It's wonderful to have a real reviewer and not just a gamer/spec-sheet reader! I didn't know the 4K touchscreen on the P1 is matte versus glossy on the X1 Extreme: matte's what I want. I'm also glad you noted the lack of visible texture on the P1's screen: I've read complaints that the touch surface on the X1 Extreme is visible. Thank you, Lisa!
@@circuitdotlt You can swap FN key with CTRL in BIOS or lenovo thinkvantage software (but I'm agree, it's dumb). I personaly like the fact that there's no numpad for aestethics and most the time I work with external monitor and external keyboard anyway. Also, lenovo has something for "numpad lovers", T5xx series and P53 (or something). This P1 is like more "pro" version of X1 extreme which is direct competitor for MacBook Pro (same thing with Dell's XPS "precision" and HP Zbook "Studio"). I'd like to see thicker powerfull 14 inch workstation for myslef, maybe Ryzen M4800u bring something like that in the future.
@@pd5156 yes you can swap Fn/Ctrl (but then you end up with incorrect markings on the keys). Numpad function, however, is a different issue with all lenovos. By numpad I mean the second function of JKLUIO keys. Most HPs and DELLs have them. No idea why lenovo does not include this, when there is zero extra cost. Or do they have to pay royalties to someone for including the feature??
I've been shopping for a new laptop for a couple of days. My eyes are burning from going through uninformative--downright ignorant, in many cases--videos and blog posts. I just stumbled upon your videos and they are a breath of fresh air. Thank you!
I still have my 2015 Lenovo i5 Thinkpad T450s & use it every single day for hours on end. Havent had any issues with it & ive actually dropped it from hip height 2 times which is crazy but it just got scratched nothing broke. I also play many games like League of Legends, DOTA, Oxygen Not Included, Rimworld, Stardew Valley, CS GO, WoW etc & it runs great. Definitely getting another Thinkpad after this one! I think 5 years is enough & I got my money's worth :)
Thinkpads are legendary for their keyboards, but the P1 and X1 extreme gen 2 have a keyboard defect that cannot be understated. After trying 3 different devices, I gave up trying to use it. You have to press directly in the center of the key to register a press, and even then, it misses a substantial number of key strokes. Lenovo forums are full of reports and failed attempts to fix it.
Hello Lisa. I’ve been following your channel for some time - love your reviews they are always technically solid with relevant information. Cheers from Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺
Thanks for the great reviews, Lisa! In the review of the 4k OLED MATTE screen (which sounds awesome!) In this video I'm seeing some crosshatch X shaped diagonal noise come and go in almost every photo that loads- does that happen in person, or is that camera/youtube compression playing tricks on me? I see some mention of this issue on the lenovo forums, but this screen does seem to have all the features i'd want! Thanks!
Matte, 180 degree hinge and OLED touch screen! Making me jealous, looking forward to this hitting the used markets in the coming years. Can't justify upgrading my XPS 7590 OLED yet!
@@RaphaelPeirone I've been marveling at the anti reflective coating on the Dell and how much of a game changer it is over any other OLED screen I've had. But Matte would be even better!
I bought a X1 Extreme and + the thermal throttling is pretty horrific compared to other notebooks + the keyboard has typing issues (big thread on Lenovo forums, no solution on Lenovos side... + the fans spin up pretty loud + My oled screen is REALLY unevenly lit especially showing grey content and on lower brightness levels. + the Batterylife with my OLED is 4 Hours MAX.... Not sure how 7h are even possible there with a xeon processor and Quadro Graphics. The battery capacity was never designed for a 4K OLED screen as its the same as GEN 1 had without an OLED option. + on 1:05 i can see the screen being very glossy. So only the inner layer isnt shiny? For me this product is bad. They put the next gen Intel CPUs in a thermal design of the older generation. This and they didnt even fix the bios issues the device has with that Im not really happy even if i try cause other factors are really nice on this machine... Guess it never left the prototyping space and got pushed out with no thoughts spend....
While Lenovo did fuck up here, why did you think such a thin form factor laptop could cool those specs? It's their fault for selling it, but it's also your fault for buying it. Stupidity all around.
Intel XTU is your friend, undervolt it to avoid thermal and power throtling. (I get 60fps in witcher 3 on mid-high settings and max 70C) Typing issues will be solved by disabling that hybrid sleep or fast sleep win feature. Fans could be controlled from Vantage app. Xeon itself will get you much worse battery life, but not as much as that 4k display, so 4h with that spec is not that bad...
