I really love that you dedicate time and effort to reviewing these more affordable options. I feel like most techtubers think these budget machines are beneath them. It's great to see and compare what you get (or don't) in an IdeaPad vs a Legion 5 or 7.
I totally agree with, we need more people reviewing budget tech. A lot of people get really bad advice and are kinda force to buy expensive stuff that they will never use fully.
I really appreciate that you tested the laptop with Ubuntu to check Linux support. I daily drive Linux and this is extremely important to me when buying a Laptop 🙏❤️
Thanks for the tip about getting the bottom off.. helped me get my Gaming3 i5 upgraded, added 16gb ram to the single 8 it came with and and a 2TB SSD. Didn’t break anything thanks to you. :)
happened to me, bought the ideapad gaming 3 with ryzen 5 5600&1650, not knowing theres a legion 5 with almost the same price but with ryzen 5 4600&1650ti. rookie mistakes man damn
I used to do a bigger variety of laptops in the past, but they were never received as well as the gaming laptop videos, so I pretty much only do gaming laptops now. Occasionally, I'll make videos on other types of laptops if there is something interesting about them though.
Hey Jarrod, after years of watching your content, I finally got myself the same budget gaming you reviewed, but the AMD variant, which I decide from your previous review of AMD Vs Intel (the current generations), I prefer the battery/portability, mine specs is 15 inch, 165Hz AMD 5 6600H, 16 DDR5 rams, 512 SSD, 3050 Ti as well and the battery for the AMD is 60Wh, got it in France for 750 Euros which at that time was equivalent to 750 dollars ... Many thanks Jarrod, always enjoying watching your reviews..
Got this laptop after watching. Been using for about a month, and it runs great. Most games on high at 120fps. Some demanding games (specifically Forza Horizon 4) prefer medium/high to stay around 100fps. Great laptop for the price
@@kath4rsis513 got the laptop on sale for around $850 knowing i would add another SSD (1TB was about $100) and the RAM. The motherboard only supports 16GB. It comes with 8, and a second stick was around $30 bucks
I bought this laptop and I am very happy with my purchase. Also upgraded the ram from 8 to 32gb and added extra 1TB 2242 nvme. I'm very happy with my first 165hz monitor at a very affordable proce
i just bought the 2021 ideapad gaming 3 and i think i prefered the smaller 2021 design, anyways i use the laptop for classes work and light gaming so i needed something not flashy.
When IdeaPad Gaming 3 trying to be a Legion. To me last year generation still has better design. They should have keep that simplicity and IdeaPad series identity. That would be great if 2021 generation just get higher specs while maintaining the same design.
I’m in China and the names here are different, legion 3, legion 5, legion 7 in China are called just 9000 series. For example if the laptop has AMD CPU it’s called Lenovo r9000, if its intel CPU than Y9000 series. The high-end, slim or budget versions are marked with letters X, P, K. As an example, Lenovo legion i7 in China is called Lenovo y9000k
I love this laptop for those who are on budget this is a must. I have 12500, 8gb, 3050ti 85w, 165hz for 900usd. Upgraded to 16 ram and honestly it runs perfectly. Haven't tested too many games but so far so good, all online fps, br games are maxed out. Doing cyberpunk now no bottlenecking at all at very high settings. Fans get a bit noisy but aren't you playing with headphones on anyways? Small cooling pad below and the temps are never high considering that I'm in a very hot environment as well. I know most would prefer 3060s but they are still a God tier in my region and I wasn't planning to game too much so I saved some cash on this one instead. Honestly it's a really great machine imo so I might even get back to heavy aaa titles which I haven't done in 5 years.
@@blueheartknight1747 sorry haven't measured with the apps. I have a really small cooling pad but I can tell the ventilation is top notch as it's on legions chassis. It never felt any hot if I check with a palm. Sorry don't have exact numbers.
@@blueheartknight1747 mine does get pretty loud but I'm using the headphones and at least fans are fighting the temps. Laptop doesn't get hot pretty much at all.
