We continue our Project TinyMiniMicro series with our Lenovo ThinkCentre M715q Tiny (Gen2) CE review. We see what this $279 node offers compared to other TMM nodes. We discuss how this offers a massive performance jump over previous-gen APUs, even as the lower-end offering in this system. We also discuss how this was one of the Ryzen CPUs that started AMD putting a lot of competitive pressure on the Intel Core line of processors.

Thank you, I've been a bit curious about this particular model so this was quite interesting. The one criticism I would put forward is how much focus was put on things that are particular to the used unit that you received. As a viewer it's not really very relevant to me that your used unit came with a dirty keyboard, but this is not only noted when discussing what is in the box (which I shrugged off), but somehow also became a key takeaway about the system (which made me write this rambling comment about how little little sense it makes to have that in a review of the system itself, rather than a review of that particular seller).

Super cool. Just bought one and can't wait to get my hands on it. Found a 256GB SSD version with 2400GE and I'll be adding a 1TB sata SSD with extra 8GB RAM.

FYI, I was able pickup one of these same models 715q Gen2 it came with the A10-9700E for under $100 and I was able to upgrade the CPU to the Ryzen 5 Pro 2400GE 4c/8th with AMD Radeon Vega 11 graphics as well as upgrade the RAM from 8 to 16GB. This is a very capable system, and it really shines when you install and run Linux instead of Windows. I prefer running an Arch Linux distro called RebornOS and the KDE Plasma desktop environment really makes the system look and feel like Windows, but performing and able to do some gaming or run Windows programs/games using Wine/Proton/Bottles/Lutris. You need to check the Lenovo SN in order to determine if you have a Gen1 or Gen2, as Gen1 715q are not upgradable to Ryzen CPUs.

It's abit of a shame that WD had decided to forego NVMe Host Memory Buffer (a.k.a use your system memory as SSD cache). Kioxia (formerly Toshiba) already had the solution which used an even smaller form factor and leverages HMB. I went checking on WD's site and had pretty muddied information about the SSD's specs, till I hit AnandTech's site and found out that aside from the lack of onboard cache, HMB was also mentioned as not implemented/supported.

I keep waiting for you to pull out the cool wall/vesa mounting bracket or maybe the external usb dvd drive with that bracket system. That is a seriously cool accessory I have gotten a bunch of times when buying refurb lenovo tiny machines. I love that bracket especially if you want to mount it on the back of monitor stands with accessory VESA mount point or just mount it on a wall (like behind a TV in a meeting room which is where I have used these sizes a bunch.) If you ever get a tiny refurb that lists the DVD accessory then chances are good you will get that bracket. You can throw out the DVD because who cares it's the bracket you want to hang on to. Usually those accessory brackets are overpriced but if you get it thrown into a refurb bundle it's a really nice bonus and they often work for multiple generations of system.

I'm currently considering picking up the m715q reviewed in this video, but the power consumption gave me pause. Do you know what the power draw on the m75q-1 and/or m75q-2? Hopefully the power brick is back to 65w which would suggest its back in line for whats typical of this form factor?

That was the interesting part. Normal interior. You are right. A few have been very ugly
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 3 года назад
That 90w power adapter does not normally come with the tiny. It is one that was meant to go with either a laptop like a mobile thinkstation or a lenovo legion laptop, or it was meant for the Tiny In One screen.which is the most likely scenario as the tiny probably came out of the tiny in one. Unfortunate for whoever might have bought that screen Edit i speak from experience because we have close to 100 of these systems with the Ryzen 5, and they only came with 65 watt power adapters.
@ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo 3 года назад
There was apparently also an IO module that also caused the config to use the 90w. BTW touch screen Tiny in One monitor arrived yesterday!
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 3 года назад
@@ServeTheHomeVideo I think the only system we got that came with a 90w PSU was the RX560 equipped M920x, cant remember though. Tiny in one is awesome. We've got quite a few (non touch) Tiny In One systems with a mix of M720Q and M75Q Waiting for a solution like this from Dell/HP/Apple, i'm not a fan of no competition
@Birdulon
@Birdulon 3 года назад
Amusingly the 3400GE in the M75q will throttle the CPU down to 1.1GHz when the GPU is maxed out with the stock 65W adapter. I switched to one of my 90W ThinkPad bricks and there's barely any throttling when stress testing the CPU and GPU together! I suspect the fan is heavily overspecced for when these systems get packed full of dust, as even with "prefer temperature" set in the BIOS, the fan never gets remotely close to full speed (as heard very briefly on startup) even when running at maximum power.
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 3 года назад
@@Birdulon I noticed that and suspected the PSU, but we already use the 90w with the tiny in one, plugged it directly into the tiny and it was still throttling, i thought it was just a lenovo thing to keep the TBP down if they used a too-small heat sink Edit, with the throttling while GPU is in use i also noticed that it got very quite, unlike when you push the CPU hard it sounded like it was at idle
@Birdulon
@Birdulon 3 года назад
@@denvera1g1 Yeah I noticed the fan seemed a lot quieter in Unigine Heaven than Cinebench, and Cinebench alone was louder than both together with the 65W adapter. Figured it was overestimating the power draw of the Vega cores.

Ever since I started using SSD I've been using mechanical hard drives as secondary for a swap file because SSDs can't be used for that. I even buy 10K rpm 240GB velociraptors if I can make it fit because the faster the better. The velociraptors are thicker than laptop drives and might not fit. I can use up 32GB of ram while working or shopping I get so many tabs open and the swapfile makes it more stable. I can completely use up and run out of ram and keep going. I would rather have the swap file over having more internal storage. If I wasn't going to power the mini on battery and solar power I would probably add a mechanical drive, I got to save every milliamp I can to keep making money so I'm not adding any extra drives.

I've used these for a number of clients, they really seem to like them. I think it's important to note, however, that these are using mobile processors, and the price new is very close to their small form factor desktops which actually use beefy desktop processors and blow these out of the water. If you really need/want the small size these make sense, and many clients seem to really like that. Another point to be aware of - if buying these used or refurbished, I have seen the products come with third-party peripherals, even up to and including the WiFi which is sometimes provided as simply a cheap nano USB antenna instead of an internal Intel card.
@returnofmerenguespersempre6664
Can you upgrade CPUs on this one?
@ServeTheHomeVideo
@ServeTheHomeVideo Год назад
Usually you would not upgrade these since it is cheaper to sell and buy one with the CPU you want. Also, in many of these, AMD uses PSB lock on its CPUs (we have a video on this.) Still some people do. Check the forums if you are thinking about it.

Yes, it can but only to the 2400GE. I have a Lenovo 715q 2nd Gen that came with an AMD A10-9700E. I was able to upgrade to the AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 2400GE, but I had to update the BIOS to a more current version in order to support the upgrade, in my case M1XKT58A. You need to check the specific Lenovo SN to see if your 715q is Gen 2, as these are the ones that can take the Ryzen CPU upgrade.