"+ the Batterylife with my OLED is 4 Hours MAX.... Not sure how 7h are even possible there with a xeon processor and Quadro Graphics. The battery capacity was never designed for a 4K OLED screen as its the same as GEN 1 had without an OLED option." ..... isnt the biggest allowance 100W for airplanes? There is not so much room for more battery..... post like yours exist for any laptop atm it seems
This is the gen 1 I think, a lot of the issue with gen 1 have been solved in gen 2. My fans are rarely loud, only when they should. Thermal throttling is a problem with all laptops of this size, I haven't seen one reviewed that does much better and that includes Macbooks
I actually own a P1 Gen 2 with an i9, 32gb ram, t2000 graphics, and q 1tb ssd and I absolutely love it! Perfect for graphic designers, developers, etc. It also can be good at running some games as well. I definitely recommend buying one!
Got this as work laptop and it's been pretty nice so far. One thing to note if you want to upgrade the M.2 SSD yourself: you need to get a single sided m.2 drive with no chips and just flat PCB on the other side since only signle sided drives fit the slot. I've seen people jam a double sided one in but it will bend the drive and maybe not be good in extended use. The info is buried on the Lenovo website in one spec sheet PDF and not found very easily, had to ask from EU Facebook support page for this since the normal chat on the Lenovo site didn't know anything about their products... :)
I already know what laptop I want, but this woman is just entertaining. I don’t know what she saying I just need to know what computers can handle sims.

I have a 1st gen X1 Extreme with the i5-8300H. This CPU thermal throttled like crazy. It went up to 4GHz and right back down to around 2 after a few seconds. If the new generation does this, it's worth to check out ThrottleStop and undervolt the CPU a little. After a 150mV undervolt my machine can sustain 4GHz for an extended period of time. It's a rather safe procedure, the worst thing that can happen is that the laptop freezes if you undervolt too much and will reset.
Hi Lisa, thanks for the review. I've just bought this machine, and with the touch screen I really feel the need of a pen! The official website suggest to buy the pro pen but on your review you are actually using another model...is it the 4x80h34887 version, or other? Many thanks and congrants for the channel!
I bought one when they still had the anniversary promo going for $1,636.08. Got the i9 with 16gb ram, 512 SSD. I wanted long battery life so I chose the 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) display. I got it mainly for programming, a little bit of an overkill, but boy this machine is blazing fast. It feels durable, ruggedized and light at the same time. One of the few problems I have is the fun noise, it kicks in once in a while when you are not even charging it and running light applications, and it comes on regularly when charging. Another problem is the back lit keyboard, the lights bleeds through the gaps around the keys and can be very uncomfortable to use when the light is on; I do touch typing so I can do without the light. The last one is the heat. If you normally put your laptop on your lab then the head can be a problem, especially when charging. If you are buying one, I will advice you install the browser extension honey, it will get you all the coupons that apply, and Lenovo have quite a lot of them. All in all, I love it because of how fast and steady it is.
@@lloydgoodman1636 I got this one: 15.6" FHD (1920 x 1080) IPS, 500 nits, anti-glare with Dolby Vision™ HDR 400. The brightness is beyond expectation and the colors are rich. Like I said, I wanted my battery to last so I didn't want to the OLED one.
I would've seriously considered this laptop if it had LTE capabilities. The look of it sucks imo, but the device is a good one, so being able to use it anywhere would've been amazing.
I feel like something from the thinkpad lineup is my only option in 2020. Ports, quality keyboard, a screen that doesn’t double as a mirror/smudge magnet, and a non touch option are all huge factors for me. I feel like laptops are moving more towards media devices than something to work on and that erks me. Me: Thinkpad x1 carbon 7th gen bootcamp instructor by night web dev by day
isn't it sort of ironic that the last generation 4k touch display was a substantially wuder color gamut (lower number are better) than the oled of this model, check it out, your own review Lisa
Is it a *true* 4K OLED matte display? Lenovo’s own website doesn’t list “anti-glare” as a spec for the 4K OLED panel for both the X1 and P1. One one forum I saw an owner posted that it is a glossy display that is almost matte. Is the X1 the same? I was about to get an X1 4K but if the panel is different on the P1 and is more matte, then my decision has been made.
Burn-in may still be an factor with OLED displays - no manufacturer including Lenovo is saying how they’ve solved this issue. So I would stick with an IPS display if longevity is important to you and you don’t need the features that come with an OLED one.