@@JarrodsTech Incidentally, I just bought one of these for my kid as their first gaming laptop. I got the i5, 3050 Ti model for $749+10% Rakuten cash back. It only has 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD, but I have extra memory and storage on hand to upgrade it. While it also has the 1080p/120 Hz screen, the laptop will be connected to a TV 95% of the time so that's not a big deal.
Hey Jarrod, love the videos and detailed reviews!! Is there anyway you could review the Legion 7 gen 7 AMD edition? With 6800h and 6700m. I am curious to see the benefits of the AMD Advantage. Even if not, keep up the good reviews!!!
Hey, after watching your videos for a long while I finally bought a laptop. It is an HP Victus and has the following specs, i5 11400H RTX 3050Ti 8GB 3200MHz Ram (might upgrade in future) 512GB SSD It cost me around 61k INR or around 765USD. Thanks for all the info and do you think it was worth at this price currently? Much love ❤️
@@xxzedlingxxyt9519 it's ok for the price but for $300 extra, you would have gotten a 3060 laptop which will play games coming out in next 5 years at 1080p 60fps high graphic settings without any issues. 3050ti laptop will definitely not play future games at 1080p 60fps without reducing graphic settings to low or without using dlss.
@@arico7923 3050ti for 60k INR is insane. You're talking from US perspective, here the cheapest 3060 laptop starts at 80k which is a massive jump. Sure getting 3050ti when you can get 3060 for the same price is really bad but if you can't even go till 3060 then 3050ti is good plus he got it much cheaper as most 3050ti laptops are between 70-80k. US people 🤦
Great job Jarrod! I found your page after i just purchased (3/23)on sale!, IdeaPad 3i special version for MicroCenter, it came with 16gig/ram, dual channel, I7 runs nice, I'm tempted to go 32gig (max it can handle) to help photoshop or video production. What really got me was you discovering it's strange method of opening! Thanks I would have broken it just like you!!
AWSOME review! i just bought one yesterday and this helped me alot understanding whati have in hands and im not disapointed for chosen lenovo! keep the good work men, really apreciated on this "budget" gaming laptops!
Worth mentioning, do not order an SSD before opening your unit. Even though in the video, at 6:40 this is mentioned, you could be fooled. Since these are manufactured in high quantities, they will use whatever is available. In my case, the unit had the longer SSD populated. This is especially true if the config is different that that of the video and the actual lot number differs as well.
I think this would be fairly decent with 3060 option and the 300 nit 1080P option. The 12650H is plenty, the 12700h difference is only extra E cores but the 12650H still a 6P+4E processor. Right now with 10% coupon it's the same that I paid for my 2021 Legion 7i though with 3070/16" G-Sync/1Tb/16GB so my advice is always to wait for Lenovo sales. For 2 grand AUD for the spec I mentioned above it's fine, for 2900 currently, at best with welcome coupon, it's not. Edit, no TBolt on 3060 = no way.
I found this 3060 version but it has an i5-12450h, not an 12650h; do you think its 0.5 extra inch and 165hz screen + better card compared to a Legion 5 with 15 inch, gtx 3050ti but better processor (i5-12500h) justify the choice for an extra $70? both with 16 gb ram; so the Legion is $970 and the IdeaPad is around $1040
Bought one of these on sale. I could not be happier with it. I DID, however, upgrade the stock ram to 16 GB. For the money, this might be one of the best gaming laptops if you’re on a budget.
Hi Jarrod , I really like the video you made , it is very detail and completely helpful when choosing computers. Is there a chance that you can test the victus 2022 with i5 12500H and RTX3060 , I think that may help me a lot, thank you so much !
WOW the de-essing on your voice is hysterical, must have some sort of processing on the input with Lenovo. They have over done it by about 10X. That's my job to know as this is what I do (audio professional), but that sounded funny Jarrod!
