Yeah no kidding. Fun decade. It just really sucks. One day you’re single, 28, and no worries in the world except paying rent, cruising with this song playing. Then you wake up one day in a post 9/11, post pandemic world where social media has infected the senses of people, and realize you’re 53, two kids, mortgage, arthritis in a knee, fighting back pain, and realizing the last 25 years flew by in a blink. 😢 That fun innocence of youth in a world where much fewer people were angry, it’s never coming back.
I remember watching them on VH1’s One Hit Wonders and they were super chill about it. Something like “if you ever have a chance to become a one bit wonder you should totally take it” with big smiles
Self awareness like that is so awsome, a lot of them think so much higher of themselves like they are rock gods or something, looking at you twisted sister
Damn catchy no doubt, but it's a little disappointing that the main hook, the keyboard and cowbell ostinato, was entirely lifted from a disco song. I guess Len deserves credit for bringing it to attention and elevating it.
How sweet would it be to be a "one hit wonder"? You get a bunch of money and experience a ton of stuff, meet people, then return to being a "regular" person with a normal life. Being famous would suck, I think. But being famous for a year would be okay.
@@christophermichaelfuller5448what’s worse? Having 400 bucks in your bank account and your bills are due in a couple of days Or being a one hit wonder celebrity for a moment, making bank, investing and never having to worry about money again. Being rich and famous is what you make of it.
Used to DJ a disco themed night at a dive bar. Occasionally I'd play "More, More , More" and loop the break. I'd let it play until someone started singing "Steal My Sunshine", which happened each and every time without any prompt from me. Good times, great song.
My son's name is Chance. I had only known one person named Chance before I had my son 32 years ago . Now it's a more common name.. I really wanted it to be a unique name.
@@ROOKTABULA Oh ferchrissake. The word is heinously vague, and you know it. The "Rock n Roll" Hall of Fame has acts in it that are less "rock" than this. Don't be a freakin' pedant. Call it "pop" if it gets your panties in a twist that much.
@@ROOKTABULA Len's Allmusic entry classifies them as "Pop/Rock" and their genres are "Alternative Dance", "Alternative/Indie Rock", "Contemporary Pop/Rock", so take it up with them.
Glad they're happy and that they love their song. I hear it and am taken back to the 1990s when I was in my 20s and my wife was alive and the world was new to us.
Honestly, I didn’t hate these guys. I had the album, and it had so many different styles being tried out. As a kid at the time, it was a fun record, it introduced me to Biz Markie, had some hip hop influence, some punk influence, and as a 14 year old in a small town, was one of the first records that made me go chasing the artists they referenced.
I liked Steal My Sunshine, it's a fun song that puts a smile on your face. I remember their album and I thought it was pretty good, though I don't remember any of their other songs.
@limelight81 maybe not the worst, but I remember us making fun of it because it was on every second . I remember going to boxing/Jiu-Jitsu class and laughing all the way there and back, so there were great memories attached to it for me. I dunno. It just isn't a song I like. I think I use it as a tool for recognizing/remembering people, times, and places from around that time. The buzz of the new millennium filled the air, and we were excited beyond belief. We even said then that to have this little, silly pop number be associated with "Y2K" seemed so superficial at the time, yet appropriate afterwards. Oh well. It's a song.
I always thought these two were a couple. When I heard they were brother and sister I had to watch the video again just to see if I had a dirty mind. After watching the video again, I gotta say Jamie and Cersei Lanister vibes are all over that thing.
Sadly, they went the way of EMF, Young MC, Hoobastank, Driving n Cryin, Bay city Rollers, MC Hammer, the Outfield, Haddaway,, The Calling, OMC. Insert yours:
He's redone a few of his much older videos. Personally I think it makes a lot of sense. He has a pretty big back catalog of videos from when his channel was much much smaller, and his video making skills were much lower.
@@chrisfrench8006 Sid tells me he's got more new ones on the way. The Vertical Horizon story was a new one. Mazzy Star was sort of a repeat. Stay subbed to RNRTS. You might miss something brand new.
Peak 1999 nostalgia, love it! I wish I'd known the name of it back then, I just remember catching parts of it playing in stores and wondering who it was by, but it was way harder to search for music then, so I just forgot about it. It became a half remembered relic of my childhood, until everything 90's came back into style and it was featured on Mr. Robot.
Always wondered what happened to this group, great information and narration. Thanks for this one! Seems like they’re doing ok. Keep up the great work I really enjoy your videos 🤟😎👍
I remember the late 90s and early 2000s in Southern Ontario well.. it was my childhood. This song was both iconic and worthy of ridicule. I never thought I'd say this, but right now I miss those days so much.