I wouldn’t recommend getting the i9 in most “thin and light” laptops. The cooling just isn’t there in many laptops so the performance gain wouldn’t be worth the cost of the i9. And the longevity of the i9 when it’s running hot all the time would be questionable.
can hardly believe … i've actually watched one of *lisa* 's reviews from start to finish! first ever computer i had was *ibm-aptiva* _(win-95)_ … think i need to get me one of these *lenovo* 's. better wait a few more years … graphene batteries should be hitting the market 2 - 2½ years from now … surely *lonovo* will be one of the first to debut. just replaced my *toshiba* internal keyboard … it should last another 3+ years. thanks for your knowledge, *lisa* … kudos!
Just noticed at 3:20 that there seem to be about 7 dead pixels on the screen! I hope it's debris, not pixels, although the bottom right one is persistent during the whole discussion on the OLED screen. Btw Lisa, still waiting for a reply about the OLED matte option; would really appreciate it, thanks!
I have this one from the Lenovo xmas sale. 4k version. It would been better if I went with the 1080 version. 4k screen is too power hungry. But happy with it. Already expanded with a second 1T ssd'. I do heavy programming.
Love your videos. So much good information. I was hoping to get your advice. I’m looking for a laptop that I’ll use exclusively for day trading stocks. While at home I plan to hook 3 external monitors to it. Would you recommend the p1 or x1 extreme. I’m generally a Mac person so all of this is kind of over my head :-/ thanks in advance
Hi great review. Do you recommend it for some graphic design? Iknow you cant fold it like a tablet. If i want to use the pen for some tshirt sketch designs, it will be accurate enough for some quality designs? Thank you for the great review.
Hi Lisa, thanks for this review; are you sure this is a matte oled touch? There is no such option on the Lenovo site for p1. Recently ordered mine with a 4k ips matte non-touch which takes ages to be delivered due to the coronavirus situation. I would really appreciate your reply if an oled matte exists so that I could change my order. Thanks
hi there, please clarify something for me, did you build a custom laptop, or you ordered an available product, because I Am about to order mine which should be delivered in 5 days according to Lenovo. Thanks a lot
Thank you so much for this review. You do a great job of sticking to the point and no fluff. Two questions. One relevant, the other not so much. Would you know if the two thunderbolt 3 ports are each four-lane? I'd like to get this laptop but I need one that can drive two 5k displays. Also, that's a pretty nice mic you have. Can you share what brand and model it is?
Love how upgradable this is, still sad that neither intel, nor AMD sell socketed laptop CPUs anymore, this would have been the perfect candidate for one of those: buy with an i5 now, upgrade to i7 or i9 later.
@@kevinyu3863 yeah, all laptop CPUs are soldered now, haswell was the very last generation to have socketed models. Some Chinese manufacturers are making desktop socket equipped laptops, but they're a niche and very thick and heavy.
Hi Lisa... will you do an XPS 13 2020 review soon? Would mainly like to know if the bottom firing speakers on the 2020 sound as clear in the high frequencies compared to previous generations which had the speakers on the sides and where pretty good imo. Normally bottom firing speakers are not good for clarity. Would be nice to get a reply. Thanks.
The $4500 model is on sale for $2200 with 3 year warranty.... kinda wanna pull the trigger on this for my next 4 years in architecture left but hesitant only because there might be something better out there. Any advice y’all?
Hi Lisa, would you recommend the P1 gen 2 or a X1 yoga Gen 5 for a person who does a little CAD work on the go (remote desktop does the heavy lifting in today's climate), bluebeam, and Adode creative suite work. I currently have a P40 which I love, but I'm looking at stepping up to one of the new offerings. Stay safe.
I love Lenovo. Got two at work and one at home. They bust it up. Why is the CRTL key always in the wrong place ? FN and CTRL are odd. Bugged my manager about and he wondered the same. Stupid ergonomics gaff there, but otherwise for business, this Thinkpad and X1 rock my vote. Those Chinese home boys made some good ones. The Lenovo is a natural response to IT desk and Dell too. I would love an X1 or XPS. But my mid grade "Chevy" Lenovos is tough enough and able enough for my day to day. My one at home screams SSD. Don't know how I manage that one. Maybe Linux in its future too. Nice review Lisa on this Xeon workhorse. Lenovo fans saddle up!
Is the only benefit of a Xeon CPU in a laptop the use of ECC memory? If only another makes would have ECC support on all CPUs, not only the top tier... hmm
simple question, if something happen with the keyboard, do we really need to replace the whole palmrest, or at least remove the whole palmrest which is pretty much have to completely dissasembly the unit only to replace the keyboard? Whats on your mind Lenovo????