Yo jarrod thank you for covering this laptop was considering to buy it, mabe i should explore more options 😅 And if possible i heard of this new laptop called colorful X15, was exclusive to china but now going worldwide, comes with intel 12th gen Looks like a great laptop for the budget from the reviews i saw hope if you can get your hands on one it would be great for a in-dept review
The good thing about those with above 10 gen intel i5 i7 is that they got thunderbolt support by that i mean those 11 gen intel and 12 gen intel i5 i7 thunderbolt 4 offers alot of connectivity which makes it pretty future proof imo
Good to see they adopting legion design for ideapads too! I got my dad 2021 ideapad gaming 3i and ports are a mess as they increased fan size>>larger heat exhaust vents. all the ports are towards the user, not ergonomic at all. but hey i got it for $570 with 11320H/1650/8gb/60hz. he doesnt game just need it for productivity, screencasting. market is really weird right now, atleast in India. you cant get a decent 'home' use laptop below $600 with i5 and here i got one with dGPU! what I like about 2021 3i over my own 2020 ideapad 3 (4600h/1650/16gb) is that larger hinge, thermal pads everywhere, slimmer power brick like yours and included hdd bracket for later installation @Jarrod'sTech can you check one thing for me? when laptop is powered off can you wake it to go to smart novo menu by pressing only f9? I can do this on my amd ideapad but not on intel
The 1650 models from 2021 were just the old fan design but bigger lmao, the RTX 30 ones somehow adapted the Legion. Which is quite funny to think of it
Which of these will you guys pick? Acer Nitro 5 Lenovo Ideapad Gaming 3 HP Victus Gigabyte G5 GD Asus Tuf A15 MSI GFthin 63 Gonna get my laptop tomorrow and I'm still confused to this day. These are the only options I have based on my budget and availability. Thanks for those who will answer
It's a tough one I am buying from Amazon pay over 12 months so very limited, so far Lenovo ideapad 3 gaming Ryzen 5 5600h and rtx 3060 but only 8gb ram £66 a month or get the ASUS TUF Gaming FX506HM 15.6" 144Hz Full HD Gaming Laptop (Intel i7-11800H, Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060, 16GB RAM, 512GB at £75 ready to go it's just money and I want an rtx 3060 not matter what that is the minimum graphics card on the lenovo it's 85-90 watt graphics card so need to check out the power of the graphics card as the Lenovo Legion 5 etc are 130 watt rtx 3060 so a lot more powerful but also hotter
I had been looking for a while to replace my 4th gen Lenovo Thinkpad T450 with something that I could use both for work and gaming. I wound up finding one of these Ideapad Gaming 3 systems on sale. It's configured with an i5-12450H and an RTX3050 mobile, came with a single 8GB stick of RAM and a 512GB SSD all for $550. For $100 I added another 1TB SSD and put in 2 16GB sticks of RAM for 32GB. I think $650 all-in for that configuration was a pretty good deal.
Love your reviews. I found this at my local shop at a discounted price, I wonder if I should buy it. The specs are: -Intel Core i5-12450H Processor -16GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM (Single stick maybe?) -512GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD -Nvidia GeForce RTX3060 6GB GDDR6 -16" WUXGA(1920x1200) 165Hz IPS 350nits 100% sRGB Anti Glare Display
I feel like I'm gonna get a headache just from all the different laptop options and upgrades to choose from. I've been using the same old lenovo thinkpad laptop for almost about 5 years now. It's time for a new laptop and my dad agrees. He want's me to look for one with possibly a good deal online. It's hard to pick one because I feel like I want to keep whatever I get for as long as the the one I'm currently using, so for about 5 years. He bought me a "Lenovo 5 15IAL7", I'm not sure if I should ask him to return it and look for a better one though. 🤔
I’m in the same boat bro. I’m looking to buy my first gaming laptop and I keep looking at the ideapad gaming 3 but then I read that Lenovo sucks and dies after a year.
