Welcome to Belcourt! The home of socialite Oliver Hazard Perry Belmont and later his wife Alva Vanderbilt. In this episode Jay Leno and Donald Osborne, explore the history of what once was a massive, one bedroom, "bachelor pad". Hear Donald and Jay discuss the ties to the automobile, that both Belcourt and Belmont had. Explore the history of the Type 57 Bugatti from the driver's seat, its comparison to the Bentleys of the time, the 1961 Renault 4CV, and a Bugatti example that's just a "little" faster than the Type 57.

Leno and Osborne have a wonderful chemistry together... each has their own set of anecdotes for each car they present, both interesting and usually representing their different points of view. The fact that Jay brings his sense of humor out to play is just a bonus! I am thoroughly enjoying the Audrain Mansion series...

Great episode once again. A note to Jay. In all fairness I recall that Henry Ford did hire craftsmen in the early days of the Model T. These were furniture and cabinet makers for the wooden portions of the car. These craftsmen would typically get bored working the assembly line, and would quit and return to the more creative work they enjoyed. The $5.00 working day was partly a response to that.
@kevinfleming9919
@kevinfleming9919 2 года назад
He was referring to the fact that, unlike Bugatti, Ford didn't have people sitting around making detailed woodwork for the cars with furniture quality finishes and joints, but instead focused on timed assembly line work to get out as many parts and cars in a shift as they could with as little total labor hours for each one required as possible so he would have less money invested in each one and could then sell them cheap so more people could afford them. There were craftsmen working there but they weren't doing "craftsmanship" level work on the interiors.
@fishhuntadventure
@fishhuntadventure 2 года назад
@@kevinfleming9919 Exactly. Never mind the fact that the prior post sortof had this tone that suggested teacup-tipping high brow artists were the “wood workers and cabinet makers” which may be what they are in our time. But even in the early 1900s woodworkers and cabinet makers were more of a tradesmen - like plumbers or carpenters. Or a boatwright or wheelwright. The stuffy high-browed image of a ‘cabinetmaker’ selling in a posh Philadelphia boutique furniture store was less common then than it is now.

@1.17 on the bottom left screen label, the correct spelling is Ventoux from the mountain of the same name Mont Ventoux south east ot France where a hill climb race used to take place in the 20 and 30 s where Bugatti were testing some of their models. Great scenery, that location is regularly used for the Tour de France bicycle race.

I like Jay's Garage format better than this driving / design presentation. You get under a car, inside, all around the machine. This RI neighborhood tour doesn't give me a long enough, detailed look at The Car. I know it's about the history of the Cottages, then show us the garages, carriage barn/house. The chauffeur's residence and work shop. Car maintenance life at the turn of the century. From shoveling horse poo to greasing the Rolls chassis. Great series 👍👍👍👍👍💋 🇫🇷🇺🇲✌️

Bonjour mon ami ! You made me chuckle with your rendition of Dominique 🎶 😄 That Renault certainly looked a lot older than 1961 . And a very interesting point about the French not building luxery cars . But alas the Bugatti has 4 banks of 4 cylinders. It actually says so on the cam covers. ie 3 doesn't go into16 ! Come on guys ! Your singing is wonderful but your maths has a lot of catching up to do ! Entertaining as always thankyou gentlemen .

@TheGel69
@TheGel69 Год назад
the 4 cv (quatre chevaux) Renault is actually not later than 1953 because of the "six whiskers" in the front (six moustaches) produced between 47-53, in 54 Renault went to 3 whiskers on the 4cv and even down to a single whisker on fleet commercial versions...this particular car might have been relabeled 1956 after being brought into the States. really cool ride, the decouvrable was the top of the line back then

Jay it is not in 3 banks it is a V, the cylinders are in 2 banks but each bank has two rows of cylinders arranged in a VR configuration so it is a VVR or a VRV or a double V, or VV, which can be written as a W. Each bank has 2 rows of 4 cylinders staggered so it is short. It has one crankshaft. The Napier Lion was a broad arrow 3 banked triple 4 cylinder W 12, it is confusing when the same term is used in different applications, the term Rotary can be used as a rotating Radial engine as well as a Wankel engine. You truely are a Renaissance man or what ever term the French would use
@kevinfleming9919
@kevinfleming9919 2 года назад
4 banks not 2. It has 2 heads and each one has 2 banks of cylinders in it. Each row of cylinders is a bank with one turbo for each bank making it a 4 turbo W16. If it was a "V" all the cylinders on each side would in a straight line and at a 65 - 90 degree angle. This is a"W" because each side of the engine has narrow angle 15 degree V making it look kind of like a W if you put them against each other even though a letter W is 2 V's joined at the top and this is 2 V's joined at the bottom.

The tragedy of all these great french marques is that many of their owners were willing collaborators with the nazis ! As a result, these cars found no respect, funding or sales in the postwar eraand taxed out of existence ! The communist hated them and the right wing bosses preferred a "socially acceptable" Citroen sedan. It's unfair as cars dont vote but that is what history has done to them. For more information, check out the PONCE plan of 1945 : it shows how the industry essentially belonged to Renault, Peugeot and Citroen with a bit going to Panhard, Ford and Simca ...
