thanks for the reply, Hi I got my legion go in the UK , Should i have power indicators when the unit is off, i only have power indication when the unit is on , the unit works and plays and charges , but when its off , there are no lights , is this Normal thanks >>>?????
I have taken the back off again and fitted it to be honest, better to be safe than sorry, total pain in the a@@e working out where to start peeling from lol but all done. Great video thuogh and thanks for the help@@okestgamer
I just recv''d my "Legion Go" 1/30/24. Thank You for all the the steps you provided; I am even amazed how I was even able to upgrade it to a 2TB(from a 512GB). I am a senior citizen, it is definitely gone take some time to get used to this. Normally play w/ my PS5. THANKS AGAIN!!!!!!!
Did this today. Massive help watching this. The foil shield was a right bastard to sort & take off the HDD. Just about managed it. Got a faster 1tb drive all cloned and working. You gained a sub and thanks again
Thank you so much, followed all the steps. Everything Worked perfectly! Did have some trouble when it came to screwing on the 30-60 adapter to the SSD and removing the battery cable during the process but everything else went smoothly. The only thing I did differently was take the shielding off the original SSD and transfer it to the new one. I now have a 2TB SSD and a 1.5 TB MicroSD card inside my legion.
Good video, easy to follow and installation was a breeze. NOTE: If you didn't get the NVME 2230 Adapter you can carve your guitar pick into one using scissors. This worked perfectly for me.
Excellent clean video. No bs. I ordered that same little adaptor on your advice… arrived in 2 weeks . . . Which is probably fine since my legion go still hasn’t shipped
I love that the manufacters of this handhelds ( also on steam deck ) make that easy to change the ssd´s on the devices and not to hide them deep under other components. I thought i could stay happy with my steam deck until version #2 arrives but i´m honest this Legion Go makes my finger which always clicks "order button" quite nervous. 🤣
I agree. I got mine yesterday and I'm loving it so far. I'm installing a 2tb now just waiting for the cloning to finish up. I still love my Steam Deck but being 50 my eyes are getting bad and that 8.8 inch screen looks nice 🎉
Thank you so much OKestGamer for the detailed process, good thing that no need to remove the stock SSD for you to do the cloning, this will be my guide once i received mine, by the way new subs here..
just upgraded mine with 1tb drive. thanks for the tutorial. the foil quite hard to peel, mine got some tearing apart lol. but my set, the battery connector was hard to pull out, so I let it stay plugged in during swap. So when I turn on the console, the booting is instant.
Glad it worked out for you! Sometimes when the battery is left in, it can short something during the swap (has happened on some other devices to folks I talked with).
Thank you for another amazing video Okest! This is a big help for me since I’m not too knowledgeable with any cloning. Looking forward for more Go videos
FYI, there is a built-in tool within windows to make an image from an existing computer, then apply that image to another computer. It is a subset of commands within DISM, but its not for everyone because it is command line. but basically you boot from a Windows 2 Go USB drive, capture the original SSD making sure you will have access to the captured image after pulling the old SSD out(weather your windows 2 go disk is big enough for the image, or if you have an M.2 to USB adapter) Use RUFUS on another computer to create a bootable install disk from the captured image, and then boot from this disk after getting the new SSD installed. I personally like to start fresh from a new drive, and i usually wipe the OEM drive before i start using a new computer, i dont trust that its clean.
That sounds like another great option. I mainly target newer users with the guides, so I pick easy to use software. I can definitely appreciate starting with a fresh install as well though. I've done that with other devices.
@@okestgamer Since its built into windows, i really hope Microsoft just goes ahead and makes a GUI to migrate from one drive to another, with a checkbox telling it that its the same computer, or a different computer that requires different drivers.
Great video thanks. I fitted cloned and fitted a 2tb (double sided) 2242 SSD. Didn't need a dock though as I laid the Legion Go flat and powered through the bottom USB.