I got this laptop (AMD version 6600H/3050 Ti) and had bought a 2280 drive to double my storage to 1TB but when I took the back off to add another 8GB stick of DDR5 RAM and the SSD, mine came with a 2280 installed and it was the 2242 slot that was free. I still swapped out the 2280 intel SSD it came with since the Hynix I had was 3x faster but I'd say check before you buy either form factor which one your laptop has installed.
Hey Jarrod, I recently bought a Dell G15 5520 I got it for $1250 (US) And the specs are: - i7 12700H, RTX 3060, 16GB DDR5 RAM, 1TB PCIe Gen 4.0 (Upgraded to 2TB 980 Pro now) and 1080p 165Hz, Orange Backlit Keyboard Was it worth it?
@@JarrodsTech Yeah it is fine, but it has really weird problems, and sadly it has many BIOS related Bugs, every time I boot although I formatted it 3 times and tried Windows 11/10 and even Ubuntu shows me an error fan failed to start at BIOS, but I did not get blue screens, and the Alienware Fan control is really limited, but other than that it was running normally, I reset the BIOS twice, tried updating it, tried many things but sadly it would still give me the Fan error, anyways, I expected more from Dell, and also I really wanted it to support charging through Thunderbolt, as I will be taking it to school but that's also not there. also they removed an M.2 Slot, it has a place in the motherboard but they simply removed it, instead of putting a small bracket for 2280 slot which would probably cost them couple of cents, sad to see this happen, anyways everything else was fine.
hey Jarrod, may I ask that is the review of this year's Legion 5 coming soon? I'm still really considering whether to get a Legion 5 or 5 Pro, so your detailed review of the Legion 5 would really help. Thank you and keep up the great work!!
Thanks dude. Because of you, i know that to opening this laptop's back cover is a bit different and tricky, one mistake would be more than enough to break the laptop's body. So the thing is, unlike you, i able to open the back cover safely without any crack. And that's all because of you including the way to opening the laptop's back cover in this video. Thank you
On lenovos website many of their laptops often go on sale, and you can stack coupons on top of that. If you are military, first responder, etc you get another discount ontop of that. i saved 480 dollars on my laptop with this :)
4:54 does that mean you can only run one additional monitor for this laptop that uses the graphics card and when you plug another in the displayport 1.4 type c this one will have to work with the integrated graphics? Thanks in advance for your answer, this would really hold me away from buying this as I want to connect at least 2 Monitors..
Hey @JarrodsTech , thanks for the info! i am planning to buy a laptop for work and some gaming (from time to time) and i am considering either an IdeaPad Gaming 3 16IAH7 16" 165Hz or a Legion 5 15IAH7 15.6" 165Hz (both laptops with the i5-12450H processor +16GB/512GB). As their design is pretty similar (except some more premium materials on the Legion), which one would you recommend and why? (i find both in the same price - a bit less than 1000€) PS. I'd prefer my laptop not running hot or being noisy during day-to-day office use (as this will be my all-around PC) - so these are two basic criteria for me to choose. While gaming, some heat and sound are acceptable.
Hey Jarrod. I like your Reviews and bought the 67hx because of it. I’m an competitive gamer and I appreciate your display and system latency tests. For this specific test, which mice are you using? I think it could be important and could have an impact on your results. On the other side I think the System Latency Ingame differs on game to the other (CSGO to for example Valorant) or even just the desktop? Could you maybe test Valorant? When I see other system latency tests on normal desktop setups they have around 15-16ms. Could there be such a high difference? Would be nice if you could answer. Thomas
We use NVIDIA LDAT that simulates a click. No specific mouse used. The results are for comparison purposes and we won't be doing multiple games. Currently, the tool only supports a handful of games and Valorant isn't one of them. I've discussed why I don't test Valorant at all here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qp9oSFnkXdg.html
@@JarrodsTech hey thanks for your answer! I know the LDAT tool. Was just wondering why there is still a 5+ ms latency end to end jump from a desktop to a high end laptop. The mice input lag could affect the measurements. There are differences from more then 5ms. and CSGO is not the best testing game. First the FPS has a really big impact (240 fps with 19ms compared to 500fps at around 13-14ms), second the muzzle flash is quiet inconsistent and sometimes delayed. Kind regards Thomas
Jarrod do exellent videos of Laptops. If anyone consider buying a laptop I suggest look at Jarrods videos first. Even if Im not in the market for laptop now, I still come here and keep updated a bit on gaming laptops. My channel is not about laptops, and it would be nice to get some Aussie subscribers. ( Dont mean any rude or bad towards Jarrod ) And appologies for this bold post.
