@@jawshhwa5099 It was not in this video, I didn't think about that. I will in the future though! However, if you plan to open up the laptop like I did in this video, I don't see why you can't just unplug it from the board before you perform maintenance. I have had no issues doing it this way. If you are doing some kind of troubleshooting where you need to disable the internal battery without opening the case, then the BIOS solution works. I could be missing something though, if you have anything to add.
At 5:27 I see the SSD is brand Transend. Amzn, in 2023, regularly has big discounts on that model T430s "with DRAM cache". Silicon Motion Inc with LV-DDR3 is rare on a 42mm "half-stick" that's SATA connected. T420 was ordinary non-cache 2262XT controller like all the "brand-you've-never-heard-of" alternatives.
After further research, yes I found the same results. It doesn't run too bad, but just installing a 2.5" SATA III SSD provides better overall performance, I found.
good on you that the black-wrap coin time battery has been swapped for a fresh yellow-wrap cell. 2022 is the year I see almost all those 10yo factory cells were exhausted. (and the EUFI boot mode reverts to Legacy.."No bootable devices" halt)
I bought this used T440 3 years ago and it's still working great. Mine is still using a mechanical HDD (500gb) running Windows 11 dual-boot with Chrome OS through brunch framework - I hate automatic Windows updates as it causes the mechanical drive to go up to 100% disk usage and it heats up a bit. With Chrome OS, it boots up and shuts down really quickly without the pesky updates 🤣
Awesome. I've gone away from using hard drives for boot drives, but do acknowledge that they aren't that bad, depending on your situation. Interesting combination of Windows 11 and Chrome OS.
@@dontdlay Do you have the 1366x768 display? You can upgrade to a 1920x1080 display and that will be pretty nice. Unless you find a good used deal, most new screens are around $110 - $120 CAD after taxes and shipping. If you live in Canada, you can find them on Amazon or eBay. If you live in eastern US Bliss computers has a good supply and they will show up in a Google search. I have had a bad experience with them, though (ask me if you want details). Send me some links if you want a second opinion, or I can send you a couple if needed. Have it's fairly easy to replace the screen and you will want to access it to double check the pin connection on the rear of the panel before ordering.
@@dontdlay Awesome, good luck with the install, feel free to reach out if you need any direction. I am waiting on a 1920x1080 display for a ThinkPad T530 currently :)
It does not happen automatically, if that is what you are saying. I am not sure what you are implying. With thinkpads I have worked on you can either disable the internal battery in BIOS or unplug it for service.
Unfortunately the T460 does not support a m.2 SSD. You can get nvme ssd to SATA caddie adapters, though, to fit in the 2.5" drive bay. I had heard this before and I just tried it myself as I have a few T460 laptops at the moment.
hey i have this same laptop but in my laptop bluetooth is disabled and bios is protected with hardware manager and supervisor password can u plzz tell me how to reset bio so i can turn on bluetooth
If you take off the back panel just as I did in the video, you will see the CMOS battery at the top left. It will be connected to the board by cable. You can try unplugging it, leaving it for a couple of minutes, and then plugging it back in. This might reset the BIOS settings back to default. Otherwise there is a quite complicated process that involves removing a security chip from the motherboard, running it through an external device, and then soldering it back on the board. Keep in touch if you need more help and I can assist with some research. I did run into this problem once, but I can't seem to remember what my solution was.
Amigo compre un t440 thinkpad, ya le puse una ram de 8gb, tambien puedo instalar un ssd M2 junto con el disco duro mecanico?, si es asi que referencia de M2 puedo usar?
@@HaisteComputerRepair Hi, in the M.2 2230 SSD port, you install a 128 GB Transcend SSD, this one is NVME Gen 3 SSD, my question is related if you test with an Gen 4 NVME M.2 2230 SSD port, not the 2,5" Sata port. Thanks!
@@Pitatito The SSD I used is not an NVMe SSD it is SATA III m.2. They look similar, but the format is older and runs at similar speeds to a 2.5" SATA SSD. I'm not sure that I said NVMe in the video, but if I did that would be in error. Either way, no I did not test a gen 4 NVMe. Look at this quick guide: www.kingston.com/en/blog/pc-performance/two-types-m2-vs-ssd
Hi! I have a T440 (not "p" or "s", just T440). I've installed an SSD in the main drive slot (replacing the original HDD). Should I install an M.2. SSD and boot from there? It's really worth it? I mean, in comparisson with my current SSD drive. I'm on Linux. The 8GB of RAM are always full and swapping everytime. I checked T440 specs and it says that the M.2. port in this model is only meant for cache, so I thought I could just buy a small SSD there and use it as a swap. Would this be a good configuration? Thanks
You can use it as a boot drive for an operating system. I have done this a few times. Just make sure you look for a 2242 m.2 SATA III SSD. The one I used in the video is not too bad.
hello, thank you for the video, this help a lot people out there. I have an Thinkpad t440 too, and mine came with an ssd m.2 sata 16gb, now I need change this for one ssd bigger, but I don't find in manual what is the maximum capacity of the m.2 card slot. in some places I se is 128gb but see videos where people put ssd 512gb in this model. if you know this information and can put here I will be really grateful. sorry for the English, im from Brazil and don't speak too much English
It's all good. You can install any capacity m.2 SSD. Go for 1TB if you like. Just make sure you purchase the same type of m.2 SSD that you have installed currently. Any brand. You might just be reading about SSD options that shipped with the t440 from Lenovo.
