Been wearing the Xero Prio All Day SRs for a year now (my first pair of barefoot shoes ever). Only took a few weeks of daily wearing to adjust to barefoot shoes. Now I need to add more shoes to my stash so I can get rid of all of my ‘bad’ shoes. As far as stack height, I am not opposed to having a bit more stack height for running errands (i.e. Costco’s concrete floor)! I think the Lem’s will be a good future purchase to add to the line up. Not sure if I’ll work out in them?? I did take my Prio’s hiking in the Arizona desert (mile in mile out, easy hike) - The ability to feel the rocks beneath my feet was amazing! Thanks for such an in depth review 😊

Do you think it has too much stack height? We've talked a lot about where that line might be when it comes to stack height and how thin a sole has to be in order to be considered "barefoot". We don't have a number yet, wondering what your opinion on that might be.
@bb4prelude73
@bb4prelude73 9 месяцев назад
@@sonsofsever I believe so .. but in my opinion it's a good thing. The primal 2 s used to be my go to recovery shoes from my barefoot shoes ( merrel vapor glove , vivo shoes ) but then the primal zen came out . When ever I have high mileage or some gnarly works outs and want my walk not to feel like I have to limp to walk properly in barefoot shoes . Welp the primal zen is there. Also as was pointed in the video this shoe can be used casually. Which is a big win. This shoe is definitely a good into barefoot shoe only because the stack height is not huge like most shoes .. but because it's not a squishy shoe . That's the only reason I see it being a good intro shoe . Also I agree this might be a better intro shoe even compared to a shoe like altra escalante racer . Because it doesn't have a bounce to it .
@dpayne1943

I would agree with you. I can't wear true "barefoot" due to medical reasons (rocks and other objects are too painful for me). But I want to wear zero drop and wide toe shoes for me feet and posture, so Lems have been a Godsend.

6:00 and following is super important. It is so easy to hop on every new fad. Keto, vegan, carnivore, barefoot, whatever. We say things like “humans used to do _____” as if that was optimal. Humans also used to be dead by age 40. Balance is the key. Take what works from each fad and discard the rest. It seems like Lems has figured that out.

Thanks for these reviews, they’re extremely helpful. Quick question: would you recommend the Freet Vibe over the Lems Primal 2? (Currently using Vivo Trail FG ~5.5mm stack height). I’m looking for a shoe with a moderate stack height that would be a bit more comfortable for road running and jump roping. My one foot is flatter than the other, and I always have to end workouts early due to arch pain.

Thank you very much for the video. I'm using the translator in case you notice something strange in my text. I have been wearing minimalist shoes 24 hours a day for 9 years and to date I have not found anything better for running than my huaraches with 10 mm sole height. When I use my vivobarefoot to go on outings of more than 15 kilometers I don't have such a good feeling because I lack a thick sole like my huareches. I was looking for shoes that offered me the same performance and without discomfort as my huaraches. I don't know if the Primal 2 with 9mm height would be enough or the Zen model with 11mm. I'm hesitating between those two...I'll use your link when I decide! Thank you

I walk 10 miles a day for my job, work outside, coming in from a cushioned brooks running shoe, that only lasted 6 months before I wore a hole through the bottom, I got the primal zens and they feel like a second skin because of the cork insole, molds to your feet but still has some slight cushioning. It’s the perfect shoe for me. In black, no one can tell they’re any different from a regular running sneaker. I think they’re for sure my go to dedicated running shoe, I just want something a little tougher and more durable for hiking.

I wish there was a water resistant version of these, with slightly grippier profile. Otherwise my favourite shoe ever. Bought two spares (hope they don't dry out, storing them a few years). 6:08 Exactly, started with Vivos but those 4 mm soles on hard concrete floors make no sense. And they make no sense in nature because not enough grip, i like the Vivos with the firm ground profile though.

Well ... can i just confess i choose these because of how beautiful they are ? I was about to go for Xero's and i could have a good deal second hand but i just want to look at his feet with these. Just came here to say maybe some of us will buy for the looks (subjective i know) and if it handles everyday activities the better, he is not an athlete, he trains 2x a week and has a job that isnt too formal so these could be the "everything" kind of shoe :)

I have 2 pairs of the Primal Zen and 3 pairs of Primal 2. If you have a high instep, whiuch I do, then getting the Zen on is not easy. The issue is the gusseted tongue which is different to others. Firstly, unlike other gusseted tongues the Zen has no elastic between the tongue and the shoe, it is rock solid. Secondly, the gusseted section extends up to just below the second set of lace holes. In short you can open the shoe up very little to put them on. Once on I find them very good but because they are so hard to get on thy would never for me be a shoe to just put on and go across the road to the shop. I am US 9.5 in Brooks and New Balance and 4E width. My Primal 2 are 10 because of no half sizes but they are fine. I have 10.5 in the Zen.
@sonsofsever