Just did the swap. Other than completely destroying the foil and a few nervous moments waiting for boot it went well. 1TB is a much more usable capacity.
also word of advice to anyone else doing this in the future, if you're using a win11 media creation tool (or lenovo recovery media) instead of copying the SSD, make sure to remove your SD card, sat there for 1 hour with nothing happening because it was in the system and confusing things lol.
Thank you for putting me at ease over using the extender. I was afraid it would cause issues with contact points. One question though, is there a reason why you didn't move the shielding over from the OEM drive to the new drive/extender?
It's the other way arround... the SSD generate interference with the wifi signal. It should still works, but with more dropped packages (ending with slower speeds and probably higher ping in online games)
Your video production looks great now, I'm just curious if i just want a clean install does the BIOS have something similar to rog ally that it installs everything on a brand new hard drive
Thanks for the video but it looks like they want you to register a new account now just to use use their trial. I sort of didn't want to do this but I guess I don't have any other choice unless I look for another video. 😊
@@okestgamer yeah no paying right now either. I'm upgrading from my 512GB to 2TB rn but the cloning is taking longer than I expected. It's been like an hour now and it's only 61% done hehe. Well I did load up the 512GB almost to the max so hehe. I noticed in your video you didn't tho. Either way it's better than having to reinstall everything
@@okestgamer thx. Mine is at 80% now. I did walk away from my Go earlier but I have it set to not power off while plugged in. I thought it would be done by the time I came back but I guess not. It might've slowed down while I was gone. Either way I should be done in another 20 mins or so.
Hello, yes you can. Early on near launch, some had issues relating to the USB c power. This was an effort to alleviate that through a powered dock. I've heard of a number of folks having no issues plugging in directly.
Yeah that will over heat and damage your screen. Don't use the cheap m.2 Microcenter was using, and you need the heat shield off your old one plus put a thermal pad on it if you plan on going bigger then 1TB. I would go Gen3 2TB, or Gen4 1TB, nothing higher.
Hasn't overheated at all under stress. There was definitely issues with the microcenter ones though. If you're worried, there is also some community made backplates that have ventilation
So wait can I use my anker 737 power bank for this process? Kind of a noob but I wanna do this and the cloning is a bit confusing, are using the cloning download/website on the legion go itself with the device plugged into the power bank and the new ssd plugged in the other slot on my power bank?
You should be fine, you can also just use the wall charger and other port as the SSD. In the early launch days there was USB power issues, so I suggested a dock early in because of that.
How crucial is the foil shield on the new ssd? I couldn’t cleanly get the one off the old ssd so I just put the new one in. I’ve been monitoring heat and it seems fine but I wanna get maybe another shield online but the adhesive on the old ssd was crazy sticky!
If you get a Legion Go from Microcenter they offer an upgrade from from the 512 model (only size in store) , to a 1tb $750 or to a 2tb for $800. So $50 more from the 1tb to a 2tb.
Technically yes, but also no. It’s soldered to the board, so it would take a person with skills in removing and replacing components, after that they would need to modify the bios.
Thanks for your support! Cloning is good due to maintaining the drivers and everything as it was originally setup. If you start fresh with windows you need to make sure you get all the drivers from the manufacturer. This just makes it much simpler for the upgrade process. Aside from that, all files are also kept intact
I will use dynamite to open up my Lenovo Go... Then l can easily get to all the components and all l will need to do os just reassemble it and walla l did my upgrade
Question about cloning with new device. If the unit is brand new straight out the box and I update everything first could I just swap out the old ssd card with new 2TB one will it work with out cloning or is cloning required at all times? I watched a video on RU-vid but he had the ROG ALLY and all he had to do was updated everything first software firmware all that stuff then installed his 2TB ssd and just powered everything up all working fine he didn't have to clone the ssd card, could this also work on legion go? Another question is there a difference between the 2230 or the 2242 cos I've come across a few videos like this one as well using 2230 ssd is the 2230 better or something in performance or is it just cheaper to buy then the 2242 one
At launch a 2230 was cheaper than 2242 (not sure on prices today). You will need to clone to have your files, drivers, or really anything present on the SSD. The other video you would have watched for the ROG Ally is likely a cloud recovery option that is present in the ROG Ally bios (I did a video on that as well). That option is not present on the legion Go, so cloning is your best option.