Hello there, I just bought M.2 SSD 2242 from a local brand, Kaizen to be added to my Thinkpad T440s. The thing is, when I plug the ssd, the laptop wont turn on, but the second I unplug the ssd, it turn on like nothing just happened. Any ideas why this is happening? Does this laptop only support some kind of ssd? If yes, could you tell me what I need to look into the ssd for my laptop to be able to used.
So the laptop will not turn on at all? As if it were dead? Or do you mean it will not boot. Are you by any chance able to access BIOS with it installed? If not, take it out, boot to BIOS, go to Security Tab, Go to I/O Port Access, and make sure the WWAN options is Enabled. Then try the install and get back to me.
@@HaisteComputerRepair Found the problem fam. See, what I bought is NVMe M.2 instead of SATA M.2, that's why my laptop won't turn on, cuz I was plugged it in, it was upside down. Really upset cuz I didn't know there's a difference between M.2 SATA and M.2 NVMe.
T440 model? Look right beside the WiFi card. If there are two cards beside each other, there is a chance there is a WWAN card installed, in which case you can just take it out and install the m.2 if you wish to do so. Let me know what you find and look up and model numbers you can to make sure you know what you are looking at or planning to take out.
I been having problem when I boot and it says 2100: Detection error on HDD0 (Main HDD), I have been trying to fix these problem by removing the HDD and Putting it back but the problem still pop up when I boot up
@@HaisteComputerRepair yes, it work perfectly fine before this problem and I would already buy another drive if i have money but I can’t work so idk what to do..
@@Koncore8 Ok, if disconnecting and reconnecting is not working it could be a failing hard drive. Are you able to boot into BIOS? Or Boot Menu options?
Hi, I am looking to get a M.2 SSD. Was looking at your model but when I compare the slot where the SSD goes, it only has one of those cut-outs between the connection pins and yours has two cut-outs. Would the SSD shown by you be ok for by T440 even though the cut-outs are different? Thank you!
@@andreim936 The WWAN slot doubles as a place for the m.2 SSD. Look for m.2 SATA III SSD, not NVME. I can send a couple links to an amazon page. I just recently tried out a DogFish m.2 SSD in my ThinkPad T540p, which is a cheaper lesser known brand. The Transcend units I used in this video are pretty good.
@@HaisteComputerRepair I just installed this Trancend M.2 on a L460, it didnt get detected in the bios or windows. I then tried it in a L440 and still was not detected. I guess i got a defective one. Im going to return it and try another one.
ThinkPad T440 Amazon: Transcend 256GB, M.2 2242 SSD, SATA3 B+M Key, TLC (TS256GMTS430S) or Transcend 240GB, M.2 2242 SSD, SATA3, TLC (TS240GMTS420S) same price.. which one to pick? (first one has (B+M key) thanks very helpful information
Interesting, I suppose the B+M key would be a slight improvement, but I wouldn't know from experience as I have only used the B+M key version. So, I suppose I would recommend that one being that it worked well with me.
It is used for both an m.2 SATA III SSD or a WWAN card, which is the modem you speak of. Look for a 2242 (42MM) m.2 SSD. I just recently tried out a cheap brand called DogFish and have been using it in my T540p.
@@MichaelG25 The T440 has 4GB of integrated RAM on the motherboard and the one DIMM slot for expansion. So, whatever RAM stick you choose to install, add 4GB and that is your total. Go for 1600MHz.
@@MichaelG25 You're using a T440? I don't think there is a model that shipped without 4GB integrated memory. You'll see the little black rectangles by the DIMM slot, just like what you see on a memory stick. Either way, happy to help! Let me know if you do upgrade.
I bought a t440 on Ebay for $150 and it came with the specs below. Is it possible to upgrade the m.2 and remove the HDD? Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz 2.69 GHz 12.0 GB (11.7 GB usable) Installed RAM 16GB m.2 SanDisk SSD 750GB HDD
Yes it is. Just remember that you will have to reinstall Windows or whatever operating system you have. Follow the steps in the video and replace the m.2 and hdd. Let me know if you need help with this. Remember to get an m.2 like this one linked, not an nvme drive: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07KG2G152/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@keiserious I think you can install Win 11 now without having the requirements they laid out on it's official release. I just saw an eBay seller with a ThinkPad T530 with Windows 11 installed.
@@keiserious Ok, sounds good let me know how it goes. I hear that a fresh install is the way to go. As far as retaining the Win 10 product key, it might be good to do that in the event it is not automatically activated from your system. This should have shipped with Win 8 integrated, therefore you may not be prompted for a product key. I cannot verify this, though, as I have not tried Win 11 with a T440. Let me know if you need help retrieving your key.
According to this, the T440 didn't ship with integrated NVIDIA GPU, just Intel HD Graphics. The T440p did, though. www.lenovo.com/ca/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t440/ Either way, there is no way to upgrade the integrated GPU as it is soldered on to the motherboard .
I got it from Amazon for a good price. It's a brand called Transcend that I've never tried before, but the speeds hold up and performance overall is good: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07KG2G152/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 I've ordered four so far. It's the best value I can find right now (shopping from Canada).
Unfortunately there is only 4GB RAM soldered to the board, so the most common upgrade I have done is 12GB RAM with an additional 8GB stick. I haven't tried a 16GB DDR3 though they do exist (often at a price where it's really not worth it).
@@rawatrakesh8088 I will likely receive them in three days as it is a long weekend. I'm seeing conflicting messages from Lenovo itself and the community. So, I'll just have to try it myself.
Lol.. what is the purpose of this m.2 ssd that we can't Install window and store data in it if this is only used for cache. 1TB m.2 ssd only for cache Lol what a garbage.