I have been tempted to cut through the gusseting but I have a feeling it may have a bearing on the Zen shoes are. I no longer run because I have a knee replacement but I walk very fast and I gfind the Zen are much closer in feel to Brooks Ghost 14 than they are to the Primal 2. I can't see how just another 2mm of stack height would make that much difference. Although the soles are a solid flat bottom for the full length whereas the Primal 2 solses are clear of the ground berween the heel and the ball of the foot and that probably makes a difference.@@sonsofsever One thing I tried the other day with my Prima2 was to out a second set of insoles in them, actual Primal 2 insoles which you can buy. Wore these for a few months now. They have held up very well, especially for being completely synthetic. I wouldn't suggest for people with flatfeet because this style of large stack with noarch will make it worse. I worked on a farm this summer in nothing but these and some snake gaiters and they were great. I suggest buying extra laces because the included ones are quite flimsy. They can handle mild wet asfar as i can tell. Got lost in the woods and walked in a creek for about 2 hours and these were fine. The best part is the aerated rubber sole. Much more squeaky than a foam, but way more durable. I wish they had a slightly wider fit at the toes because they cramp my pinky, but your mileage may vary. Overall, good shoe, especially for people who havent used a barefoot shoe yet. I rotate them with some softstar primal Sawyers (recently had a 50 dollar price cut; highly reccomended for business casual) and some sandals from that Vermont company with the dumb name that you can get customized for about 110 for your exact foot.

@sonsofsever
@sonsofsever 10 дней назад
I think it’s a real issue. We’ve been wearing shoes for a long time as a species. This has not allowed our feet to evolve to the modern surfaces we deal with. Foot protection has been used for thousands of years and I think for good reason. Our feet won’t adapt to high impacts on those “modern surfaces.” Not saying you can’t train your feet and legs and toughen them up. But i think that has its limits. Your feet will never be tougher than concrete and asphalt

Whereas the 10.5s have about 2.5 cm (an inch approx). I have these. Love them, but the plastic on the side started cracking after a month of use :-( purely cosmetic, but unacceptable quality issue.

What plastic on the sides?
@SwissFamily2000
@SwissFamily2000 9 месяцев назад
@@uli3119 If you freeze frame on 3:27 you can see the light grey plastic material right where the shoe bends from normal walking (See where the laces end and then go down until you get to the sole, just above is the plastic). Like many shoes that is a weak spot and it started cracking after a week of walking. They can solve this easily by using a different material.

I am going out on a limb here: I am pretty sure there were rocks long before modern shoes were invented. Primitive man was probably well suited for walking on hard surfaces.

That’s a great point! My argument to that is that most of us take our first steps on soft surfaces. And as soon as our parents can they cram our feet into ultra padded restrictive shoes. So our feet are not used to rocks and other hard surfaces. I appreciate the limb you’re out on, cause I agree. But we gotta work with what the modern age has given us to a degree haha which is why I love these shoes 😂

@@sonsofsever I read an account of civil war soldiers fighting with no boots. Getting that toughness back is challenging.

Pretty sure primitive man had to walk carefully to prevent damaging their feet and dying from infections. Modern shoes allow us to move with high speed and land on surfaces that would cripple primitive humans.

@@gullintanni Sounds well reasoned but I would need more evidence in order to agree with your hypothesis.

“Lots of options for colors” 😂 yeah, since when did 3 options constitute “LOTS”?

There's actually six. Three in the microfiber and three in the suede. That's lots to me 😅

Why wouldn’t you want them as a dedicated hiking shoe?
@sonsofsever
@sonsofsever 10 месяцев назад
The outsole isn't really built for it. For light hikes sure, they'll be great, but if you're doing anything long or technical you'd probably want something with more stack height and better grip, depending on how well your feet are adjusted to minimal shoes.

These are excessively expensive, have poor durability and are an unattractive design. There is plenty of alternative footwear that can be found that does a similar job for far less money and will last several 100 miles more. If they could be kept below a price of $100 and be made to last without premature damage to the fabric and adhesive fixed sole, then they might be worth trying. For now, I'll continue with my Kenivel trainers that were bought in 2006 in Spain for about 45€. They have a soft wide toe-box, low drop and have only been resoled twice in 17 years. Only recently is some of the stitching at the heel seam started to give, so I'll need to replace them soon. They still get used for regular martial arts training on gravel and hard floor surfaces.

Did you have a pair that started to fall apart? Interested to know how many miles you got out of them before they broke down.

Nope. Topo and FiveFingers are WAY better, bro.
@sonsofsever
@sonsofsever 10 месяцев назад
Better at what though? Topo are purely athletic shoes, no casual use to them at all. I guess there are some "casual" FiveFingers but I've never seen anyone wearing them. I love toe shoes, but you can bet the only thing I'm doing with them is exercising. Obviously the Zens aren't perfect for athletic activities, but they can do enough AND they are fantastic everyday sneakers. Agree to disagree sir.