@okestgamer yeah cool thanks for the info I ended up buying the ssd enclosure and a 2230 2Tb gen4 with also the extender and a heat sink to go with it hopefully it will keep temps down just waiting on parts to arrive now, I also bought that silver foil that goes around the ssd for a 2230 I guess it would save me time pulling off the old one and destroying it out of the 2242 which probably won't sit nice on the 2230 with the extender bracket
Can you please give me advice ? I have 2tb ssd in steamdeck with dual boot and want to use it in legion go. Should I format it when conecting via enclosure and than follow your guide ?
Personally the one I used in the video is a great option. It runs cool enough that heat hasn't been an issue. You just need that little extension piece I used.
Do I really need to buy the whole $75 ifixit kit just to upgrade the ssd? This seems a little steep. Is there a cheaper option that's only have the required tools for this particular upgrade?
What SSD do you recommend i was looking at the corsair 600 mini or western digital black and not sure which is better? Doing the clone pulls everything including the bios updates so its ready to go no additional set up correct?
Sorry for delayed reply I had not seen this. I personally used the 2230 ssd with an adapter. I got the sabrent. Cloning should carry absolutely everything over
I bought a similar ssd adapter but noticed that it lifts the ssd a bit and the middle screw touches the board, i have added a piece of tape on that middle screw and used the foil that came with the original ssd to avoid any short. Do you have the same issue with your adapter?
One thing is it could be the boot order issue. That or maybe during the cloning you may not have copied all partitions. For that menu, you likely will need to use the dpad.
In the tutorial portion of macrium reflect you want to make sure to click shrink or expand storage. I briefly go over that in the video and you can see the new drive has the main portion expanded
@@okestgamer I ended up cloning the ssd. I cloned the SSD from Lenovo to the SSD from ROG, which is 1tb. so I had everything I needed there. However, the problem was that the 1tb SSD looked like 500Gb😱 Anyway, according to the instructions, I expanded the SSD to 1tb and hooray. everything works
do you know if the Legion comes with "Windows 11 Home" or "Windows 11 Pro" out of the box? I recently upgraded my SSD without cloning and am not sure which windows to download. Does windows 11 home vs pro even have an effect on gaming? I'm just in fear that installing the wrong windows version would collide/cause some of the legion go drivers not to function properly. Thanks for your time
Getting that silver insulation tape of the stock SSD drive is almost impossible to get off in a condition to be able to apply to the new SSD. Is there any other form of insulation tape you can use to put on the new SSD? I tried putting the silver tape from the original SSD on the new one but the unit went bang and no longer works, I presume it shorted out the unit from not being covered correctly?
so if you clone you done need the key and you will have windows and legion space right ? and if i cant get the clone to work does the key come with legion space ?
Early on some folks mentioned issues with the usb disconnecting so I suggested the dock because it can be powered. In the end it seems that solution wouldn’t have addressed the previous issue anyways.
You should be able to plug in directly, I had heard some users had some issues with external SSDs directly so I included the dock option so the ssd is powered in hopes it would help
Hard to say early on, but it seems to have more features for the price. It depends on whether you want a smaller light one or a larger heavier one. Performance is very similar, with a small advantage in favour of the legion Go
I am using a 2230 sabrent. The cost was lower and performance was higher than the 2242 I was seeing online. I wanted to show an option for people wanting to reuse their steam deck or other ssd upgrades they were transferring over. Just to show other options.
@@okestgamer how do you check the performance of the ssd? i need a guide if what kind of ssd should i pick for my legion go. should i go for 2240 or modified 2230?
You should be ok to use. Some users had some issues with external storage connecting and disconnecting. I figured maybe having a powered dock could alleviate (helped me with a different device that did that) so included it as a safeguard.
Everything went fine on the cloning, but legion go is not showing my new ssd in bios so will not boot into os, any ideas? the ssd is a kingspec which I saw used in another vid