you cannot always making demands for dual channel memory on budget oriented gaming laptop, if every other brands with similar price not going to offer anyways otherwise manufacturer might opt for the worse case of Soldering one stick into the board to "cheat" the cost for the dual channel preload. This example already happened in a regular ideapad 3 with 4gb soldered + 4gb occupied which Instead Requires you to swap the RAM, even though it is still dual channel preload.
Doesnt this laptop also come with 3060?? I remember it was available with 5800h/3060 last gen and if it also comes with 12th gen/3060 it would really be a bargain
honstly i want this laptop mostly for the screeen because all the other gaming budget laptops just have GARBO 50+ srgb screen. . This was the most budget almost 100% srgb laptop i could find in my country xD
hey guys, would you think it's worth picking up an IdeaPad Gaming 3 with a 16 inch, 1920x1200 165hz screen, i5-12450h and GTX 3060 instead of a Legion with a 15 inch, 1920x1080 144hz screen, i5-12500h and GTX 3050ti, both with 16 gb ram? would the build quality matter in this comparison, also the cooling I heard it was improved on the newer versions of IdeaPad such as this one; also how about the screen?
Any good with same specs but a 3060 at 105W? Legions are out of stock where I live, only other viable options for the moment are HP Omen and ROG Strix G17
Hi. For use with photoshop, lightroom and some game (god of war,...), between these two laptops what is the best choice? 1) LENOVO Ideapad Pro 5i Intel i5 13500h, lppdr 16gb 5200hz, rtx 3050 6gb or 2) LENOVO Ideapad Pro 5 AMD Ryzen 5 7640hs, lppdrx 16gb 6400hz, rtx 3050 6gb ?
"By default the keyboard, touchpad, speakers, camera and ethernet worked" ;) I just have one question, is the plastic it's made of the same as the legion 5? Is the build quality the same? Looks very similar to the legion 5 2021 I have imo. (but haven't seen the ideapad in RL) So I don't understand why people say it's inferior in that regard?
Hey Jarrod, I’m looking to buy a gaming laptop under $2000 pretty soon since I’m traveling to the US. I’m torn between a Legion 5 Pro Gen 7, MSI Raider GE76 (RTX3060) or an ASUS ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition. What would you recommend? Thx 🙏🏻 if you see this, keep up the great content!
i'm not jarrod, but... the MSI with RTX 3060 is no match for the Asus which comes with RX 6800m GPU i believe, which is way stronger. the legion i would say depends on which edition you get, if its the one with RTX3070TI then i would definitely go for that.
@@EldenKingG18 Thank you!!! Doesn’t necessarily have to be Jarrod, I just need some advice since I’m struggling to choose lol. Yeah, I’ve also seen some reviews and that GE76’s model panel is pretty terrible. That plus the downgraded performance are probably a deal breaker. I’m down to G15 or Lenovo Legion 5 Pro with an RTX3070. The key differences I think are year and storage, ASUS is 2021 and comes with 512gb meanwhile the Legion is 2022 and comes with 1TB and DDR5 …
I am looking at the model with 6800h, 3050 ti and 71W battery Is this configuration with the amd cpu is good option? I really need a bigger battery to last longer in normal usage but I want a good performance in games too What do you think?
