The moment you opened up the device, my typical complaints regarding the E/Edge series just came out of my mouth and fingers once more: No Magnesium reinforcements. There's so much you can do with Aluminium on the lid and MIL-810G tests until that hinge breaks the plastic (since it's the same design as the 500-series IdeaPads). Especially if hot exhaust air goes through the hinge as on the IdeaPad 500, which means plastics will dry out and become brittle quicker over time. This is why I'd still prefer an L-Series ThinkPad. Another thing to point out: the power plug (USB-C) is soldered to the board instead of modular, kind of the same mistake as the T480, though at least, with no TB controller present, should be more reliable. Now, I know I've been moaning to death about the E-Series (heck, I'm sure Laptop Retrospective will one day block me from commenting for this reason lol), but that is not to say that the E-Series is awful, bad, or that it should be avoided: it's superior to the Vostros and basic ProBooks. It's that one should temper their expectations before expecting extreme durability out of a ThinkPad if they go for the E-Series, because the rest is great value. If anything, I'm moaning the fact that I'll get more work and earn more money servicing hinges, when in fact it's something I should expect OEMs to evolve from because it's getting bothersome already.

LOL, certainly not going to block you Juan, I love your comments. The E series makes some consessions as we'd expect for a machine is a certain price bracket. It's always interesting to compare a ThinkPad vs a ThinkPad and a ThinkPad vs another laptop.

I was gifted one of these from work from an X280 (which I really liked) because it was just too physically small to see. These machines are my work from home devices, so I setup a monitor arm and bracket to hold them, and although I needed the larger screen I just hate the feel of the outside ‘plastics’ because they slide around so much and the power button just seems its not quite as good (previous user probably mashed too much). The positives from it is that I can see it better and stopped stooping forward (wish it was higher res 1366x768) and I definitely ended up with a processor upgrade. If I’d have had the choice or I was spending my own money I’d have gone with a T460-T480, I did prod my ICT department but they just don’t have them. Looking forward for when they roll out the new ones with the next buying cycle in a few years!

You can simply not purchase one, or build your own, there are several options. I actually have this one, but I upgraded the entire system, works fantastic for my penetration testing so, to each his own. I suggest if you have any knowledge or education in Computer engineering like I do, strap it down and rebuild it, helps increase your knowledge and if anything goes south you are aware of the exo.

I have the e585. It’s the Ryzen variant with a Ryzen 5 2500u with Vega 8 graphics. The e585 is a solid daily driver. I upgraded my machine to 16 gigs RAM and a 1tb Samsung 860 Evo. I am going to get a 2280 NvME drive and dual boot. The e585 is a great office and Netflix machine.

My main computer is a top spec Lenovo ThinkPad E580 Silver. Internal specs: Intel i7 CPU & AMD RX550 GPU, 12gb DDR4 RAM, backlit keyboard, full HD mat display, M.2 SSD and SSHD, fingerprint sensor, USB-C Charging with display output. It was easy to upgrade it too 👍 Excellent laptop!

How does the performance go on that? Any thermal throttling?
@LaptopRetrospective

In the world of laptops, everything eventually will thermal throttle if you push it hard enough. Outside of theoretical testing, it depends on how you use your laptops if it will or not.

I got to fix a E490 from a customer the other day that have shorted motherboard, well the board tell me is also can be put on the E485 and E580, and I quite surprised to see backlit keyboard and FHD IPS display in this unit. Despite the weight (compared to T490/480), E480/90/580 is actually pack a punch, except you want to use Thunderbolt 3 or battery bridge.

@@LaptopRetrospective Fair? It's a incredible deal! Even when it's new. Sadly in my country is quite rare to see used E480/90/580, since it's targeting individual owner rather than SMB (at least in their marketing material in my country), but when it's listed for sell, it's always priced just below an used X270 (with, of course, 8th gen i5, 512GB NVMe SSD, and 8GB of single channel RAM), just a fantastic deal.

i've just accidentally ordered an E580 on ebay... i thought it was a T580. I hope it won't disappoint me too much. By the way, i still think it should be better than the other laptop i was considering, a Probook G6.

@@LaptopRetrospective it arrived. What i don't like is the fan, which starts often even without doing anything (any solution about this?). Speed for browsing is "so-so", i'm not completely sastisfied about it (i5 8250u, windows 11). The keyboard is quite good, not as good as my old Packard Bell Easynote but much better than the entry level laptops i tried in the stores (i.e. Lenovo V15). I hope this is the same keyboard of the T-series, not a lower quality one. Battery life is good, 4-5 hours at 80%. I love the flow generated by gestures, trackpad and trackpoint. I also like the case very much.
@LaptopRetrospective

Give it time to do all the updates and run Lenovo System Update to ensure drivers and firmware are good. Windows often does updates in the background that cause CPU usage and fan spin with it.

I'd buy the T480 over an E480 regardless of battery configuration if the price was similar. Again, what makes these batteries hard to find is what stores you can access in your country.

Really basic and only supports two drives but at least the battery isn't glued in. The cooling looks to be a bit on the weak side and I see that there is pads for a gpu so got to wonder if these got hot during gaming or 3D work. As for the current meta regarding speaker placement I find that really annoying which limits the sound quality when not on a desk or a table.