Len yes!! You can’t stop the Bumrush was the first album I ever purchased/heard as a little kid in 99-2000 and I’ve heard it thousands of times and it just does not get old I love Len and love that Record. Such Nostalgia every time I see that album cover art. Thanks for the video Rock and Roll True Stories!
It's an ok song, I think it's the only one if theirs I've ever heard. GO is an awesome movie, though. Lol, it was pretty funny, being from SoCal, as soon as I was like "Why did he pronounce KROQ like that?" Was when I saw the disclaimer 😄
I was playing the cd one day and I got asked where I had found all the different artists/songs that were playing. I told them it was one group and one album but nobody believed me. Still one of my favorite albums of all time.
I know this was a dumb pop song but I was born in 87', I wasn't even drinking or smoking weed when this track came out but it was the song of my summer and I still love it. I throw it in Playlist still and ita genuinely in my top 10 favorite songs. The lyrics are surprisingly amazing I realized when I got older. You guys agree?
Born in 87 too, was more into my hardcore and drum n bass when I was 12 (blame the kids at school lol I went on to be a dnb dj) but I did like a few chart tunes and this was one of them.
@@nickluslifts I'm at work but if you really want my opinion I will write it out. To me it's far deeper than anyone gives it credit for and is actually insightful and poignant!
We also need to give LEN credit for collaborating more than once with Biz Markie making some really beautiful songs. He must have liked working with them. RIP Biz xx
I am (and always will be) a huge 80's music fan. I remember when this came out. At that time I didn't like 90's music. But now, after listening to today's music, I love the 90's. Bring it all back please. This IS a great song.
5:52 is totally incorrect. Vice began as a culture/fashion magazine in 1994 and was founded by Shane Smith, Gavin McInnes and Suroosh Alvi. It seems Marc Costanzo still had ties to Montreal and was friends with those guys. I found an article that says he used to pass out the stickers they printed to promote the magazine. He even slapped a few on the scooters they ride in the "Steal My Sunshine" video.
I only know 1 thing; literally, know nothing else ... at all, and that is, Sharon was cute as fk. I'd love to see what she's looking like these days, but it's impossible to dig up anything recent on her online. 🤷🏽
That Go soundtrack was one of the best at the time and Len's SMS was that one song that stuck in your head. Didnt hurt that the movie was pretty good too.
Their album was amazing!! Still listen to it. Holy Crap!!! Mark lives in Nashville! I LIVE IN NASHVILLE!!! LEN LIVES HERE!!! WOOT!! God I love this town.
I remember the very pregnant lady in the video. Hopefully she wasn’t taking part in the alcohol during the shooting. Her kid has got to be in their early 20’s now.
I remember hearing Steal My Sunshine and thinking it was a brilliant pop song. Then they put out a song called Doing Alright and it was complete dogshit. Absolutely terrible.
It’s definitely the story of how lazy partiers with no musical ability were able to fabricate a single mid-level hit. And then not even want to get up off the couch long enough to properly tour or do anything else hard.
You can see a Vice logo sticker on the scooter handlebar. Makes me curious about Marc Costanzo 's involvement in the creation of Vice Magazine and how it evolved from skate mag into the website, and TV channel it's become.
Ryan Somers (from OK Cobra) was responsible for that, he was friends with Marc and at the time lived with him and was working for Vice at the same time, he was invited down for the shoot and it was basically subliminal advertising. They stickerbombed the whole of Daytona
The song is great BUT it's all about the piano break More More More sample & the drums.... almost anyone could have sung almost anything over that & it would still be catchy as a pop hit
so they had a couple of crap albums...then he stole the cowbell off Andrea True's More More More and looped it, had a hit off her record and never had anything else that was any good. They couldnt handle touring with only one song, cancelled their tour, broke their record deal...conned another company that they had an album full of hits, got paid 3/4 million dollars based on that and turned garbage out after that. Not even a one hit wonder, a sampled stolen song hit wonder.
Man I love all your videos. But we never get to hear anything musically by the artist or song you’re discussing. It just feels disconnected. I understand RU-vid and the whole de-monetization for playing music thing. But. the music is the story you’re telling. And it would only help to hear clips of the songs or even studio outtakes. Just a constructive comment and Keep it up!
hated that song so bad lol (like many late 90s pop songs). she was cute though. it wasn't so bad looking back on it. todays pop is a million times worse
LEN was completely underrated in their time. I remember finding a promo cd of Diary of the Madmen and playing it over and over in the summer of 2002. The weird mesh of hip hop and rock made the albums so eclectic since their songs jumped from moody 70s throwbacks to thrashing punk.
6:30, that's a video switcher console, not a recording studio console. I suppose there's not a lot of video of this band floating around out there, so ya sorta just have to fill it with stock clips. Works just the same on this one! The audio is often more important than the video.
